Characteristics of photocatalytic CO removal process conducting CO conversion by using Pt loaded $TiO_2$ photocatalyst were investigated in a photocatalytic tubular reactor. Effects of Pt loading method onto $TiO_2$, linear velocity of gas stream containing CO gas, CO concentration and moisture content in the gas stream on the conversion of CO to $CO_2$ were examined. It was found that the CO gas could be removed almost 100% by using photocatalytic tubular reactor internally coated with Pt/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst under UV irradiation, when the linear velocity of gas stream was in the range of 0.01~0.25 m/s and CO concentration in the gas stream was ranged from 20 to 100 ppm and the relative humidity of the gas stream was in the range of 20~40%. The conversion of CO gas decreased gradually with increasing linear velocity of gas stream and CO concentration in the gas stream. The moisture in the gas stream could promote the removal of CO gas by means of the generation of OHradicals.
This study investigated design factors and removal efficiencies of a sheet flow channel as natural type water improvement techniques in the stream. The channel was designed considering the design factors, then constructed and monitored in the test bed of the Osan stream's floodplain. Water lever, velocity, discharge, T-P, T-N, and NO3-N were monitored and the removal efficiencies and design formula were suggested. Overall efficiencies of T-P, T-N, and NO3-N range 10 - 20%, and they show consistent relations with residence times. Minimum velocity requirement is also suggested from the relation of algae conditions and velocities. Relation formula of residence time and removal efficiency will be applicable in the design and operation process of a sheet flow channel.

An impervious cover in the watershed management has been used as effective indicators. It is a very useful barometer to measure the impacts of watershed development on aquatic systems. Hence, it is necessary to survey the impervious cover of a watershed and to develop an impervious cover model (ICM) for supporting best management practices. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the spatial patterns of the impervious cover, to calculate landscape indices using FRAGSTATS, and to develop an ICM in the Gap-stream watershed and its six sub-watersheds. The results showed that the impervious cover of the Gap-stream watershed increased from 4.9 % in 1975 to more than 11.2 % in 2000, the number of impervious cover fragments increased from 662 to 3,578, and the landscape shape index increased from 27.0796 to 91.1982. Fragmentation was severe within the Yudeungcheon downstream and the Gapcheon downstream of six sub-watersheds. This paper presented the results derived landscape indices to define landscape patterns and structure for the Gap-stream watershed. Our results indicate that altered land use might be influenced changes in landscape structure.
This study reviewed the applicability of the existing flood discharge calculation method on Jeju Island Han Stream and compared this method with observation results by improving the mediating variables for the Han Stream. The results were as follows. First, when the rain-discharge status of the Han Stream was analyzed using the flood discharge calculation method of the existing design (2012), the result was smaller than the observed flood discharge and the flood hydrograph differed. The result of the flood discharge calculation corrected for the curve number based on the terrain gradient showed an improvement of 1.47 - 6.47% from the existing flood discharge, and flood discharge was improved by 4.39 - 16.67% after applying the new reached time. In addition, the sub-basin was set separately to calculate the flood discharge, which yielded an improvement of 9.92 - 32.96% from the existing method. In particular, the steepness and rainfall-discharge characteristics of Han Stream were considered in the reaching time, and the sub-basin was separated to calculate the flood discharge, which resulted in an error rate of -8.77 to 8.71%, showing a large improvement of 7.31 - 28.79% from the existing method. The flood hydrograph also showed a similar tendency.

The purposes of this study were to suggest the methodology to select prior areas in the environmental pollution survey for livestock excreta (EPSLE) as well as to elucidate the validity of the methodology. In this study, the prior areas in the EPSLE were determined by examining the number of compost facilities categorized according to the three levels of size including the basin, the sub-basin and the watershed, respectively, based on the data from "Annual Nation-wide Pollution Sources Survey (2012)". The results suggested that the list of prior basins were Nakdong, Geum, Youngsan and Han river basins in order. Also, it was examined that the prior sub-basins in the four river basins including Nakdong, Geum, Youngsan and Han rivers were Naesung Stream, Geumgang Gongju, Juam Dam and Namhan Downstream, respectively. The prior watersheds in the sub-basins of Naesung stream, Geumgang Gongju, Juam Dam and Namhan Downstream were Seocheon Downstream, Geum Stream, Gyeombaek Suwipyo and Yanghwa Stream, respectively. The validity of the methodology used in this study was elucidated by analyzing the correlation of the number of compost facilities with the concentrations of T-N and T-P observed in the end-points of sub-basins. The results of correlation analysis showed that the concentrations of T-N and T-P increased with the number of compost facilities. Specifically, there was the stronger correlation between the number of compost facilities and the concentrations of T-N than that for T-P. Consequently, it was proved that the methodology used in this work was valid and rational for the selection of prior areas in environmental pollution survey for EPSLE.
Such stream characteristics as the numbers, lengths, orders of stream channels, and drainage density are the essential elements for the analysis of drainages in planning of watershed management in a drainage basin. The drainage net is the pattern of tributaries and master streams in a drainage basin as declineated on a planimetric map. Stream order is a measure of the position of a stream in the hierarchy of tributaries. Density of the drainage is given by the quotient of the cumulative length of stream and the total drainage area. Drainage density then is simply a length per unit of area. In this study, the Anyang-cheon upper-watershed is selected for the survey and analysis of the stream system and drainage density in view point of the useful collection of data for effective watershed management planning. The Anyang-cheon upper-watershed is consisted of about 12,600 hectars of drainage area including the 13 Sub-stream. Total length of the Stream (as described in the Stream Law) in the survey area is measured as much as 71.2km, and that of the Small-stream as descrived in the Saemaul Stream Survey Book (1972) is calculated as 43,010 meters. Besides of this lengths, measured about 43,410 meters of the Small-stream and about 71,900 meters of the Torrential valley through this study. The range of the drainage density among the 13 Sub-streams having sub-watershed is analysed as from 14.79 to 24.10, and average value of drainage density in the entire watershed is calculated as 18.21 in case of including the length of the Torrential valley and 12.50 in case of excluding the same. It is required that the standard classification system in classifing for the characteristics of identification among the Stream, Sub-stream, Small-stream, Torrent, and Torrential valley must be satisfied through joint study of the authorities concerned.

