This paper investigates the effect of absorption loss by a human body to the received signal strength with respect to on-body transmitting antenna positions in on-to-off wireless body area networks. This investigation is based on measurement results obtained from experiments performed on human bodies (male and female) using planar inverted-F antennas in an anechoic chamber. The total absorption loss by the human body is also presented through the SEMCAD-X simulations. Our investigation showed that the received signal strength becomes lower when the transmitting antenna is mounted at a specific position where more absorption loss is experienced. The statistical analyses of on-to-off body channel characteristics based on the measurement results are presented.
This study was carried out to analyze the relationship between basic physical properties and acoustical characteristics of imported violin wood and to offer the information on raw material procurement and incoming-material quality control to domestic violin makers which have purchased most raw materials from European exporting countries at high expense. Equilibrium moisture content of European spruce with lower specific gravity after the prolonged storage was rather higher than that of European maple with higher specific gravity. The specific gravity of spruce increased with decreasing annual ring width, however, that of narrower annual ring. Increasement in specific gravity enhanced the dynamic Young's modulus of both wood species, but influenced the vibration energy loss by internal friction differently between two species. For dynamic MOE, qurater-sawn spruce was higher than the flat-sawn, but maple showed the reverse directional characteristics. Consequently, it would be well for violin makers to establish the standard for materials and quality control system to assure the quality of their violin products.
This study was designed to observe the effect of the amount of egg and the specific gravity on the quality of sponge cake. There was a little difference of the moisture content by the specific gravity when the amount of egg was same. However, as the amount of egg was increased at the same specific gravity, the moisture content and baking loss was significantly increased(p<0.05). At 100% of egg amount, the largest specific loaf volume was gained at 0.55 of specific gravity, in the same way 150% at 0.45, 200% at 0.35, 250% at 0.45, The hardness of sponge cake was increased as the specific gravity was increased at the same amount of egg(p<0.05). The specific gravity which the lowest hardness was gained was 0.55 with 100% of the amount of egg, in th same way 0.45 with 150%, 0.35 with 200%. As the period of storage was longer, the increase of hardness was increased as the specific gravity went up at the same amount of egg(p<0.05). Therefore, in the case of sugar content 166%, the specific gravity with maximum specific loaf volume and minimum hardness was gained 0.55 at the amount of egg 100%, 0.45 at 150%, 0.35 at 200% and 0.35 at 250%.
There have been a lot of approaches to evaluate and predict transmission control protocol (TCP) performance in a numerical way. Especially, under the recent advance in wireless transmission technology, the issue of TCP performance over wireless links has come to surface. It is because TCP responds to all packet losses by invoking congestion control and avoidance algorithms, resulting in degraded end-to-end performance in wireless and lossy systems. By several previous works, although it has been already proved that overall TCP performance is largely dependent on its loss recovery performance, there have been few works to try to analyze TCP loss recovery performance with thoroughness. In this paper, therefore, we focus on analyzing TCP's loss recovery performance and have developed a simple model that facilitates to capture the TCP sender's behaviors during loss recovery period. Based on the developed model, we can derive the conditions that packet losses may be recovered without retransmission timeout (RTO). Especially, we have found that TCP Reno can retransmit three packet losses by fast retransmits in a specific situation. In addition, we have proved that successive three packet losses and more than four packet losses in a window always invoke RTO easily, which is not considered or approximated in the previous works. Through probabilistic works with the conditions derived, the loss recovery performance of TCP Reno can be quantified in terms of the number of packet losses in a window.
Purpose: The main theme of this study is to derive a specific quality loss function with multiple characteristics according to the same analytical structure as the single characteristic quality loss function of Taguchi. In other words, it presents an analytical framework for measuring quality costs that can be controlled in practice. Methods: This study followed the analytical methodology through geometric, linear algebraic, and statistical approaches Results: The function suggested by this study is as follows; $$L(x_1,x_2,{\cdots},x_t)={\sum\limits_{i=1}^{t}}k_i\{x_i+{\sum\limits_{j=1}^{t}}\({\rho}_{ij}{\frac{d_i}{d_j}}\)x_j\}x_i$$ Conclusion: This paper derived the quality loss function with multiple quality characteristics to expand the usefulness of the Taguchi quality loss function. The function derived in this paper would be more meaningful to estimate quality costs under the practical situation and general structure with multiple quality characteristics than the function by linear algebraic approach in response surface analysis.

