  • A spherical $Sr_4Al_{14}O_{25}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor for use in white-light-emitting diodes was synthesized using a liquid-state reaction with two precipitation stages. For the formation of phosphor from a precursor, the calcination temperature was $1,100^{\circ}C$. The particle morphology of the phosphor was changed by controlling the processing conditions. The synthesized phosphor particles were spherical with a narrow size-distribution and had mono-dispersity. Upon excitation at 395 nm, the phosphor exhibited an emission band centered at 497 nm, corresponding to the $4f^65d{\rightarrow}4f^7$ electronic transitions of $Eu^{2+}$. The critical quenching-concentration of $Eu^{2+}$ in the synthesized $Sr_4Al_{14}O_{25}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was 5 mol%. A phosphor-converted LED was fabricated by the combination of the optimized spherical phosphor and a near-UV 390 nm LED chip. When this pc-LED was operated under various forward-bias currents at room temperature, the pc-LED exhibited a bright blue-green emission band, and high color-stability against changes in input power. Accordingly, the prepared spherical phosphor appears to be an excellent candidate for white LED applications.

  • The different between two potential voltages can cause the electric field. The electric field is normally distributed along the radius of electrode, and hence it depends on the shape of electrodes. This paper analyses the distribution factor of electric field of symmetrical and asymmetrical concentric electrodes by using Finite Element technique. This allows an analysis the optimum safety clearance distance between two concentric electrodes. The symmetrical concentric electrode refers to Spherical-Spherical concentric electrodes and Cylindrical-Cylindrical concentric electrodes. It must be noted that the symmetrical electrodes are mostly applied for Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) equipments. The asymmetrical electrodes mention to Spherical (inner)-Cylindrical (outer) concentric electrodes and Cylindrical-Cube concentric electrodes, which present as the connection point of High Voltage (HV) cable. The simulations is also complies with the existing standards and regulations in order to ensure the accurate results.

  • Numerous studies of the dynamic behavior of powders have been performed by Discrete Element Method (DEM). The behavior of powders can be analyzed using the DEM assuming that the powder is composed of spherical particles. Moreover, the assumption of spherical particle reduces the computing time significantly. However, the biggest problem with this assumption is the real shape of the particles. Some types of particles, such as calcium carbonate and colloidal copper, are needle shaped. Thus, analysis based on spherical particles can produce errors because of the incorrect assumption. In this research, we developed a new model to simulate needle-shaped particles using the DEM. In the model, a series of particles are connected and regarded as a rod. There is no relative motion among the particles. Thus, the behavior of the rod is rigid motion. To validate the developed model, we carried out the drop-and-bounce test with different initial angles. The results showed negligible error of less than 2%.

  • Ichthyophonus disease broke out among rainbow trout (Salmon gairdneri) fry in November 1979, and after that a fish group containing diseased fish was kept for one year. The authors examined histopathologically the diseased fish 3 times, at 6 momths intervals. Diseased fish showed markedly stunted growth and darkish coloration, and anatomically the liver with small white nodules, the heart with red nodules, the spleen with granular nodules and the markedly tumefied kidney. Ichthyophonus invaded various tissues in the host and took the shape of multinucleate spherical or hyphal body. The multinucleate-spherical bodies contained many nuclei with a large nucleolus and granular cytoplasm. Histopathologically systemic dissemination and systemic proliferation by Ichthyophonus sp. wire indentified. In addition to a single multinucleate-spherical body appeared in the various tissue, large granulomas containing two to several generations of Ichthyophonus sp. were formed especially in the liver, kidey and spleen. The inflammatory response against Ichthyophonus was characterized by mononuclear-celluar proliferation with giant cell formation and fibrobasts proliferation.

  • We report the laser-induced formation of peanut-shaped gold nanoparticles (Au nanopeanuts) and gold nanowires (AuNWs), and their morphological properties. Pulsed laser irradiation of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles at 532 nm induces fragmentation, spherical growth, the formation of Au nanopeanuts, and the formation of AuNWs, sequentially. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the Au nanopeanuts are formed by instantaneous fusion of spherical nanoparticles in random orientation by laser heating. Furthermore, Au nanopeanuts are bridged in a linear direction to form AuNWs by an amorphous accumulation of gold atoms in the junction. The laser-produced Au nanopeanuts and AuNWs slowly disintegrate, restoring the spherical shape of the original Au nanoparticles when the laser irradiation is stopped. The addition of citrate effectively prevents them from transforming back to the nanospheres.