In the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene, CO2 could play a role as an oxidant to increase conversion of ethylbenzene and stability as well over TiO2-ZrO2 mixed oxide catalysts. TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and were characterized by BET surface area, bulk density, X-ray diffraction, temperature programmed desorption of NH3 and CO2. These catalysts were found to be X-ray amorphous with enhanced surface areas and acid-base properties both in number and strength when compared to the respective oxides (TiO2 and CO2). These catalysts were found to be highly active (> 50% conversion), selective (> 98%) and catalytically stable (10 h of time-on-stream) at 600 oC for the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene. However, in the nitrogen stream, both activity and stability were rather lower than those in the stream with CO2. The TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts were catalytically superior to the simple oxide catalysts such as TiO2 and ZrO2. The synergistic effect of CO2 has clearly been observed in directing the product selectivity and prolonging catalytic activity.

The HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran) model was applied to the Kyoungan stream watershed to analyze effects of watershed management plans on receiving water qualities. Utilizing BASINS 3.1 GIS program, the Kyoungan stream watershed was divided into 57 sub-basins and model input parameters were obtained, from DEM (Digital Elevation Model), land use type, stream map, and wastewater treatment facilities, etc.. The hydrologic module of the model was validated based on the measured meteorological data and stream flow data. Then the model was calibrated and verified against the field measurements of water qualities, including temperature, DO, BOD, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, Org-N, TN and TP. In most cases, there were reasonable agreements between measurements and predictions. The validated model was used to analyze the water quality improvements in the main stream of Kyoungan stream according to the watershed management plans in sub-basins, which are three different scenarios: water quality improvement in tributaries through watershed management activities, expansion and up-grade of wastewater treatment plants, and application of first and second scenarios together. It was concluded that expansion and upgrade of wastewater treatment plants would be more effective than watershed management activities. In order to improve water qualities to the satisfactory level, both watershed management and point source control must be required in the Kyoungan stream.
It has been reported that about 47% of groundwater wells within 10 km from the coastline in the western/southern coastal areas of Korea were affected by seawater. It has been interpreted that the cause of groundwater salinization is seawater intrusion. The Gilsan stream in the Seocheon area was a tidal stream until the Geumgang estuary dam was constructed and operated. Therefore, it is likely that the Gilsan stream catchment was deposited with sediments containing high-saline formation water prior to the use of landfill farmland at this catchment area. The groundwater in this study area showed EC values ranging from 111 to 21,000 µS/cm, and the water quality types were diverse including Ca(or Na)-HCO3, Ca(or Na)-HCO3(Cl), Na-Cl(HCO3), Na-Cl types. It is believed that this diversity of water quality is due to the mixing of seawater and fresh groundwater generated by infiltration of precipitation and surface water through soil and weathered part. In this study, we discussed whether this water quality diversity and the presence of saline groundwater are due to present seawater intrusion or to remnant high-saline pore water in sediments during flushing out process. For this, rain water, surface water, seawater, and groundwater were compared regarding the water quality characteristics, tritium content, oxygen/hydrogen stable isotopic composition, and 87Sr/86Sr ratio. The oxygen/hydrogen stable isotopic compositions indicated that water composition of saline groundwaters with large EC values are composed of a mixture of those of fresh groundwater and surface water. Also, the young groundwater estimated by tritium content has generally higher NO3 content. All these characteristics showed that fresh groundwater and surface water have continued to affect the high-saline groundwater quality in the study area. In addition, considering the deviation pattern in the diagrams of Na/Cl ratio versus Cl content and SAR (sodium adsorption ratio) versus Cl content, in which two end members of fresh surface-ground water and seawater are assumed, it is interpreted that the groundwater in the study area is not experiencing present seawater intrusion, but flush out and retreating from ancient saline formation water.
The effects of clearcutting on soil chemical ingredients and stream water quality have been investigated at a natural deciduous forest catchment within the Seoul National University Research Forest in Mt. Paekun, Chunnam province during the periods of 1993 to 1998. Soil chemical ingredients and stream water qualities were monitored at a 13 ha clearcutting site and a non-treatment site nearby. During the first and second years after harvesting, the levels of total-N, and exchangeable ions (K/sup +/, Na/sup +/, Ca/sup 2+/, Mg/sup 2+/) decreased compared to the values of before harvesting. During the fifth years after harvesting, these levels were significantly higher than those during the first and second years after harvesting. But the chemical characteristics of soil were not changed at all. pH of water in the harvesting area was 6.5 in stream water. Among the nutrients, Cd, Pb, Cu, and phosphate were not found, and the level of BOD reached at the level of the domestic use suitable for drinking. Turbidity, odor, taste, NH/sub 4//sup +/ -N, NO/sub 3//sup -/-N, standard plate count, and coliform were also low enough to be used as the domestic use for drinking by the near villagers. During the first and second years after harvesting, BOD increased to about 1 ppm. For that reason, the harvesting planning should be built in the harvesting area in consideration of the control of water quality in the stream.
