  • A numerical solution is presented for the natural convection heat transfer from two vertical fins using a spectral finite difference method. Virtual distant boundary conditions for two bodies that are compatible with plume behavior and with an overall continuity condition are introduced. A boundary-fitted coordinate system is formed. Streamlines, isotherms, mean Nusselt numbers and drag & lift coefficients are presented for a variety of dimensionless parameters such as a Grashof number and a Prandtl number at a steady-state. Extensive effectiveness of a spectral finite difference method was established.

  • This paper describes a robust speech recognition technique by reconstructing spectral components mismatched with a training environment. Although the cluster-based reconstruction method can compensate the unreliable components from reliable components in the same spectral vector by assuming an independent, identically distributed Gaussian-mixture process of training spectral vectors, the presented method exploits the temporal dependency of speech to reconstruct the components by introducing a hidden-Markov-model prior which incorporates an internal state transition plausible for an observed spectral vector sequence. The experimental results indicate that the described method can provide temporally consistent reconstruction and further improve recognition performance on average compared to the conventional method.

  • Present study explains some experimental results on the aerodynamic noise of the cross-flow fan usually installed in the indoor unit of the room air-conditioners and provides a simple reduction method of radiating sound to decrease the total noise level. The spectra of the noise of the cross-flow fan were analyzed by the spectral decomposition method to characterize the generated sound. The unsteady fluctuating flow field was also measured using the I-type hot-wire probe. Comparing the spectral characteristics of the sound and the flow velocity, a useful noise reduction method was proposed, which bounds the region with a fence where the flow fluctuations were noticeably changed in the same fashion as the source spectral distribution functions vary. To validate the proposed method for reducing noise generated by the cross-flow fan, the sound pressure levels of the cross-flow fan system were compared with and without the bounding fence for various flow rates.

  • A new implicit discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method (DGSEM) based on the first order hyperbolic system(FOHS) is presented for solving elliptic type partial different equations, such as the Poisson problems. By utilizing the idea of hyperbolic formulation of Nishikawa[1], the original Poisson equation was reformulated in the first-order hyperbolic system. Such hyperbolic system is solved implicitly by the collocation type DGSEM. The steady state solution in pseudo-time, which is the solution of the original Poisson problem, was obtained by the implicit solution of the global linear system. The optimal polynomial orders of 𝒪(𝒽𝑝+1)) are obtained for both the solution and gradient variables from the test cases in 1D and 2D regular grids. Spectral accuracy of the solution and gradient variables are confirmed from all test cases of using the uniform grids in 2D.

  • Microstrip patch antennas are analyzed by a multiresolution wavelet method. The spectral Green's dyad of the structure is obtained and its joint spatial-spectral domain representations are presented. Based on the joint spatial-spectral domain representation, we show that the spectral-domain wavelets are useful in the analysis of this problem. We obtain the matrix equations of the integral equations of this Green's dyad by using the method of moment(MoM), and efficiently solve the problem using the spectral domain wavelet transform concepts in conjuction with the conjugate gradient method. The results for a single-layered square patch are compared with those of conventional MoM and CG-FFT.

  • In this study, plastic detection technique was developed, applying remote sensing technology as a method to extract plastic wastes, which is one of the big causes of concern contributing to environmental destruction. It is possible to extract areas where plastic (including polypropylene and polyethylene) wastes are prominent, using ASTER data by taking advantage of its absorptive characteristics of ASTER/SWIR bands. The algorithm is applicable to define large industrial wastes disposal sites and areas where plastic greenhouses are concentrated. However, the detection technique with ASTER/SWIR data has some research tasks to be tackled, which includes a partial secretion of reference spectral, depending on some conditions of plastic wastes and a detection error in a region mixed with vegetations and waters. Following results were obtained after making comparisons between several detection methods and plastic wastes in different conditions; (a)'spectral extraction method' was suitable for areas where plastic wastes exist separated from other objects, such as coastal areas where plastic wastes drifted ashore. (single plastic spectral was used as a reference for the 'spectral extraction method') (b)On the other hand, the 'spectral extraction method' was not suitable for sites where plastic wastes are mixed with vegetation and soil. After making comparison of the processing results of a mixed area, it was found that applying both 'separation method' using un-mixing and ‘spectral extraction method’ with NDVI masked is the most appropriate method to extract plastic wastes. Also, we have investigated the possibility of reducing the influence of vegetation and water, using ASTER/TIR, and successfully extracted some places with plastics. As a conclusion, we have summarized the relationship between detection techniques and conditions of plastic wastes and propose the practical application of remote sensing technology to the extraction of plastic wastes.

  • The studies to estimate the surface spectral reflectance of an object have received widespread attention using the multi-spectral camera system. However, the multi-spectral camera system requires the additional color filter according to increment of the channel and system complexity is increased by multiple capture. Thus, this paper proposes an algorithm to reduce the estimation error of surface spectral reflectance with the conventional 3-band RGB camera. In the proposed method, adaptive principal components for each pixel are calculated by renewing the population of surface reflectances and the adaptive principal components can reduce estimation error of surface spectral reflectance of current pixel. To evaluate performance of the proposed estimation method, 3-band principal component analysis, 5-band wiener estimation method, and the proposed method are compared in the estimation experiment with the Macbeth Color Checker. As a result, the proposed method showed a lower mean square error between the estimated and the measured spectra compared to the conventional 3-band principal component analysis method and represented a similar or advanced estimation performance compared to the 5-band wiener method.

  • Tri-stimulus values of CIE-XYZ and RGB values obtained by photographic film, CCD camera or scanner depend on the spectral sensitivity of imaging devices and the spectral radiant distribution of the illumination. It is important to record and reproduce the reflectance spectra of the object for true device independent color reproduction and high accurate recording of the scene. In this paper, a method to record the reflection spectra of the object is introduced and its application to spectral endoscopes is presented.

  • An infrared imaging method is proposed in which direct measurement of the spectral response of CCD sensors can be achieved through digital image processing. This method allows for a simple and economic method to detect the spectral sensitivity of commercialized CCD sensors. The key components of the apparatus are a monochromator, CCD-sample supporter and a personal computer equipped with a digital image processing systems. Tentative experimentation conducted on the commercialized CCD camera has resulted in a fairly consistent agreement with the theoretical model.
