  • We berlin with a brief review of some important advances made in statistical theory over the last decade. The choice of topics is decidedly influenced by personal interests. Based on this review, we then propose some possible scenarios about the future of statistics.

한국한의학연구원 논문집에 사용된 통계기법의 평가 (An Evaluation of the Statistical Techniques Used in the 1995-2007 Editions of the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine)

  • Background and Purpose : The purpose of this study was done to investigate what kinds of statistical techniques have been used to analyze data from oriental medicine research Methods : 135 original articles which used statistical techniques in their data analysis were selected from the articles published in The Journal of Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine(JKIOM) between 1995 to 2007. Results : Among 135 articles, 59 articles used descriptive statistics while 76 articles used inferential statistics for data analysis. For that 76 articles, two-sample t-test(33 articles), analysis of variance(29 articles), regression(9 articles), chi-square test(5 articles), nonparametic test(4 articles), Fisher's exact test(3 articles), and other test(9 articles) were chosen to analyze the data. SAS and SPSS statistical softwares(82.50%) were mostly used to analyze the data. Nonparametic tests were used to 4 articles(6.97%) of 67 articles and parametic tests were used to 63 articles(93.03%) of 67 articles. Among 29 articles used analysis of variance, duncan(8 articles), dunnet(4 articles), bonferroni(4 articles), turkey(3 articles), scheff(1 article) were used to do multiple comparison. 9 articles did not carry out the multiple comparison. Conclusions : It was found that the frequencies of statistical package used and statistical analysis used were not much by now. High level statistical analyses were not used most for oriental medicine research.

중등수학교사와 일반인의 통계적 소양 분석 -여론조사 결과의 이해수준을 중심으로- (An Analysis on the Statistical Literacy of Secondary Mathematics Teachers and Adults -Focused on the Level of Understanding in a Poll Results-)

  • 본 연구는 중등수학교사와 일반인의 여론조사 결과에 대한 이해수준을 바탕으로 그들의 통계적 소양을 알아보기 위한 것으로, 이를 위해 중등수학교사 20명과 일반인 20명을 연구참여자로 하여 반구조화된 면담을 실시하고 여기서 얻은 자료를 분석하였다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 여론조사 결과에 포함되는 통계 용어 및 표현의 의미를 정확히 이해하고 있는 중등수학교사와 일반인이 드물었다. 둘째, 연구참여자의 70%가 통계적 소양 수준이 3, 4수준에 이르지 못하고 있는 것으로 조사되었다. 셋째, 중등수학교사의 통계적 소양 수준이 일반인에 비해 상대적으로 높게 나타났다.

Study on Improving Oriental Medicine Statistical System for Multidimensional Statistical Data

  • Oriental medicine statistics are essential in research planning, research evaluation, and policy decision based on objective data. However, integrated administration of such statistics is not presently possible in the oriental medicine field, which has been slow in incorporating information communication technology. In an effort to address this problem, the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine (KIOM) developed an oriental medicine statistical system in 2009, and the system has been offered in the traditional medicine information portal of OASIS. However, according to a 2010 survey targeting OASIS users, those surveys reported that needs for a system where various statistical data can be extracted via an interactive approach to multidimensional data. As a result of an analysis of the functions of the existing system, it was found that it is necessary to array and arithmetically analyze Stats Value, Drill Up & Drill Down, and Pivot. To this end, the existing DB schema should be redesigned. Based on our analysis result, we redesigned the database into a structure that is applicable to the reverse pivot algorithm. We used J2EE/JSP and a Flex framework to design and develop an oriental medicine statistical system that can provide multidimensional statistical data. Considering that the improved oriental medicine statistical system is planned to be offered by OASIS of KIOM, utilization and value of oriental medicine statistical data are expected to be enhanced.

상관분석과 회귀분석을 이용한 논문의 통계활용 분석 (Analysis on Reports of Statistical Testings for Correlation and Regression)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the accuracy and adequacy of research papers reporting statistical testings for correlation and regression. Method: Original research articles utilized correlation and regression analysis were reviewed from the Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing published from the year 2004 to 2006. Thirty-six papers were evaluated in accordance with formatted criteria in respect to an inclusiveness of research title, accuracy of statistical methods and presentation styles, and errors in reporting statistical outcomes. Result: Thirty articles (83.3%) utilized Pearson's correlational analysis, and ten articles did regression analysis. Lack of accurate understanding and interpretation of the statistical method was a main fault. Basic assumptions and diagnostic testings for each statistical method were not performed or described in most of the studies. Some points like consistency of research questions with statistical methods and criteria for sample size were still left out in part. Details of the presentation in the reporting of outcomes were not complied with the guidelines, which need careful concerns of the writers. Errors in English of result tables were found in more than one third of the tables. Conclusion: The outcome would be reflected in the submission guidelines for future writers. To reach the level comparable with internationally recognized nursing journals, concrete knowledge to apply statistical methods should be ensured in the processes of submission, reviews, and editing.

