Augmented Reality technologies offer new possibilities to the exploration of spatial distributed information. In this work we describe the main issues in the development of an Augmented Reality system that allows the annotation of objects or features in the real world captured by a camera. The general operation of this kind of systems is described, as well as the main problems that need to be solved. Finally, as an example of case of study, we present an application for the annotation of information relative to containers in a marine terminal.
Sports climbing requires repeated movements within a limited space, which may cause climbers to lose their constant interest in it. Furthermore, it is important that coaches should give lessons focusing on demonstrations to make sure that learners can understand the movements on their own, However, in traditional sports climbing lessons, they give instructions on almost every movement of learners' hands and feet. Hence, there have been constant calls for replacing these existing sports climbing lessons and presenting new methods to ensure that learners can observe their coaches' demonstrations in real time and emulate them. An introduction of the image training using spatial augmented reality techniques to solve these problems may have a positive effect on the improvement of learners' motor skills and attitudes toward lessons. This study aims to verify the effectiveness of the Climbing Character Animation (CCA) as a learning tool for sports climbing. To achieve this research objective, it applied it to actual sports climbing to verify its utility. As a result, it was shown that the lessons using spatial augmented reality-based CCA had a higher effectiveness than traditional sports climbing lessons in the degree of interest inducement, emersion and learning effects.
Due to economical or technological reasons. humans are responsible for inspection functions in many cases. Humans. however. are rarely perfect. thus allowing non-confirming parts to be processed. As the attributes of interest or the variety of products increases. the inspection system becomes less effective because of the sensory and cognitive limitations of human inspectors. Any means that can support or aid the human inspectors is necessary to compensate for inspection difficulty. Augmented reality (AR) offers a new approach in designing an inspection system as a means to augment the cognitive capability of inspectors by providing the 3D spatial proximity between two information channels. The experimental results suggest that AR might be an effective tool that reduces inspection time without sacrificing the measuring accuracy.

This paper proposes a educational content display system based on spatial augmented reality with a multi-touch screen for effective learning with intuitive interaction. It is hardly expected that the existing display systems have major learning effects because the user-system interaction can only be achieved through buttons or switches, In contrast, the system proposed by this paper ensures more effective interaction through the user's movement, not through buttons or switches. This system uses a spatial augmented reality method to display images, thereby attracting the users' attention. In addition, it ensures the effective dissemination of information by providing visual images that are more realistic.
We propose a data-driven kinematic control method for a robotic spatial augmented reality (RSAR) system. We assume a scenario where a robotic device and a projector-camera unit (PCU) are assembled in an ad hoc manner with loose kinematic specifications, which hinders the application of a conventional kinematic control method based on the exact link and joint specifications. In the proposed method, the kinematic relation between a PCU and joints is represented as a set of B-spline surfaces based on sample data rather than analytic or differential equations. The sampling process, which automatically records the values of joint angles and the corresponding external parameters of a PCU, is performed as an off-line process when an RSAR system is installed. In an on-line process, an external parameter of a PCU at a certain joint configuration, which is directly readable from motors, can be computed by evaluating the pre-built B-spline surfaces. We provide details of the proposed method and validate the model through a comparison with an analytic RSAR model with synthetic noises to simulate assembly errors.

Recently car navigation systems which have been widely spread and evolved. The systems use various information and techniques such as real time traffic information and augmented reality technique. In order to provide a shortest path with good flow, real-time traffic information provided by DMB is required. Augmented reality technique is also introduced to give a reality to driver by displaying real images captured by camera during driving. However, these operate well when the system receives GPS data normally. Exact information about the positions of vehicles is a base that supports the above function with realities. This paper proposes a model for acquiring exact position of vehicles. When the GPS does not operate normally, the proposed model uses various data which are generated by integrated vehicle networks.

Indoor localization is one of the basic elements of Location-Based Service, such as indoor navigation, location-based precision marketing, spatial recognition of robotics, augmented reality, and mixed reality. We propose a Voxel Labeling-based visual positioning system using object simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Our method is a method of determining a location through single image 3D cuboid object detection and object SLAM for indoor navigation, then mapping to create an indoor map, addressing it with voxels, and matching with a defined space. First, high-quality cuboids are created from sampling 2D bounding boxes and vanishing points for single image object detection. And after jointly optimizing the poses of cameras, objects, and points, it is a Visual Positioning System (VPS) through matching with the pose information of the object in the voxel database. Our method provided the spatial information needed to the user with improved location accuracy and direction estimation.
Recently, realistic contents such as virtual reality(VR) and augmented reality (AR) are widely used for education to provide beneficial learning environments with thee-dimensional(3D) information and interactive technology. Specially, AR technology will be helpful to intuitively understand by adding virtual objects registered in the real learning environment with effective ways. In this paper, we developed an AR learning system using 3D spatial information in the 2D based textbook for studying math related to geometry. In order to increase spatial learning effect, we applied to solid shapes such as prisms and pyramids in mathematics education process. Also, it allows participants to use various shapes and expression methods (e.g., wireframe mode) with interaction. We conducted the experiment with our AR system, evaluated achievement and interest. Our experimental study showed positive results, our results are expected to provide effective learning methods in various classes through realistic visualization and interaction methods.
Reconstruction of the three-dimensional (3D) environment is a key aspect of augmented reality and augmented virtuality, which utilize and incorporate a user's surroundings. Such reconstruction can be easily realized by employing a Kinect device. However, multiple Kinect devices are required for enhancing the reconstruction density and for spatial expansion. While employing multiple Kinect devices, they must be calibrated with respect to each other in advance, and a marker is often used for this purpose. However, a marker needs to be placed at each calibration, and the result of marker detection significantly affects the calibration accuracy. Therefore, a user-friendly, efficient, accurate, and marker-less method for calibrating multiple Kinect devices is proposed in this study. The proposed method includes a joint tracking algorithm for approximate calibration, and the obtained result is further refined by applying the iterative closest point algorithm. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is a convenient alternative to conventional marker-based methods for calibrating multiple Kinect devices. Hence, the proposed method can be incorporated in various applications of augmented reality and augmented virtuality that require 3D environment reconstruction by employing multiple Kinect devices.
In these days, space design is evolving to the mixed reality space where fused on-line and off-line. But, standard and measure of mixed reality space has not been suggested and there has been little research about media environment and expression method as a mixed system either. That's why here I suggest four media environments and their characteristics that act not only as a critical point in the mixed reality space based on ubiquitous technology but also as a standard for spatial discerning. 1) Real space that is a media environment only seen by human visual and tactical sense is evolving using expression methods like new materials based on digital technology and LED. 2) Augmented reality space is a media environment using information instruments is expressed with diverse 2D and 3D contents. 3) Cyber Space is a environment depends totally on media instruments is produced by perfect graphic information without any spatial and physical limitations. 4) Augmented cyber space is realized only through the displays in cyber studio and is a space where real objects and graphic information are mixed. Depending on the purpose of the experience, media environment and expressional characteristics of mixed reality space can be fused, blended, and mixed, and that can be realized to the intelligent information space where one can experience without spatial, visual, informational limitations. In the future, studies on physical characteristics of contents according to the media environment characteristics are necessary.
