The Relative Effects of Human Capital and Social Capital on the Economic Well-being of the Late Middle-aged in Korea (중년기의 경제적 복지에 대한 인적자본과 사회자본의 상대적 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative effects of human capital and social capital on the economic well-being of late middle-aged Koreans. The data from the first wave of KLoSA (Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging) aged 50-64 were used (n=4,040). The major findings were as follows: First, human capital and social capital are both resources that can contribute to increasing the economic well-being of the middle-aged. Second, the relative contribution of human capital to the economic well-being of the middle-aged varied by the level of social capital, including formal network and informal network. Third, the relative contribution of social capital to the economic well-being of the middle-aged varied by the level of human capital, including employment type and educational attainment. Based on empirical results, the implications for social investment in human capital and social capital were provided.

Relationships among Rehabilitation Motivation, Perceived Stress and Social Support in Stroke Survivors (뇌졸중 환자가 지각한 스트레스, 사회적 지지 및 재활 동기와의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify related factors of stress, social support and rehabilitation motivation of stroke survivors and analyze their relationship. Method: A sample of 106 stroke survivors completed face-to-face interviews. The levels of stress, social support and rehabilitation motivation were measured by the Neuman's stress, Multidimentional Scale Perceived Social Support and Han's Rehabilitation Motivation, respectively. The t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation were conducted using the SPSS 17.0. Results: The mean scores of stress, social support and rehabilitation motivation were 3.3 (SD=0.76), 3.2 (SD=0.88), and 3.4 (SD=0.49) respectively. Compared to stroke survivors who had no spouses, those with spouses had a lower level of stress (t=9.52, p=.003), a higher level of social support (t=7.32, p=.008) and a higher level of rehabilitation motivation (t=15.39, p=.001). The rehabilitation motivation was significantly higher in stroke survivors with higher education (F=5.00, p=.001), more monthly income (F=15.39, p=.001), greater income satisfaction (F=3.80, p=.026), shorter duration of disease (F=3.64, p=.030) and absence of dysarthria (t=6.81, p=.010). Stress, social support and rehabilitation motivation are significantly related with each other. Conclusion: The findings suggest that these significant factors should be considered when caring for stroke survivors.

Perception of Inequality and Societal Health: Analysis on Social Trust and Social Mobility

  • As societal interest in inequality increases in Korea, both public and academic discussion on inequality is also on the rise. In order to more effectively discuss the problems of rising inequality, however, it is essential to study the consequences and implications of inequality. This study examines one of the consequences of inequality, particularly on individuals - the relationship between an individual's perception of inequality and his/her evaluation of societal health, such as social trust and social mobility. According to a statistical analysis of the Korean Academic Multimode Open Survey for Social Sciences (KAMOS), those who perceive the level of income and wealth inequality in Korea as more unequal tend to have a lower level of trust toward Korean society and Korean people, as well as a lower expectation for both intra- and intergenerational social mobility. This study, which shows that rising inequality could have a negative impact at the individual level, not only extends the scope of the consequence-of-inequality studies from the society-oriented toward the individual-oriented, but it also has significant implications for the field, suggesting a new direction for future studies.

The Main & Buffering Effects of Perceived Social Support on Burnout of Insurance Review Nurses (보험심사간호사가 지각한 사회적 지지가 소진에 미치는 직접효과 및 완충효과)

  • Purpose: The purposes were to survey the level of work stress, social support, burnout of insurance review nurses and to measure the main & buffering effect of perceived social support on burnout. Method: The samples were 285 insurance review nurses who were registered in Review Nurses Association of Korea at the period of 25 July and 12 August in 2005. Data were analyzed by using of t-test, Pearson's correlation, stepwise multiple regression, two-way ANOVA. Results: There were significant differences of burnout according to the work experience, position, and work satisfaction of insurance review nurses. Among the variables explaining the level of burnout of review nurses, the most significant variable was work stress, followed by current work satisfaction, social support, position and total variance explained was 40.8%. For the analysis of the buffering effects of perceived social support on work stress and burnout, the interaction between work stress and social support was not significant. Conclusions: It is necessary to construct the social support system and to reduce the work stress in order to reduce the level of the burnout of insurance review nurses.

The Effects of the Maternal Adult Attachment and Affectionate Child-rearing Behavior on a Child′s Social Competence (어머니의 성인기 애착과 애정적 양육행동이 아동의 사회적 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this research is to delineate the effects of the material adult attachment and affectionate child-rearing behavior on the social competence of a child. The levels of mother's education and income, as well as the maternal adult attachment and affectionate child-rearing behavior have been chosen for the analysis. The sample subjects selected for the research include 287 pairs of fifth/sixth grade students, their mothers, and eight of the classroom teachers, all from Kwangiu city. The major findings are as follows: First, in measuring the social competence score of a child and the maternal adult attachment, affectionate child-rearing behavior, the scores, in general, tend to be above the mean scores. Second, looking at the correlation between the mother's education/income level and affectionate child-rearing and the child's social competence level, the affectionate child-rearing and the social competence factors only show difference correlating to the mother's education, high school or higher, as opposed to the level of junior high and lower, the difference is significant. Third, the results of multiple regression analysis on the effects of the variables to the child's social competence indicates that affectionate child-rearing is the most significant contributing factor, followed by the mother's education, the close attachment factor, income, and the anxiety attachment factor, in that order All in all, the variables account for 18% of the child's social competence score.

