A Disparate Low Loss DC to 90 GHz Wideband Series Switch

  • This paper presents design and simulation of wide band RF microswitch that uses electrostatic actuation for its operation. RF MEMS devices exhibit superior high frequency performance in comparison to conventional devices. Similar techniques that are used in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) can be employed to design and fabricate MEMS devices and traditional batch-processing methods can be used for its manufacturing. The proposed switch presents a novel design approach to handle reliability concerns in MEMS switches like dielectric charging effect, micro welding and stiction. The shape has been optimized at actuation voltage of 14-16 V. The switch has an improved restoring force of 20.8 μN. The design of the proposed switch is very elemental and primarily composed of electrostatic actuator, a bridge membrane and coplanar waveguide which are suspended over the substrate. The simple design of the switch makes it easy for fabrication. Typical insertion and isolation of the switch at 1 GHz is -0.03 dB and -71 dB and at 85 GHz it is -0.24 dB and -29.8 dB respectively. The isolation remains more than - 20 db even after 120 GHz. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of a metal contact switch that shows such a high and sustained isolation and performance at W-band frequencies with an excellent figure-of merit (fc=1/2.pi.Ron.Cu =1,900 GHz). This figure of merit is significantly greater than electronic switching devices. The switch would find extensive application in wideband operations and areas where reliability is a major concern.

  • Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) formed by alkanethiol adsorption to thin metal film are widely being investigated for applications as coating layer for anti-stiction or friction reduction and in fabrication of micro structure of molecules and bio molecules. Recently, there have been many researches on micro patterning using the advantages of very thin thickness and etching resistance of Self-Assembled Monolayers in selective etching of thin metal film. In this report, we present the several machining method to form the nanoscale structure by Mask-Less laser patterning using alknanethiolate Self-Assembled Monolayers such as thin metal film etching and heterogeneous SAM structure formation.

Comparison of the Tribological behaviors of Various Organic Molecular Films (다양한 유기분자막의 마찰특성 비교)

  • Monolayers such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) have received considerable attention to reduce stiction and friction in micro-devices and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Various organic molecular films were investigated to obtain better understanding of their tribological behaviors and adhesion property. The organic molecular films studied in this work are: epoxysilane SAMs, octadecyltricholosilane (OST), multi-layers composed of epoxysilane SAMs, poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene](SEBS) and compound of epoxy resin and poly (paraphenylene)(EP/PPP). The pull-off forces of these films were also obtained from force-distance curves measured in static mode of operation of atomic force microscope(AFM). Tribological tests were conducted with a ball-on-flat reciprocating friction tester. The OST showed the lowest pull-off force, indicating its low adhesion property. It was revealed that, the OST, EP/PPP and the multi-layer of epoxysilane SAMs, SEBS and EP/PPP exhibited good tribological properties at the lower load (0.3 N) whereas the OST showed best performance at the higher load (1.8 N).

  • One aspect of the stiction problem may be explained by the action of capillary forces in conjunction with surface elasticity. In the present work, the interaction between two elastic half-spaces separated by a small liquid bridge is investigated. By minimizing the total free energy stored in the interface (including elastic energy and surface energy), the equilibrium interface geometry is determined analytically in the case where there is no solid-solid contact. A non-dimensional number, $N_c=299\frac{{\gamma}^2_{LA}cos^2{\theta}V_o}{E^{'2}H^5}$ is found to govern the structure stability. When $N_c{\ge}1$, the two surfaces jump into solid-solid contact and, once this occurs, the contact area will continue to expand until the two surfaces are in full contact.

Position Control of a Pneumatic Cylinder Considering Friction Compensation (마찰력 보상을 고려한 공기압 실린더의 위치제어)

  • The paper describes a technique that compensates a friction in pneumatic cylinder to perform the position control. The friction is one of the most common nonlinearities present in pneumatic actuating systems. For accurate position control and low velocity control, control strategies usually rely on accurate estimation of friction. This paper presents a observer to estimate the friction force in the pneumatic cylinder from the pressures in cylinder chambers. Also, the stiction compensation of a pneumatic cylinder is obtained by adding pulses to the control signal using impulsive control. The characteristics of the pulses in impulsive control are determined from the control action. The simulation results are proved that the method proposed here is effective.

  • This paper deals with a position control problem of a hydraulic proportional position control system using a nonlinear friction compensation control. As nonlinear friction, stiction and coulomb friction forces are considered and modeled as deadzone and external disturbance respectively. In order to compensate this nonlinearities, we designed the controller which is the adaptive friction compensator using discrete time Model Reference Adaptive Control method in this paper. Digital Signal Processing board is employed for data acquisition and manipulation. The experimental results show that response is slow and steady-state error cannot be compensated properly without friction compensation but this compensator is effective to obtain fast response and good steady-state response.

  • A $50{\times}50{\mu}m^2$ aluminum micromirror array is fabricated using shadow evaporation process. The fabrication process is very simple with use of shadow evaporation process, and the micromirror array has a high fill-factor. The static and dynamic characteristics such as deflection angle vs. applied voltage, step response, and frequency response are measured using a contact free optical measurement technique. The downward threshold voltage was 8 V, step response time was $13.5{\mu}s$ when 32 V step voltage applied, and a resonance observed at 11kHz. The lifetime of micromirror with anti-stiction coating was tested and micromirror operated successfully over 200 million cycles of touch-down operations.

  • We present a surface-micromachined polysilicon capacitive accelerometer using unevenly distributed comb electrodes. The unique features of the accelerometer include a perforated proof-mass and the inner and outer comb electrodes with uneven electrode gaps. The perforated proof-mass reduces stiction between the structure and the substrate and the unevenly distributed electrodes shorten the electrode length required for a given sensitivity. The polysilicon accelerometer has been fabricated by the conventional 6-mask surface-micromachining process and showes a sensitivity of 1.03mV/g with a hybrid detection circuitry.
