  • This study investigated the relationship between preschool children's social competence and perceived social support. The subjects were 85 children enrolled in 10 kindergartens and nurseries located in Seoul. Social support was assessed by children themselves with a social support dialogue Cask, "My Family and Friends," developed by Reid, Lamdegman, and Jaccard (1989). This task consists of 12 dialogues based on Vygotskian principles. Social competency was assessed by teachers with a slightly modified version of Song's Iowa Social Competency Scale (ISCS). The data were analyzed by frequencies percentiles, mean, one-way ANOVAs, and Pearson's correlations. Results showed that (1) Children perceived parents to be the best multi-purpose social providers: mothers for emotional support and fathers for instrumental support. (2) Children with unemployed mothers perceived higher maternal emotional, informational, and instrumental support than children with employed mothers. (3) Middle-class children perceived higher friendship support than upper-or lower-class children. (4) Friendship support was the one variable most significantly related to children's social competence.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the housing pathways of middle-class married women toward owning a first home. In doing so, an in-depth interview as a qualitative method was conducted, life history was utilized to track down the path to first-home owning, and all the interviews were transcribed for analysis. The research participants were well-educated middle-class full-time housewives owning a home. The findings indicated that family formation through marriage and child birth was a primary driving force to buy a home. It was shown that owning a home was perceived not just as a stepping stone for building both family wealth and social capital but as one of the most important pillars to reinforcing traditional family values. In spite of some intergenerational distinctions on the path toward home owning, commonalities across generations included that home owning was considered to be a social icon for middle-class, it became almost impossible for younger generations without parental support which stimulated the intergenerational transfer of wealth, and it was greatly determined by both family income (affordability) and home finance options(borrowing capacity). This research implies that the changing social landscape transforms the value on homeownership and could undermine the socioeconomic strengths of home owning. Nonetheless, it's of importance to strategically assist first homebuyers who are likely to be a member of middle-class.

  • Residential space can be stated as a decisive body compositely affected by environmental, physical, social, and cultural influences. Resulting from this idea, residential space can be defined as a mirror reflecting peoples' life at that period. Therefore, it is possible to understand the social and cultural aspects of a certain era through analyzing the residential space built and used at that period. Viewing from this point, latter term of Chosun Period, as a transitional period, was a tie of collapse for the structure of middle-class society forcing its identity system to be reorganized, and of improving upon commerce, agriculture, and manual industry to enable modernization. Following this idea, the goal of this research is to analyze characteristics of higher middle class residences built at the close of 19th century in Gyeonggi province in order to bring into light the change of social structure of the period.

  • This study aims to empirically structure the patterns of consumption and their effects on depression among the employed baby-boomers who were born in 1955 to in 1963. We used the 5th wave of Korea Retirement and Income Study(KReIS) in 2013 (n=2,585). The Latent Profile Analysis(LPA) estimated the empirical patterns of consumption and then a multiple regression analyzed the effect of consumption patterns on depression. The LPA results showed that the consumption patterns consist of four groups: Basic life-oriented class, Social life-oriented class, Home-based lifestyle class, and Advanced consumption-oriented class. The working baby boomers' depression was associated with their consumption patterns. Specifically, the social life-oriented class showed significantly lower depression than the basic life-oriented class and advanced consumption-oriented class. Other associates with higher levels of depression were found as lower education, having no spouse, lower self-rated health, higher levels of physical limitation, having a diagnosed disability, lower satisfaction with leisure activities, lower income, and lower subjective economic status in this study. Based on the results of this study, we propose the need for specialized financial intervention better for baby-boomers' retirement preparation in Korea.

A total of 59 5th grade students in randomly selected two classes of D Elementary School in N. Gyongsang participated in this study. They were divided into the two groups, again at random; an experimental group(N=30, Male=18, Female=12) and a control group(N=29, Male=15, Female=14). In this study, the class cohesiveness performance test reorganized into 20 items for the level of elementary students by Shin-suk Gang, was applied, after complemented. And, the collected data were analysed through SPSS 14.0. T-test was applied to find out the difference of the average between the experimental group and the control group and the average difference in the pre-and post-test of the experimental group alone, and to see whether the control group and the experimental group are homogeneous. The research design of this study is pre-and post-test control group design. The result of this study is as follows: The result of Independent t-test and Paried t-test on the cohesiveness score and sub-factor scores tells us that the experimental group which received the social skills training showed better achievement that deserves our attention compared to the control group. This result suggests that student's class cohesiveness(class atmosphere, mutual trust, morale, a sense of unity, communication) is positively affected by the social skill training. Accordingly, social skill training which develops class cohesiveness can be an effective strategy for elementary school students to make them more intimate and cooperative with their classmates.

  • Urben wage workers' education expenditure among different social classes from 1979 to 1993 has been compared. Eduction expenditure has increased much more than that of income resulting from income increase and government policy. Education expenditure gaps among social classes have showed to be an increasing trend although the ratio of education expense to the income has increased among low class families. Average income elasticity was 1.1 and this result showed that education expense was luxury good. Income elasticity of education expense among low class families have fluctuated more than any other classes resulting from construction business cycle and housing rent increase. Average Gini coefficient was 0.38 and turned out to be highest among 9 household expenditures, however it was in the trend of improvement from 81. But from 91 Gini Coefficient went up high again. Main reason for this increase was due to high social class families' eucation expenditure increase. Government's strong policies to enhance equality level of education opportunity and to support low class families are urged.

  • The main purpose of the school library is to present the various kinds of instructional media for an effective instruction including not only books, but also audiovisual materials and equipments. But unfortunately our school libraries have only books for the students and faculties at this time. But hereafter school library should house the various kinds of audiovisual media as well as printed media for the promotion of scholarstic achivemint. With a view to promoting the teaching method, and at the same time improving the scholarstic achivement of the students, instructional media were used in the class. To verify the efficiency of the instructional media, transparencies were used in the social science class of the 1st grade in the middle school and the natural science class of the 1st grade in the high school. In consequence, the academic achievement of the experimental class in which instructional media were used is superior to that of controlled class in which the textbook was only used. In < Social Science I >, the mean difference between the experimental class and the controlled class is 4.199 marks. And the difference, 0.032 is verified as a significant value in concordance to the t-test. In < Natural Science I >, the mean difference of the experimental class over the controlled class is 6.333. And the difference, 0.034 is verified as a significant value in concordance to the t-test. As shown in the above experimental research, using various kinds of the instructional media is more efficient than using textbook only. As a result of the questionaire on using the instructional media, most of the students desire to use of them continually because the use of the instructional media induce the interest, promote the comprehension, and entice the development of better memories.
