  • The fact that a reaction between organothioenamine phosphonate and styrene oxide produces a derivative of cyclopropane has been proved by structural identification. This suggests that an anionic oxygen atom from the ring opening of the styrene oxide by nucleophilic attack of thioenamine phosphonate links to the phosphorous atom to from a betaine as an intermediate which is followed by cleavage of the weak P-C bond. The dextrorotatory optical activity of the product showed that the reaction was under the control of steric stability of the benzyl carbon in styrene which leads to the product through a sterically stable pathway.

  • The organic memory device was made by the plasma polymerization method which was not the dry process but the wet process. The memory device consist of the styrene and MMA monomer as the insulating layer, MMA monomer as the tunneling layer and Au thin film as the memory layer which was fabricated by thermal evaporation method. The I-V characteristics of fabricated memory device got the hysteresis voltage of 27 V at 40/-40 V double sweep measuring conditions. At this time, the optimized structure was 7 nm of Au thin film as floating gate, 400 nm of styrene thin film as insulating layer and 30 nm of MMA thin film as tunneling layer. Therefore we got the charge trapping characteristics by the hysteresis voltage. From the paper, styrene indicated a good charge trapping characteristics better than MMA. In the future, we expect to make devices by using styrene thin film rather than Au thin film.

  • The microsomal epoxide hydrolase gene (referred to as mMCEH) of Mugil cephalus was cloned by PCR, and then inserted to pColdI and pET-21b(+) vector, respectively. The recombinant E. coli possessing the recombinant plasmids exhibited the enantioperference toward (R)-styrene oxide. When enantioselective kinetic resolutions were conducted with 20 mM racemic styrene oxide, enantiopure (S)-styrene oxide was obtained with high enantiopurity more than 99% enantiomeric excess (ee) and 24.50% yield by using the recombinant E. coli harboring pET-21b(+)/mMCEH.

  • A method for quantitative determination of styrene dimer and trimer, which are suspected as endocrine disruptors, in foods and containers was studied. For residual contents of styrene dimer and trimer in two-kinds of containers, which contained instant noodle and yogurt, sample pieces were completely dissolved in tetrahydrofuran. The polymer was precipitated with n-hexane, a portion of supernatant was concentrated for analysis. A sensitive method was also optimized for the quantification of styrene dimer and trimer in foods such as instant cup noodle and yogurt by using GC/MS. Limits of Detection were about 3.2-87.0 ppb for styrene dimers and trimers. The highest recovery was obtained by extraction with acetone/hexane(1:1), followed by florisil clean-up. The levels of styrene dimer and trimer migrated by food simulants were much higher in heptane.

  • Background: Styrene is one of the aromatic compounds used in acetonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) producing petrochemicals, which has an impact on health of workers. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the health risks of styrene emitted from the petrochemical industry in Iran. Methods: Air samples were collected based on NIOSH 1501 method. The samples were analyzed by the Varian-cp3800 gas chromatograph. Finally, risk levels of styrene's health effects on employees were assessed by the quantitative method of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the semiquantitative way by the Singapore Occupational Safety and Health Association. Results: Based on the results, the employees had the highest average exposure to styrene vapors (4.06 × 10-1mg.(kg - day)-1) in the polybutadiene latex (PBL) unit. Therefore, the most top predictors of cancer and non-cancer risk were 2.3×10-4 and 7.26 × 10-1, respectively. Given that the lowest average exposure (1.5 × 10-2mg.(kg - day)-1) was in the dryer unit, the prediction showed a moderate risk of cancer (0.8 × 10-6) and non-cancer (2.3 × 10-3) for the employees. The EPA method also predicted that there would be a definite cancer risk in 16% and a probable risk in 76% of exposures. However, according to the semiquantitative approach, the rate of risk was at the "low" level for all staff. The results showed that there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the units in exposure and health risk of styrene (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Given the high risk of styrene's health effects, appropriate control measures are required to reduce the exposure level.

  • The treatment of styrene vapor was carried out using the biofilter packed with loess/polyurethane composite during continuous operation of 74 days. The microorganisms were adapted within 2-3 days under the experimental conditions of inlet concentration and empty bed contact time (EBCT). At 200 sec of EBCT, the removal efficiency of styrene was 100\% with 200 ppmv of inlet concentration, while $92\%$ with 400 ppmv of inlet concentration. The biofilter showed the stable removal efficiencies of over $74\%$ under the EBCT range from 300 to 75 sec at the 150 ppmv of inlet styrene concentration. The maximum capacity of styrene removal for the biofilter packed with loess/polyurethane was $29g/m^3/hr$. During continuous operation of 74 days, pH of the drain water changed slightly and the pressure drop through the biofilter column was below $45\;mmH_2O/m$.

  • Core-shell Poly(styrene-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) (poly(St-co-NIPAm) was prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization of styrene (St) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) in aqueous solution with potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. The effects of St/NIPAm ratio, concentrations of monomer and crosslinker were studied. Also, Thermo sensitivity of microgels prepared was investigated. Particle size of microgels increased with increasing mol ratio of NIPAm to styrene. Transmittance of the microgel dispersion decreased rapidly when heated above a low critical solution temperature (near $32{\sim}34^{\circ}C$, cloud point). Swelling ratio of the microgel increased with increasing of the concentration of monomer (NIPAm) and decreased proportional to the concentration of crosslinker.

  • The ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chlormethyl styrene - 1,4 - divinylbenzene(DVB) with 1%, 2%, 4% and 8%-crosslinking and 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic ligand by copolymerization method. Content of chlorine in styrene-DVB copolymer was decreased as crosslink increased and it is because as crosslink increased 1%, 2%, 4% and 8% DVB content increased and crosslink density increased and cavity was reduced. Functional group of resin almost disappeared as C-C1 peak around $700cm^{-1}$ was substituted with 1-aza-18-C-6 macrocyclic ligand and new peak of C-N around $1020cm^{-1}$ appeared, so it was confirmed that styrene-DVB copolymer and ligand were compounded. As crosslink increased in the analysis of element contents, it resulted in the reduction of nitrogen content and it is because as crosslink increased, it led to the reduction of chlorine content in the process of substitution reaction and it affected macrocyclic ligand substituted. Thermo analysis curve of functional synthetic resin decomposed three part of 1-aza-18-C-6, styrene, and DVB. Form of functional synthetic resin showed distortion of its particles as macrocyclic ligand was introduced to styrene-DVB copolymer and hydrogen of ligand caused substitution with chlorine element of styrene molecule.

  • This study was carried out in order to manufacture the high quality coated paper. High quality coated paper includes not only present state but also the state of the future. So in this study, acrylic-styrene emulsion which polymerized in laboratory was compared with SB(Styrene-butadiene) latex during thermal aging. The coated paper with three different formulations which controlled the dosage of acrylic-styrene emulsion were prepared. The coated paper were thermally aged at $105^{\circ}C$ for 18days and the optical properties were measured. Brightness, whiteness and CIE L value were higher during thermal aging with increasing amount of acrylic-styrene emulsion. CIE $a^*$ value was higher and CIE $b^*$ value decreased with increasing amount of acrylic-styrene emulsion. These results indicate that high quality coated paper which has anti -thermal aging property can be manufactured with acrylic-styrene emulsion.
