Research about spherical shells been applying most usually is achieved by many investigators already and generalized equation has been derived. But, existent research is limited in case that spherical shell's roof rigidity is isotropy or orthotropy, and research that consider periodicity of rigidity-distribution that can happen by doing spherical shell's roof system by lattice system is not gone entirely. The purpose of this paper is applying Galerkin method to spherical shell that model periodicity of roof rigidity distribution that appear by roof lattice form of large space structure and develop structural analysis program that formularize. Rigidity-model of this research selects that of spherical shell which has 2-way grid. In this paper, buckling-strength and deformation distribution of isotopic spherical shell and 2-way grid spherical shell obtained by developed program could confirm the reliability by comparison with result of existent research.
This study on the elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell by rigia element method is classified into two parts : (1) theoretical consideration on elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell, (2) elastic and elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell with the open stiff ring. In 1982, Y. Tsuboi proposed the new analytical method which is called the rigid element method, for analyzing the elasto-plastic behavior of wall-type precast concrete structures by applying the concepts of rigid bodies-sprins model (i.e., when structures reach their ultimate state of leading, they may be yield, collapsed ana crushed into pieces, and each part or piece of structures mar move like a rigid body.). In this paper, for improvement and expansion this rigid element method, it is proposed the adaptation equation of rectangular-shaped spherical element and rectangular-shaped spherical bending element developed by present authors, and the analytical procedure for the elastic and the elasto-plastic increment method of structures.
This paper describes the application of a coupled finite element-boundary element method to obtain the steady-state response of a hydrophone. The particular structure considered is a flooded piezoelectric spherical shell. The hydrophone is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce an incident plane acoustic pressure onto the outer surface of the sonar spherical shell to electrical potentials on inner and outer surfaces of the shell. The acoustic field formed from the scattered sound pressure is also simulated. And the displacement of the shell caused by the externally incident acoustic pressure is shown in temporal motion. The coupled FE-BE method is described in detail.
The widespread use of thin shell structures has created a need for a systematic method of analysis which can adequately account for arbitrary geometric form. Therefore, the stress analysis of thin shell has been one of the more challenging areas of structural mechanics. The analysis of axisymmetric spherical shell is almost an every day occurrence in many industrial applications. A reliable and accurate finite element analysis procedure for such structures was needed. In general, the shell structures designed according to quasi-static analysis may fail under conditions of dynamic loading. For a more realistic prediction on the load carrying capacity of these shell, in addition to the dynamic effect, consideration should also include other factors such as nonlinearities in both material and geometry since these factors, in different manner, may also affect the magnitude of this capacity. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics of spherical Shell. For these purpose, the spherical shell subjected to uniformly distributed step load was analyzed for its large displacements elasto-viscoplastic dynamic response. The results for the dynamic characteristics of spherical shell in the cases under various conditions of base-radius/central height(a/H) and thickness/shell radius(t/R) were summarized as follows: 1. The dynamic characteristics with a/H, 1) As the a/H increases, the amplitude of displacement increased. 2) The values of displacement Dynamic Magnification Factor (DMF) range from 2.9 to 6.3 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell range from 1.8 to 2.6. 3) As the a/H increases, the values of DMF in the crown of shell is decreased rapidly but the values of DMF in mid-point of shell is increased gradually. 4) The values of DMF of hoop-stresses range from 3.6 to 6.8 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell range from 2.3 to 2.6, the values of DMF of stress were larger than that of displacement. 2. The dynamic characteristics with t/R, 1) With the decrease of thickness of shell decreses, the amplitude of the displacement and the period increased. 2) The values of DMF of the displacement were range from 2.8 to 3.6 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell were range from 2.1 to 2.2.
The widespread use of thin shell structures has created a need for a systematic method of analysis which can adequately account for arbitrary geometric form and boundary conditions as well as arbitrary general type of loading. Therefore, the stress and analysis of thin shell has been one of the more challenging areas of structural mechanics. A wide variety of numerical methods have been applied to the governing differential equations for spherical and cylindrical structures with a few results applicable to practice. The analysis of axisymmetric spherical shell is almost an every day occurrence in many industrial applications. A reliable and accurate finite element analysis procedure for such structures was needed. Dynamic loading of structures often causes excursions of stresses well into the inelastic range and the influence of geometry changes on the response is also significant in many cases. Therefore both material and geometric nonlinear effects should be considered. For these purposes, the spherical shell subjected to uniformly distributed step load was analyzed for its large displacements elasto-viscoplastic static and dynamic response. Geometrically nonlinear behaviour is taken into account using a Total Lagrangian formulation and the material behaviour is assumed to elasto-viscoplastic model highly corresponding to the real behaviour of the material. The results for the dynamic characteristics of spherical shell in the cases under various conditions of base-radius/central height(a/H) and thickness/shell radius(t/R) were summarized as follows : The dynamic characteristics with a/H. 1) AS the a/H increases, the amplitude of displacement in creased. 2) The values of displacement dynamic magnification factor (DMF) were ranges from 2.9 to 6.3 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell were ranged from 1.8 to 2.6. 3) As the a/H increases, the values of DMF in the crown of shell is decreased rapidly but the values of DMF in mid-point shell is increased gradually. 