  • Bismuth telluride ($Bi_2Te_3$) and its alloys are well-known thermoelectric materials for ambient temperature applications. In this study, the dissolved Bi-Te precursor solution was used to synthesis metallic $Bi_2Te_3$ powder via ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and reduction process. The droplets of the Bi-Te precursor solution were decomposed to Bi-Te oxide powders by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The spherical $Bi_2Te_3$ powders were synthesized by reduction reaction in atmosphere of hydrogen gas at the temperature above $375^{\circ}C$ for 6h. The reduced $Bi_2Te_3$ powders have a mean particle size of $1.5{\mu}m$. The crystal structure of the powder was evaluated by X-Ray diffraction(XRD), and the microstructure with size and shape powders was observed by fieldemission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscope(TEM).

  • Many natural proteins self-assemble in complex ways, either to fulfill their biological function or introduce particular properties, such as high strength and toughness. We report the morphological transition in water from a spherical to rod-like shape of Bombyx mori silk fibroin by reducing the pH. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering were used to characterize the dilute solutions of silk fibroin in an aqueous environment, and provide direct visualization of the transformation of spherical micelles at pH 6.8 to nanofibrils at pH 4.8. This change in morphology occurred as a result of the stretching entropy due to the formation of $\beta$-sheets, which was analyzed using circular dichroism spectroscopy. This study demonstrates the self-assembly of silk fibroin as a function of pH.

  • Powder quality, including high flowability and spherical shape, determines the properties of additively manufactured products. Therefore, the cheap production of high-quality powders is critical in additive manufacturing. Radio frequency plasma treatment is an effective method to fabricate spherical powders by melting the surface of irregularly shaped powders; in the present work, mechanically milled Zr powders are spheroidized by radio frequency plasma treatment and their properties are compared with those of commercial Zircaloy-2 alloy powder. Spherical Zr particles are successfully fabricated by plasma treatment, although their flowability and impurity contents are poorer than those of the commercial Zircaloy-2 alloy powder. This result shows that radio-frequency plasma treatment with mechanically milled powders requires further research and development for manufacturing low-cost powders for additive manufacturing.

  • YAG phosphor powders were fabricated by the atmospheric plasma spraying method with the spray-dried spherical YAG precursor. The YAG precursor slurry for the spray drying process was prepared by the PVA solution chemical processing utilizing a domestic easy-sintered aluminum oxide (Al2O3) powder as a seed. The homogenous and viscous slurry resulted in dense granules, not hollow or porous particles. The synthesized phosphor powders demonstrated a stable YAG phase, and excellent fluorescence properties of approximately 115% compared with commercial YAG:Ce3+ powder. The microstructure of the phosphor powder had a perfect spherical shape and an average particle size of approx imately 30 ㎛. As a result of the PKG test of the YAG phosphor powder, the synthesized phosphor powders exhibited an outstanding luminous intensity, and a peak wavelength was observed at 531 nm.

  • To understand the structure of molecules, various computational methodologies have been extensively investigated such as the Voronoi diagram of the centers of atoms in molecule and the power diagram for the weighted points where the weights are related to the radii of the atoms. For a more improved efficiency, constructs like an $\alpha$-shape or a weighted $\alpha$-shape have been developed and used frequently in a systematic analysis of the morphology of molecules. However, it has been recently shown that $\alpha$-shapes and weighted $\alpha$-shapes lack the fidelity to Euclidean distance for molecules with polysized spherical atoms. We present the theory as well as algorithms of $\beta$-shape and $\beta$-complex in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which reflects the size difference among atoms in their full Euclidean metric. We show that these new concepts are more natural for most applications and therefore will have a significant impact on applications based on particles, in particular in molecular biology. The theory will be equivalently useful for other application areas such as computer graphics, geometric modeling, chemistry, physics, and material science.
