ORDER RESTRICTED TESTS FOR SYMMETRY AGAINST POSITIVE BIASEDNESS

  • Two new types of positive biasedness, which are closely related to Type III positive biasedness (Yanagimoto and Sibuya, 1972), are proposed. We call these near Type III positive biasedness. Though no implication between Type II and near Type III biasedness exists, near Type III seems to be less restrictive than Type II biasedness. Constrained maximum likelihood estimates of distribution functions under near Type III positive bisedness are obtained. The likelihood ratio tests of symmetry against new positive biasedness restrictions are proposed. A small simulation study is conducted to compare the performance of the tests.

  • The purpose of the study was to explore the potential of the Social Network Analysis as an analytical tool for scientific investigation of learner-learner, or learner-tutor interaction within an Computer Supported Corporative Learning (CSCL) environment. Theoretical and methodological implication of the Social Network Analysis had been discussed. Following theoretical analysis, an exploratory empirical study was conducted to test statistical correlation between traditional performance measures such as achievement and team contribution index, and the centrality measure, one of the many quantitative measures the Social Network Analysis provides. Results indicate the centrality measure was correlated with the higher order learning performance and the peer-evaluated contribution indices. An interpretation of the results and their implication to instructional design theory and practices were provided along with some suggestions for future research.

Design of Statistical-QoS VPN in IP Networks

  • In this paper the authors propose a theoretic framework to design the Virtual Private Network (VPN) via which the Quality of Services (QoSs) are guaranteed over IP networks. The required QoS is a very strict packet loss probability or a probability that packet delay does not exceed a certain target value in a statistical manner. QoSs are guaranteed by providing a statistical bandwidth similar to equivalent bandwidth, which is computed so that the provided bandwidth is sufficient to guarantee those requirements. Two typical network architectures are considered in constructing VPN, the customer pipe scheme and the Hose scheme, and we propose a method to compute the amount of the required bandwidth for the two schemes. Finally, we investigate the implication of the scheme via numerical experiments.

A Study on Analysis of Likelihood Principle and its Educational Implications (우도원리에 대한 분석과 그에 따른 교육적 시사점에 대한 연구)

  • This study analyzes the likelihood principle and elicits an educational implication. As a result of analysis, this study shows that Frequentist and Bayesian interpret the principle differently by assigning different role to that principle from each other. While frequentist regards the principle as 'the principle forming a basis for statistical inference using the likelihood ratio' through considering the likelihood as a direct tool for statistical inference, Bayesian looks upon the principle as 'the principle providing a basis for statistical inference using the posterior probability' by looking at the likelihood as a means for updating. Despite this distinction between two methods of statistical inference, two statistics schools get clues to compromise in a regard of using frequency prior probability. According to this result, this study suggests the statistics education that is a help to building of students' critical eye by their comparing inferences based on likelihood and posterior probability in the learning and teaching of updating process from frequency prior probability to posterior probability.

A Comparative Static Study on the Variables' Significance to Urban Quality of Life (도시인의 '삶의 질' 결정요인에 관한 비교정태분석)

  • As a succeeding analysis on the variables' significance to 'Quality of Life(QOL)'(Kim, Dong-Yoon, 2012a), which has a purpose of trying to enhance the intersubjectiveness by means of quantitive methods to find the factors on the QOL, this study aims at finding the time serial change in the deciding factors to deepen the related researches on the theme. Using the similar statistical methods such as multiple regression and factor analysis for "2012 Seoul Survey" this study shows two similar points and one differentia. The similarities include the fact that five subcategories of happiness have relative statistical importance in the order of (1)financial condition, (2)health condition, (3)social activities, (4)community relationship and (5)family life and the fact that the five subcategories are conceptually different from the 5 deciding factors, which means the possibility to improve the survey design. And the difference is the 5 factors such as (1) social trust - amenities, (2)cultural life, (3)social indiscrimination - hope for elevation, (4)sharing - giving and (5)community spirit which are largely different from preceding study. Although only the first two factors have statistical significance this result has a implication that they reflect the new paradigm of social capital and the essential necessity of human survival; sharing-community-culture.

Short Term Interest Rate Model Using Box-Cox Transformation

  • This paper propose a new short-term interest rate model having a different nonlinear drift function and the same diffusion coefficient with Chan et al. (1992) model. The fractional polynomial power of the drift function in our model is linked to the local volatility elasticity of the diffusion coefficient. While the nonlinear drift function estimated by $A\"{\i}t$-Sahalia (1996a) and others has a feature that higher interest rates tend to revert downward and low rates upward, the drift function estimated by our nonlinear model shows that higher interest rate mean-reverts strongly, but, medium rates has almost zero drift and low rates has a very small drift. This characteristic coincides the empirical result based on the nonparametric methodology by Stanton (1997) and the implication by the scatter plot of the short rate data.

Monte-Carlo Simulation to the Color Distribution within Galactic Globular Clusters

  • According to the CCD photometric studies, the color distributions of globular clusters with collapsed cores, which are characterized by a power law cusp in thier surface brighness pronto, become bluer toward their centers, but this is not the case in the flat core clusters which are fit by the King model. To test the statistical implication of the color distribution within globular clusters, we built the sample dusters which follows the surface brightness pofile of the King model and power law cusp profile with the Sandage's standao luminosity function for M3 and the Salpter's initial mass functions. On the results from simulations based on the uniform random number generation the color gadients within globualr dusters mar be not likely to come from the statistical random distributions of stars but from the dynamical process on the cluster evolution.

A summary-concept based analysis on the representative values and the measures of spread with the 9th grade Korean mathematics textbook (중학교 3학년 수학교과서 통계단원에 나타난 요약개념 분석)

  • This study is an analysis on the focus of textbooks regarding the statistical chapters of "measures of representative(central tendency) and of the spread". Applying the summary-concept criteria of Juhyeon Nam(2007), 4 kinds of aspect of the chapter; (1) definition and its teleological validity of the measures of representative, (2) definition and practical value of the measures of spread (3) distributional form on the measures of representative and of spread (4) location and scale preservation or invariance of the measures of representative and of spread were observed. On the measures of representative, some definitions were insufficient to check the teleological validity of the measure. Most definitions of the measure of spread were based on the practical view points but no preparation for the future statistical inferences were found even by implication. Some books mention about the measures of representative and of spread for distributions, but we could not find any comments on the correspondence between the sample mean and the expectation of a distribution or population mean. However it is stimulant that some books check the validity of corresponding measures with the location and scale preservation or invariant property, that were not found in the previous curriculum.

An Analysis of Methods for Teaching Bar and Line Graphs in Elementary Mathematics Textbooks (초등 수학 교과서의 막대그래프와 꺾은선그래프 지도에 대한 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify how didactic transposition (teaching and learning methods) has occurred and developed in the teaching of graphs in elementary school mathematics textbooks for third and fourth graders according to the previous and current curricula. In this study, we analyzed the lesson units on bar graphs and line graphs in mathematics textbooks for each curriculum, from the fifth curriculum to the 2015 revised curriculum. We also investigated the implication of statistics education deriving from didactic transposition (teaching and learning methods). We found that the timing of teaching bar and line graphs was rarely changed as the curriculum has changed. In addition, the use of technology was not actively implemented in school statistics, although the curriculum emphasized the use of technology in statistical education. Lastly, the textbooks did not address the variability and distribution of data and the sample or sampling process, which are significant statistical concepts. Based on the findings of this study, we suggest how to teach statistical graphs and what to consider for the next mathematics textbook.