초등학교 수학 교과서에서 통계 그래프의 틀에 대한 교육적 고찰 (A Study on the Frames of Statistical Graphs in the Elementary School Mathematics Textbooks)

  • 일상에서는 통계 그래프의 형태가 매우 다양하지만, 초등학교 수학 교과서에 제시되는 통계 그래프는 교수학적 맥락에 의해 그 틀이 매우 정형화되어 있다. 본 연구에서는 초등학교 수학 교과서에 제시되는 통계 그래프 틀의 교육적인 의의를 고찰하고, 우리나라, 호주, 그리고 MiC 수학 교과서에 제시된 그래프 틀을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 초등학교 수학 교과서에서 통계 그래프의 틀은 (1) 그래프의 구성 요소에 주목하게 하고, (2) 그래프를 그릴 때 보조적인 역할을 하며, (3) 학습 내용을 통계적 문제해결에 적용하도록 돕는 역할을 한다. 우리나라의 초등학교 수학 교과서는 (1)과 (2)에 주목한 표 형태의 그래프 틀을, MiC 교과서는 (3)에 주목한 다양한 형태의 그래프 틀을 제시하고 있었다. 따라서 저학년 수준에서는 표 형태의 그래프 틀을 이용하였으나, 학년이 올라갈수록 축 형태의 그래프 틀로 점진적인 변화를 추구했던 호주의 초등학교 수학 교과서 사례를 참고할 필요가 있다.

의학 논문 작성 시 발생하는 흔한 통계적 오류 (Statistical Mistakes Commonly Made When Writing Medical Articles)

  • 의학 논문을 작성할 때 통계학은 필수적인 요소로 알려져 있고 중요성이 강조되고 있지만 많은 논문에서 통계적 오류가 발생하고 있다. 의학 논문에서 발생할 수 있는 통계적 오류는 설계 단계에서의 오류, 분석 단계에서의 오류, 작성과 해석 단계에서의 오류로 분류할 수 있다. 설계 단계에서는 연구의 가설이나 자료의 수집 및 분석 계획이 명확하지 않으면 오류가 발생한다. 분석 단계에서는 연구의 목적과 자료의 특성을 충분히 고려하지 않고 올바른 분석 방법을 적용하지 않으면 오류가 발생한다. 분석을 수행한 후에는 결과를 해석하여 논문을 작성하게 되고, 이 단계에서 분석 방법을 잘못 작성하거나 결과를 올바르게 해석하지 못하면 오류가 발생한다. 본 논문에서는 의학 논문에서 흔히 발생하는 통계적 오류에 대해 고찰하고 오류를 줄이는데 기여하고자 한다.

사회적지지의 효과 모델 및 통계분석방법에 관한 국내간호논문 분석 (Major Effect Models of Social Support and Its Statistical Methods in Korean Nursing Research)

  • The purpose of the present study is 1) to explain major effect models (main, moderating, and mediating) of social support and statistical methods for testing the effect models and 2) to analyze and evaluate the consistency in the use of the effect models and its statistical methods in Korean nursing studies. A total of 57 studies were selected from Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing, Journal of Korean Academic Society of Adult Nursing, Journal of Korean Women's Health Nursing Academic Society, Journal of Fundamentals of Nursing, Journal of Korean Community Nursing, Journal of Korean Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Academic Society, and Journal of Korean Pediatric Nursing Academic Society published in the year of 1990-1999. In results, most studies on social support performed in Korea Nursing Society were about a main effect model. There are few studies on moderating or mediating model of social support. Thus, it was difficult to find research findings how, why, under what conditions social support impacted on health outcomes. Most studies on the moderating or mediating effect model of social support used statistical methods for testing main effect model rather than for testing moderating or mediating effect model. That is, there are inconsistency between effect models of social support and its statistical methods in Korean nursing researches. Therefore, it is recommended to perform studies on moderating or mediating effect model and use appropriate statistical methods.

포아송 분포를 가정한 Wafer 수준 Statistical Bin Limits 결정방법과 표본크기 효과에 대한 평가 (Methods and Sample Size Effect Evaluation for Wafer Level Statistical Bin Limits Determination with Poisson Distributions)

  • In a modern semiconductor device manufacturing industry, statistical bin limits on wafer level test bin data are used for minimizing value added to defective product as well as protecting end customers from potential quality and reliability excursion. Most wafer level test bin data show skewed distributions. By Monte Carlo simulation, this paper evaluates methods and sample size effect regarding determination of statistical bin limits. In the simulation, it is assumed that wafer level test bin data follow the Poisson distribution. Hence, typical shapes of the data distribution can be specified in terms of the distribution's parameter. This study examines three different methods; 1) percentile based methodology; 2) data transformation; and 3) Poisson model fitting. The mean square error is adopted as a performance measure for each simulation scenario. Then, a case study is presented. Results show that the percentile and transformation based methods give more stable statistical bin limits associated with the real dataset. However, with highly skewed distributions, the transformation based method should be used with caution in determining statistical bin limits. When the data are well fitted to a certain probability distribution, the model fitting approach can be used in the determination. As for the sample size effect, the mean square error seems to reduce exponentially according to the sample size.
