This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of insecticides on control of Spodoptera exigua, growth characteristics, and dry root yield in the cultivation of Alisma plantago after early maturing rice cropping. All pesticides treated had no effect on growth and flowering rate of Alisma plantago. The major insecticides were teflubenzuron Wp, 5%, tebufenozide Wp, 8%, iufenuron Ec, 5%, and tebufenozide Wp, 5%. Dry root yield were increased largely with tebufenozide Wp, 5%(20 g/20 l), insecticide than the other insecticides and no control. All insecticides had no injury with standard dosage. On the other hand, all insecticides had slight injury in the double dosage level for the Alisma plantago.
Some high frequency sounds alter physiological processes of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. This study investigated the effect of ultrasound (${\geq}$ 20 kHz) on larval feeding, pupal development, and adult mating behavior of S. exigua. Ultrasound suppressed feeding behavior of fifth instar larvae, and 30 or 45 kHz treatment inhibited more than 50% of feeding activity. Larvae treated with ultrasound exhibited alterations in major nutrient compositions in the hemolymph plasma. Plasma protein levels decreased with an increase in ultrasound frequency. In contrast, sugar levels increased with an increase in ultrasound frequency. Lipid levels increased with an increase in ultrasound frequency up to 30 kHz and then decreased at treatments > 30 kHz. Hemocytes, the fat body, and epidermis expressed three heat shock proteins and apolipophorin III. Ultrasound treatment markedly inhibited expression of some stress-related genes. Ultrasound treatment also inhibited S. exigua pupal development by extending the pupal developmental period and preventing adult emergence. Last, ultrasound treatment significantly inhibited adult mating behavior, which resulted in a significant decrease in female fecundity. These results show that ultrasound is a physiological stress to S. exigua.
Entomopathogenic bacteria (Xenorhabdus nematophila, X. sp. and Photorhabdus temperata subsp. temperata) isolated from entomopathogenic nematodes express potent insecticidal activity in insect hemocoel. They are also known to suppress insect immune mediation by inhibiting phospholipase $A_2$, leading to host immunosuppression. This study analyzed effects of their cultured broths on inhibiting insect immunosuppression. For this, we removed all bacterial cells using $0.2\;{\mu}m$ pore sized membrane from the bacteria-cultured broth. All three sterilized cultured media, in dose-dependent manners, significantly inhibited hemocyte-spreading behavior of 5th instar larvae of Spodoptera exigua. However, they showed differential inhibitory activities among different bacterial species, in which X. nematophila showed the most potent inhibitory activity. This immunosuppressive effect was applied to increase the pathogenicity of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). All three bacterial cultured broths including bacterial cells significantly potentiated Bt pathogenicity against young S. exigua larvae when each of them was orally administered in a mixture of low dose of Bt. Finally, we tested the effect of oral administration of the cultured media containing the immunosuppressive compound(s) secreted by the bacteria. The membrane-sterilized cultured broths were mixed with the low dose of Bt and then orally administered to the young S. exigua. Only the cultured medium of X. nematophila showed increase of Bt pathogenicity. These results indicated that the; cultured media of the three bacteria possessed immunosuppressive factor(s), which may act to potentiate Bt toxicity to young S. exigua larvae.
To produce Spodoptera exigua nuclear polyhedrosis virus (SeNPV) using S. exigua larvae, the efficiency of the in vivo production was analysed by larval instar, inoculum and mortality. The results revealed that the mortality of 4th instar larvae inoculated with 1.OX 10' EIBs per ml was 86.7% and the yields of SeNPV was maximal, demonstrating that 4th instar larvae inoculated with 1 . 0l~o6 PIBs per ml were effective to mass production of SeNPV.
The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua is pest which is difficult to control. For eco-friendly beet armyworm managements, we isolated entomopathogenic fungi from soil samples by insect-bait method using Tenebrio molitor and conducted bioassay to larvae of beet armyworm. The result of bioassay, a selected strain Metarhizium anisopliae FT83 caused 100% mortality against first ~ third instar larva of S. exigua at $1{\times}10^8conidia/ml$ and medial lethal time ($LT_{50}$) were 0.5 days, 2.6 days and 2.5 days respectively. Mortality against fourth and fifth larvae were $83.3{\pm}6.2%$ and $86.0{\pm}5.7%$ and medial lethal time ($LT_{50}$) were 4.2 days and 3.6 days respectively. Mortality against pupae and eggs of S. exigua were 100%. M. anisopliae FT83 showed high virulence at all developmental stages of S. exigua.

