The purpose of this study is to characterize the hydrogeochemical characteristics of hot spring waters and to interpret the source of noble gases and the geochemical environment of the hot spring waters distributed along the eastern area of the Korean peninsula. For this purpose, We carried out the chemical, stable isotopic and noble gas isotopic analyses for eleven hot spring water and fourteen hot spring gas samples collected from six hot spring sites. The hot spring waters except the Osaek hot spring water show the pH range of 7.0 to 9.1. However, the Osaek $CO_2$-rich hot spring water shows a weak acid of pH 5.7. The temperature of hot spring waters in the study area ranges from $25.7^{\circ}C$ to $68.3^{\circ}C$. Electrical conductivity of hot spring waters varies widely from 202 to $7,130{\mu}S/cm$. High electrical conductivity (av., $3,890{\mu}S/sm$) by high Na and Cl contents of the Haeundae and the Dongrae hot spring waters indicates that the hot spring waters were mixed with seawater in the subsurface thermal system. The type of hot springs in the viewpoint of dissolved components can be grouped into three types: (1) alkaline Na-$HCO_3$ type including sulfur gas of the Osaek, Baekam, Dukgu and Chuksan hot springs, and (2) saline Na-Cl type of the Haeundae and Dongrae hot springs, and (3) weak acid $CO_2$-rich Na-$HCO_3$ type of Osaek hot spring. Tritium ratios of the Haeundae and the Dongrae hot springs indicate different residence time in their aquifers of older water of $0.0{\sim}0.3$ TU and younger water of $5.9{\sim}8.8$ TU. The ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ values of hot spring waters indicate that they originate from the meteoric water, and that the values also reflect a latitude effect according to their locations. $^3He/^4He$ ratios of the hot spring waters except Osaek $CO_2$-rich hot spring water range from $0.1{\times}10^{-6}$ to $1.1{\times}10^{-6}$ which are plotted above the mixing line between air and crustal components. It means that the He gas in hot spring waters was originated mainly from atmosphere and crust sources, and partly from mantle sources. The Osaek $CO_2$-rich hot spring water shows $3.3{\times}10^{-6}$ in $^3He/^4He$ ratio that is 2.4 times higher than those of atmosphere. It provides clearly a helium source from the deep mantle. $^{40}Ar/^{36}Ar$ ratios of hot spring water are in the range of an atmosphere source.
Application of steam distillation on the analysis of pesticide residue in soil, water and crops was studied using the nitrogen distillation apparatus. Most pesticides which were extracted by organic solvents could be analyzed by the steam distillation method. For instance, distillations of PCNB, ${\gamma}-BHC$, ${\alpha}-or$${\beta}-endosulfan$, IBP, diazinon, fenthion, fenitrothion, alachlor, butachlor, pretilachlor, metolachlor, pendimethalin, benthiocarb and molinate were possible, but not simazine, atrazine and nitrofen. The optimum volume of distillate for a sufficient extraction of pesticide varied according to kind of pesticide. In general, the volume needed was little for carbamate, but much more for organochlorine. When the definite amount of distillate was obtained and then the condenser was washed by acetone, the optimum volume of distillate was less. Using the steam distillation method, the amount of organic solvent needed for one extraction of pesticide from soil, water and vegetable was less than the conventional solvent extraction method, and the analytical procedure became simpler. The process of concentration and clean up was mostly unnecessary, although a ghost peak was apparent in the gas chromatogram according to the kind of materials distilled.
A soil bacterium, Bacillus subtilis HJ927, exhibiting strong antagonistic property against pathogenic fungi was isolated from pepper fields infested with Phytophthora capsici. Pepper plants inoculated with P. capsici revealed severe root mortality while plants co-inoculated with B. subtilis HJ927 and P. capsici showed drastically reduced root mortality. Low molecular weight substances released by B. subtilis HJ927 mediated the plant protective effect. The anti-fungal compounds released by B. subtilis HJ927 were identified as 3-methylbutyric acid, 2-methylbutyric acid, and methyl 2-hydroxy, 3-phenylpropanoate by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In addition to these compounds, B. subtilis HJ927 also produced ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase, a hydrolytic enzyme implicated in antifungal activity.