  • In an effort to identify predictors of job performance, research studies in social work administration has been so far on the individual practitioners' levels of knowledge and skills, which could be used in a workplace. As the theoretical concept of organizational environment was fully introduced into social work administration research, however, studies on practitioners' job performance began to have interest in the team or the organizational level variables as well as individual level variables. Along the course of this tendency, this study attempted to test the effect of individual, team, and organizational level variables on the job performance of human service workers. The individual level variables consisted of knowledge, skills, job satisfaction, personality, and counter-productive work behaviors of workers. The team or the organizational level variables included situational constraint, organizational justice, job characteristics, government-dependency, and inter-organizational cooperation. Multi-level complex survey data collected by cluster sampling method from 314 practitioners in 23 organizations were analyzed using Hierarchial Linear Model. Results showed that both task and contextual performance were affected by individual, team, and organizational level variables in various ways.

Health Status of Elderly Living in a City (노인의 건강상태)

  • Purpose: This study examined the health status of elderly. Method: This is a survey using cross-sectional design. The subject were 122 elders who were 65 and over in Daejeon. Instrumental activity of daily living, nutrition and Body mass index for physical health status, social engagement for social health status, and depression and loneliness for emotional health status were measured. Results: Independent level was medium, and nutrition and BMI were normal level. Social engagement score was 2.38 which means low. Mean depression level was 7.71 and mean loneliness level was 56.77, which means high. The risk factors for vulnerable health status were no spouse, lower pocket money, living at institution, poor subjective health status. Conclusion: This finding indicates that the elderly subjects were in normal physical health status, but social and emotional health status were poor.

  • The primary concerns of recreation plan are to provide visitors with quality of recreational experience and to protect of recreation resources. The quality of recreational experience is often defined in terms of social carrying capacity. The carrying capacity is revealed as perceived crowding. In this respects, measuring perceived crowding is useful tool of social carrying capacity determination. This study is to test the structural equation model that includes variables affecting perceived crowding. Through an on-site questionnaire survey, 467 visitors on Naejangsan national park were collected. The results of the study are follows. The encounter level on facility area is higher evaluated as crowding factor than other area in the park. It can be concluded that visitor perceived crowding when facility area situates high density use level rather than other areas expose high density use level. In the path analysis, the input variables(attitude, experience, encounter level) on the structural equation model affect significantly on perceived crowding. Especially, the attitude on the park management polocy is the most affecting factor on perceived crowding.

Attachment Styles and Social Networks of Mothers of School Children (학동기 자녀를 둔 어머니의 애착양식과 사회관계망)

  • This study examined the impact of attachment styles on the size and the level of functions of social networks. 270 mothers of school children responded to the questionnaire and were classified into secure avoidant and anxious attachment groups. Findings indicated that three continuous attachment indexes security avoidance anxiousness and the size and the level of functions of social networks were not affected by mother's age educational level and employment status. However singnificant attachment style effects were obtained for the size and the level of functions of social networks. Secure subjects perceived their husbands closer and more important and listed more nonkin members in their netoworks than anxious subjects. important and listed more nonkin members in their networks than anxious subjects Also secure people perceived receiving more assistance from network members including household tasks money information and advice Secure and anxious subjects reported more emotio al support from networks than avoidant people.

An Empirical Study of Social Workers' Organizational Commitment : Analyzing Mediating Effect of Organizational Cynicism (사회복지사의 조직몰입에 관한 연구 : 조직 냉소주의의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The main objective of this study is to examine antecedents and outcome of organizational cynicism. This paper focuses on organizational commitment of social worker as outcome variable. Thus, this study attempts to examine structural relation of variables of organizational level(personnel management), job level(job characteristics), and individual level(level of self-control) on the level of organizational commitment, with special concern about the mediating effect of organizational cynicism. The study conducted mail survey and collected information for data analysis from 330 social workers working at 173 social welfare organizations in Seoul and Kyong-gi area, The study used structural equation modeling(SEM) method for analyzing the constructed model. Main results are as follows: (1) evaluation about personnel management is negatively related to organizational cynicism; (2) evaluation about job characteristics is negatively related to organizational cynicism; (3) evaluation about self-control is negatively related to organizational cynicism; (4) organizational cynicism exerts negative effect on the level of organizational commitment; and (5) evaluation about personnel management, evaluation about job characteristics, and evaluation about self-control exerts positive effect on the level of organizational commitment. Among the results of this study, this paper focuses on the function of personnel management system on organizational cynicism. This paper emphasizes that social welfare organizations must make a lot of efforts for making fair personnel system in order to reduce social workers' organizational cynicism and ultimately promote their organizational commitment.