This study analyzed effects of different sound treatments in frequencies and intensities on digestion and immune physiological processes of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua larvae. Without effect on egg hatch, sound treatments with 100-5,000 Hz at 95 dB suppressed feeding behavior and inhibited a digestive enzyme activity. In addition, two dimensional electrophoresis of midgut luminal proteins indicated a marked difference of the sound-treated larvae. In response to 5,000 Hz at 95 dB, larvae showed a significant decrease in hemocyte nodule formation against fungal challenge along with significant suppression in phospholipase $A_2$ activity in hemocyte and plasma. With increase of sound frequencies, the treated larvae showed an enhanced susceptibility to insecticides. Such sound frequency effect was significantly modulated with different sound intensities. These results suggest that sound treatment may give adverse stress to physiological processes of S. exigua larvae and may be applied to a nonchemical insect pest control.
Polydnavirus is a symbiotic virus of some endoparasitic wasps and plays crucial roles in inhibiting immune responses and retarding development of the parasitized hosts. Cotesia plutellae bracovirus (CpBV) is a polydnavirus suggesting a major causative to change developmental physiology of the parasitized host. Here, we investigated whether CpBV can interrupt development of non-natural host. Beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, is used as a non-permissible host for parasitization of C. plutellae. Extract from the calyx region of C. plutellae contained CpBV, which was confirmed by immunoblotting with a polyclonal antibody raised against CpBV. One female equivalent of CpBV extract was injected into hemocoel of late 4th instar larvae of S. exigua. The injected larvae showed delayed larval period, decrease of body weight gain, and inability of pupal metamorphosis. These inhibitory effect of the CpBV extract was rescued by injection along with CpBV antibody, though the antibody itself did not give any effect on development of the larvae. This result clearly shows that CpBV can interrupt developmental physiology of a non-natural host for its symbiotic wasp.
The concept of innate immunity in insects which refers to the first line of host defense constitutes the humoral and cellular components which are involved in recognition and actively participate in the elimination of the intruding foreign micro- or macro-organisms. Several recent studies suggest that juvenile hormone (JH) modulates the cellular immune reactions in response to pathogen. In this study, pyriproxyfen (a JH agonist as an insect growth regulator) was tested in its any inhibitory effect on the immune reactions of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. To this end, five different hemocyte morphotypes of final instar S. exigua were identified by phase contrast microscopy. Plasmatocytes and granular cells, which constitute about 90% of the total hemocyte count, were prominently distinguished based on their basophilic/acidophilic nature using Giemsa stain. The role of pyriproxyfen on the functional ability of hemocytes was analyzed using FITC-labeled Providencia vermicola for the phagocytic potential of the hemocytes. Both granular cells and plasmatocytes exhibited phagocytosis behavior. Pyriproxyfen significantly inhibited the phagocytosis of both cell types, proposing its novel action as an immunosuppressant.
Studies were conducted to control Spodoptera exigua in Allium fistulosum field using synthetic sex pheromone trap. Heavily, medium and lightly damagd fields at early transplanting time showed no differences in control effects after 8 weeks of establishment of pheromone traps in Allium fistulosum fields. Number of damaged leaves in each treated field was 0.2-3 individuals per 60 hills comparing with 33.2 individuals at non-treated field. Also, the numbers uf male adults attracted to pheromone traps were 1.8-5.0 individuals at the big inning of installation but increased to 25.8, 49.9, 74.9, and 77.4 individuals after 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, respectively. There was a negative correlation between amount of male adults attracted to pheromone traps and number of damaged leaves (r=-0.9572*). Number of adults attracted to various colored light trap for 30 days were 6 in red, 11 in white and none in blue comparing with 1,041 individuals in pheromone trap.
The sublethal temperature (5$^{\circ}$C for 2hr) led the fifth instar larvae of beet armyworm, Spodoprern exigucr (Hiibner), to increase cold tolerance to subzero lethal temperatures ( 'rapid cold hardening' ). The strength of rapid cold hardening was, however, varied among different populations which showed different cold tolerance in response to cold temperatures. To analyse the physiological factors affecting the rapid cold hardening, hernolymph osmolalities. supercooling points, glycerol contents, and cold stress proteins were measured by treating the fifth instar larvae with the sublethal low temperatures. The treated larvae showed increase of hemolymph osmolalities and glycerol contents. Changes of the osmolalities were greater in cold-hardy strains than in cold-susceptible strains. The sublethal temperature also induced them to express the cold-stress proteins (I0 - 20kD) in the hemolymph. but did not to change supercooling points.