Generally, nitrogen (N) fertilization higher than the recommended dose is applied during vegetable cultivation for increasing in productivity. However, excessive N application rate beyond plant requirement could cause adverse environmental impact such as nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emission. In this experiment, the impacts of N fertilization was studied on nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission to standardize the optimum fertilization level for minimizing of $N_2O$ emission as well as most of the crop productivity. Herein, we assessed the $N_2O$ emission in the flat upland soil which was cultivated with different N application rates on red pepper for 3 years (2010~2012). $N_2O$ emission was measured in chemical N fertilizer amounts 0 (N 0), 95 (N 0.5), 190 (N 1.0), $380(N_2.0)kgha^{-1}$ by using the abnormal shape chamber closed repeating three times. In average for 3 years, the total $N_2O$ emissions of each treatment in field of soybean were 2.110 (N 0), 3.165 (N 0.5), 5.039 (N 1.0), and $7.228(N_2.0)kgN_2Oha^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively. And then the primary regression between nitrogen fertilizer amount and the total $N_2O$ emission was showed as y = 0.0138x + 2.0942 ($r^2=0.9885$), and an average of the emission factor was $EF_1$ 0.0148(0.0118~0.0191) $N_2O-NkgN^{-1}kg^{-1}$ from 2010 to 2012. The result was a little higher than the emission default of the IPCC 1996 Guideline ($EF_1$ 0.0125) when the results are converted into $N_2O$ emission factor.
Analytical methods for the determination of the derivatives of the herbicide (${\pm}$)-2-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)propionic acid (MCPP) by capillary column gas chromatography with mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and electron-capture detection (GC-ECD) were studied. A successful procedure was introduced for the ester preparation using $H_2SO_4$, as the catalyst and the alcohol 2,2,2-trichloroethanol (TCE) or 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE). The identificaiton and elucidation of MCPP by GC-MS spectrometry following the esterification with diazomethane, $BF_3$/methanol, $H_2SO_4$/methanol, TCE, TFE, or pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFB) were carried out. A comparison of the response-sensitivities among those MCPP esters was made with GC-ECD. Although the methylation product of MCPP was confirmed by GC-MS, its low sensitivity to the ECD limited the detection of MCPP. TCE, TFE, and PFB derivatization methods resulted in a high rate of MCPP esterifications and very sensitive ECD molecular responses. Based on efficiency, convenience, worker safety, and least sample contamination, TFE esterificaiton was considered as the superior method for MCPP analysis to the other methods of derivatization. An accurate method is described for quantifying MCPP in soil leachates by GC-ECD at very low concentrations without the requirement of a complicated clean-up process. As a result, MCPP residues at concentrations of less than $0.1{\mu}g$ in 100ml soil leachate were detected.

As part of the recycling methods, residual food through the anaerobic fermentation process was decomposed into methane gas and fermentation liquid. The research was conducted to measure the effect of application of fermentation liquid on chemical properties of soil and plant growth according to application rate and separate manure at the base of nitrogen in fermentation liquid. The fermentation liquid contained 0.52% nitrogen was applied in treatments by standard fertilizer. The treatments were composed of the control only with chemical fertilizer and N-50, N-100-4, N-100-8 were each of applied with 50, 100(6 times), 100(3 times)% of fermentation liquid contrast to standard fertilizer. Properties of fermentation liquid was high EC because of waster soluble organic compounds as well as much of salts and also contained a lot of suspended solid. The changes of soil chemical properties little occurred in before and after of experiment but EC and content of ex. Ca in soil were increased. Fresh weigh in treatments applied with fermentation is high than that of control but the difference between treatments little showed. The above result means if fermentation liquid be used instead of chemical fertilizer the volume of used fermentation liquid will be reduced by 50% of present standard fertilizer.

