In this study, a theoretical method to analyze the vibration of a T-type Timoshenko frame is proposed. The effects of axial inertia, rotatory inertia and shear deformation of each branch are considered. The orthogonality of any two distinct sets of mode shape functions is also demonstrated. Vibration of the frame due to moving loads is studied by the method and the response characteristics of the frame are investigated. Furthermore, the effect of column length on the response of the frame is also studied.

Automobile crash optimization is nonlinear dynamic response structural optimization that uses highly nonlinear crash analysis in the time domain. The equivalent static loads (ESLs) method has been proposed to solve such problems. The ESLs are the static load sets generating the same displacement field as that of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Linear static response structural optimization is employed with the ESLs as multiple loading conditions. Nonlinear dynamic analysis and linear static structural optimization are repeated until the convergence criteria are satisfied. Nonlinear dynamic crash analysis for frontal analysis may not have boundary conditions, but boundary conditions are required in linear static response optimization. This study proposes a method to use the inertia relief method to overcome the mismatch. An optimization problem is formulated for the design of an automobile frontal structure and solved by the proposed method.

This study explores the free, out-of-plane vibrations of horizontally circular curved beams. The differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams, including the effects of warping and rotatory inertia, are derived and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method and the Determinant Search method combined with Regula-Falsi method are used to integrate the differential equations and to obtain the natural frequencies, respectively. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the stiffness parameter, and the warping parameter. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be used practically for the design of curved member systems.

This paper deals with the free vibrations of immersed columns with soft base. The support condition of the column is represented by using a translational spring and a rotational spring. The eccentricity and rotatory inertia of the concentrated mass at the top are taken into account. In the governing equation for the free vibration of column, the density of immersed part was modified to account for the added fluid mass. The governing differential equations are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented to show the effects on the natural frequencies of non-dimensional system parameters: the mass density ratio of fluid to column, the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the ratio of tip mass to total column mass, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, the eccentricity, the translation spring parameter, and the rotational spring parameter.

This paper deals with the influence of elastic foundations on natural frequencies of curved beams. Taking into account the effects of rotatoy inertia and shear deformation, the differential equations governing free, out-of-plane vibrations of circular curved beams resting on Winkler-type foundations are derived and solved numerically. Hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered in numerical examples. The lowest three natural frequencies are claculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the foundation parameter, and the width ratio of contact area between the beam and foundation. The effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are also analyzed.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of tapered columns with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass of rotatory inertia with translational elastic support at the other end. The column model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered columns subjected to a subtangential follower force is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. And the bisection method is used to calculate the critical divergence/flutter load. After having verified the results of the present study, the frequency and critical divergence/flutter load are presented as functions of various nondimensional system parameters.

Due to the low elastic modulus of FRP, concrete members reinforced with FRP rebars show greater deflections than members reinforced with steel rebars. Deflection is one of the important factors to consider the serviceability of horizontal members. In this study flexural test of AFRP reinforced concrete beams was performed considering reinforcement ratio and compressive strength as parameters. The test results indicated that flexural capacity and stiffness increase in proportion to the reinforcement ratio. The test results were compared with existing proposed equations for the effective moment of inertia including ACI 440. The most of the proposed equations were found to over-estimate the effective moment of inertia while the equation proposed by Bischoff and Scanlon (2007) most accurately predicted the values obtained through actual testing.
The differential equations governing in-plane free vibrations of the elastic, catenary arch with rotatory inertia are derived in Cartesian coordinates. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for such arches with unsymmetric axes, for both clamped-clamped and hinged-hinged end constraints. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without rotatory inertia, as a function of three nondimensional system parameters; the span to cord length ratio e, the slenderness ratio s, and the rise to cord length ratio f. Experimental measures of frequencies and mode shapes for several laboratory-scale catenary models serve to validate the theoretical results.