4) The values of DMF of hoop-stresses were range from 3.6 to 6.8 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell were ranged from 2.3 to 2.6, and the values of DMF of stress were larger than that of displacement. The dynamic characteristics with t/R. 5) With the thickness of shell decreases, the amplitude of the displacement and the period increased. 6) The values of DMF of the displacement were ranged from 2.8 to 3.6 in the crown of shell and the values of factor in the mid-point of shell were ranged from 2.1 to 2.2.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flexible structure of parabolic shell using photostrictive actuators. The analysis is made to know its dynamic behavior and light-induced control forces for coupled parabolic shell. The effects of an actuator location as well as membrane and bending components under the control action have been analyzed considering the approximate spherical model. The parabolic membrane shell accuracy is being mathematically approximated and validated comparing the light induced control forces using approximate equivalent spherical shell model. The parabolic shell with kapton smart material and photostrictive actuators has been used to formulate the governing equation in the transverse direction. The Kirchhoff-Love assumptions are used to obtain the governing equation of shell with actuator. The mechanical membrane forces and bending moments for parabolic thin shell with actuator is used to analyze the dynamic effect. The results show that membrane control action is much more significant than bending control action. Photostrictive actuators oriented along circumferential direction (actuator-2) can give better control effect than actuators placed along longitudinal direction (actuator-1). The slight difference is observed between spherical and parabolic shell for a surface with focal length to the diameter ratio of 1.00 or more than unity. Space applications often have the shape of parabolical shells or shell of revolution, due to their required focusing, aiming, or reflecting performance. The present approach is focused that photostrictive actuators can effectively control the vibration of parabolical membrane shell. Also, the actuator's location plays an important role in defining the control force.
Spherical reticulated shells are widely applied in structural engineering due to their good bearing capability and attractive appearance. Parametric modeling of spherical reticulated shells is the basis of internal analysis and optimization design. In the present study, generation methods of nodes and the corresponding connection methods of rod elements are proposed. Modeling programs are compiled by adopting the ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). A shape optimization method based on the two-stage algorithm is presented, and the corresponding optimization program is compiled in FORTRAN environment. Shape optimization is carried out based on the objective function of the minimum total steel consumption and the restriction condition of strength, stiffness, slenderness ratio, stability. The shape optimization of four typical Schwedler spherical reticulated shells is calculated with the span of 30 m~80 m and rise to span ratio of 1/7~1/2. Compared with the shape optimization results, the variation rules of total steel consumption along with the span and rise to span ratio are discussed. The results show that: (1) The left and right rod-Schwedler spherical reticulated shell is the most optimized and should be preferentially adopted in structural engineering. (2) The left diagonal rod-Schwedler spherical reticulated shell is second only to left and right rod regarding the mechanical behavior and optimized results. It can be applied to medium and small-span structures. (3) Double slash rod-Schwedler spherical reticulated shell is advantageous in mechanical behavior but with the largest total weight. Thus, this type can be used in large-span structures as far as possible. (4) The mechanical performance of no latitudinal rod-Schwedler spherical reticulated shell is the worst and with the second largest weight. Thus, this spherical reticulated shell should not be adopted generally in engineering.
This paper deals with nonlinear asymmetric dynamic buckling of clamped laminated angle-ply composite spherical shells under suddenly applied pressure loads. The formulation is based on first-order shear deformation theory and Lagrange's equation of motion. The nonlinearity due to finite deformation of the shell considering von Karman's assumptions is included in the formulation. The buckling loads are obtained through dynamic response history using Newmark's numerical integration scheme coupled with a Newton-Raphson iteration technique. An axisymmetric curved shell element is used to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the spherical caps. The pressure value beyond which the maximum average displacement response shows significant growth rate in the time history of the shell structure is considered as critical dynamic load. Detailed numerical results are presented to highlight the influence of ply-angle, shell geometric parameter and asymmetric mode on the critical load of spherical caps.
The main objective of this paper is to develop the finite element study on the nonlinear free vibration of functionally graded nanocomposite spherical shells reinforced with graphene platelets under the first-order shear deformation shell theory and von Kármán nonlinear kinematic relations. The governing equations are presented by introducing the full asymmetric nonlinear strain-displacement relations followed by the constitutive relations and energy functional. The extended Halpin-Tsai model is utilized to specify the overall Young's modulus of the nanocomposite. Then, the finite element formulation is derived and the quadrilateral 8-node shell element is implemented for finite element discretization. The nonlinear sets of dynamic equations are solved by the use of the harmonic balance technique and iterative method to find the nonlinear frequency response. Several numerical examples are represented to highlight the impact of involved factors on the large-amplitude vibration responses of nanocomposite spherical shells. One of the main findings is that for some geometrical and material parameters, the fundamental vibrational mode shape is asymmetric and the axisymmetric formulation cannot be appropriately employed to model the nonlinear dynamic behavior of nanocomposite spherical shells.
Researches on spherical shell which is most usually applied have been completed by many investigators already and generalized numerical formula was derived. But the existent researches are limited to those on spherical shell with isotropic or orthotropic roof stiffness, periodic distribution of roof stiffness that can be caused by spherical and latticed roof system is not considered. Therefore, the object of this study is to develop a structural analysis program to analyze spherical shells that have periodicity of roof stiffness distribution caused by latticed roof of large space structure, grasp buckling characteristics and behavior of structure.