The gaseous product of nitrogen cycle, nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) is a potent greenhouse gas whose Global Warming Potential (GWP) is about 300 times greater than $CO_2$. The dynamics of $N_2O$ emission are controlled by such environments and soil conditions. The main aim of this study is to investigate variations of $N_2O$ emission and its controlling factors with different land-use patterns in Haean basin. A forest, a radish field and a rice paddy were selected as three different land-use patterns. Their $N_2O$ emissions were measured every month during a growing season. We also collected soil samples with seasons and analyzed soil characteristics including inorganic nitrogen content. $N_2O$ emission was greatest at the radish field likely due to anthropogenic nitrogen addition by fertilization. Soils of forest and rice paddy also contained inorganic nitrogen originated from organic matter. However, the spatial variation was great and it looks that nitrogen cycle and $N_2O$ production were slower than that of radish field. Intensive observation and control of fertilization would be requiredto adjust $N_2O$ emission from agriculture soils.

Solubility of oil contaminants in surfactant solutions plays an important role in selecting a suitable surfactant type for soil remediation. Solubility measurement procedures consist of making an equilibrium between surfactant solution and oil, solvent extraction using dichloromethane, and condensation for gas chromatography analysis. Solubility measurement requires time consumption and lots of materials. Interfacial tension is the contracting force between two immiscible liquids, surfactant solution and oil, and also closely related to solubility of oil. This study established a relationship between the interfacial tension and solubility of diesel fuel in surfactant solution and suggested a quick method to estimate solubility of oil in a surfactant solution by measuring its interfacial tension. The results of this study showed that the solubility of diesel fuel in surfactant solution was exponentially increased by decreasing the interfacial tension between two immiscible liquids. The solubility of diesel fuel was significantly increased under the interfacial tension conditions below 1 dyne/cm, while the solubility change was not apparent under the interfacial tension conditions beyond 5 dyne/cm. Interfacial tension measurements may allow us to quickly select an efficient surfactant and its concentration for soil remediation.

Crude oil-degrading microorganisms, Acinetobacter sp. A132, Pseudomonas aeruginosa F722, and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus OM1 were isolated from soil and sea. The optimal temperature of strain A132 and strain F722 on growth isolated from soil was $35^{\circ}C$ both, and also their growth were optimized at pH 8 and 9, respectively. The growth of the strains, A132 and F722, showed that crude oil of 2% (w/v) in culture broth in which crude oil was used as carbon and energy sources appeared to be an optimum. Optimal culture conditions of strain OM1 were different from those of the soil microorganisms except for temperature. The growth of strain OM1 was optimized at pH 7 and crude oil of 3.0% (w/v). The degradability to crude oil by strain A132 showed maximum $5.49g/\;l\;{\cdot}\;day$ under the conditions of $25^{\circ}C$, NaCl of 1.0% (w/v), and crude oil of 2.0% (w/v). The highest degradability of strain F722 to crude oil was $1.19g/\;l\;{\cdot}\;day$ under the culture conditions at $35^{\circ}C$, NaCl 1.0% (w/v), and crude oil of 2.0% (w/v). The degradation characteristics of kerosene $(nC_9-nC_{20})$ and diesel $(nC_9-nC_{28})$ by strain OM1, and F722 were analyzed by gas chromatography. Strain OM1 degraded more than 95% of kerosene and 75% of diesel for 7 days cultivation. Strain F722 showed degradation of more than 80% to kerosene in 10 days.
This study was conducted to detect lead which is exhausted with gas from running automobiles and is considered to accumulate in cropping lands. Soil samples were taken from uplands and paddy fields with different distance from highways. atonic absorption spectrophotometer was applied for analysis. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In the areas of Seoul toll gate and Jookjeon, Gyeonggi province, soils of fields within $3\~5$ meters from highway appeared to contain $11\~110\;ppm$ of lead. On the other hand, soils outside of $3\~5$ meters showed only natural background level of lead. 2. The maximum concentration of lead in Hwoedeuk area (Choong-nam p개vince) was 16.3 ppm and those of Kimhae and Dongrae areas were about 12 ppm. Low concentration of $1\~4\;ppm$ was observed in the areas, south of Daejeon along the Honam and Namhae highways. 3. Lead seemed to accumulate in the soil surface within the range of 0 to 5 centimeters which anable to expect little translocation to deeper layer of the soil. 4. lost of arable lands locates at least 15 meters apart from highways so that lead concentrations were lower than expected. No damage could be speculated with the present concentration of lead analyzed. This does not deny the necessity to the long term dectect of the possible pollutant.