Seismic risk assessment studies are one of the most crucial instruments for mitigating casualties and economic losses. This work utilizes fragility curves to evaluate the seismic risk of single-story precast buildings, which are generally favored in Marmara's organized industrial zones. First, the precast building stock in the region has been categorized into nine sub-classes. Then, seven locations in the Marmara region with a high concentration of industrial activities are considered. Probabilistic seismic hazard assessments were conducted for both the soil-dependent and soil-independent scenarios. Subsequently, damage analysis was performed based on the structural capacity and mean fragility curves. Considering four different consequence models, 630 sub-class-specific loss curves for buildings were obtained. In the current study, it has been determined that the consequence model has a significant impact on the loss curves, hence, average loss curves were computed for each case investigated. In light of the acquired results, it was found that the loss ratio values obtained at different locations within the same region show significant variation. In addition, it was observed that the structural damage states change from serviceable to repairable or repairable to unrepairable. Within the scope of the study, 126 average loss functions were presented that could be easily used by non-experts in earthquake engineering, regardless of structural analysis. These functions, which offer loss ratios for varying hazard levels, are valuable outputs that allow preliminary risk assessment in the region and yield sensible outcomes for insurance activities.
Temperate rocky reefs dominated by the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, support diverse assemblages of benthic macroalgae that provide a suite of ecosystem services, including high rates of primary production in aquatic ecosystems. These forests and the benthic macroalgae that inhabit them are facing both short-term losses and long-term declines throughout much of their range in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Here, we quantified patterns of benthic macroalgal biomass and irradiance on rocky reefs that had intact kelp forests and nearby reefs where the benthic macroalgae had been lost due to deforestation at three sites along the California, USA and Baja California, MEX coasts during the springs and summers of 2017 and 2018. We then modeled how the loss of macroalgae from these reefs impacted net benthic productivity using species-specific, mass-dependent rates of photosynthesis and respiration that we measured in the laboratory. Our results show that the macroalgal assemblages at these sites were dominated by a few species of stipitate kelps and fleshy red algae whose relative abundances were spatially and temporally variable, and which exhibited variable rates of photosynthesis and respiration. Together, our model estimates that the dominant macroalgae on these reefs contribute 15 to 4,300 mg C m-2 d-1 to net benthic primary production, and that this is driven primarily by a few dominant taxa that have large biomasses and high rates of photosynthesis and / or respiration. Consequently, we propose that the loss of these macroalgae results in the loss of an important contribution to primary production and overall ecosystem function.
A model equation to describe the plasmid instability in recombinant Escherichia coli fermentation is proposed. The equation allows one to estimate easily the two model parameters; (1) the difference in the specific growth rates between plasmid-free cells and plasmid-harboring cells ($\delta$), and (2) the probability of plasmid loss by plasmid-harboring cells ($\rho$). The estimated values of $\delta and \rho$ were in the range of 0.02-0.07 and $10^{-3}-10^{-5}$, respectively, and were strongly dependent on the dilution rate. As another parameter, the ratio of specific growth rates of plasmid-free cells and plasmid-harboring cells ($\alha$) was calculated and the result showed the highest value of 1.28 at the lowest dilution rate of 0.075 $hr^{-l}$, examined in this work. By the sensitivity analyses on the estimates of $\delta and \rho$, it was found that the growth rate difference ($\delta$) affected the plasmid instability more seriously than the probability of plasmid loss ($\rho$). Furthermore, the profound instability of plasmid at low dilution rate could be explained by the high values of $\alpha and \rho$.
Parametric cycle analysis of a dual-spool, mixed exhaust turbofan engine with turbine blade cooling were described to investigate the effect of turbine blade cooling on the engine performance such as specific thrust and thrust specific fuel consumption. Coolant of low pressure turbine triggers high engine performance loss and cooling effect loss in high pressure turbine. Therefore low pressure turbine coolant should be much more considered for effective design.
The purpose of the thesis is to develop simulation program for forecasting of optical connector. So we can achieve the time and the money saving for making the optical connector. Optical performance (insertion loss) of optical connector mainly relies on 3 misalignment factors-ferrule factor due to mis-manufacture from design, auto-centering effect that is fiber behavior phenomena between hole and fiber, fiber misalignment factor. Simulation use experimental data with auto-centering effect and fiber factor and use pseudo data with ferrule through random number generation because it is developing stage. In this study we a, pp.y kernel density estimation method with experimental data in order to know whether it belong to or not specific parametric distribution family. And we simulate to forecast insertion loss of optical multifiber connector under specific design model using nonparametric bootstrap resampling data and parametric pseudo samples from uniform distribution. We obtain the tolerance specifications of misalignment factors satisfying not exceed in maximum 1.0dB and choose optimal hole diameter.
