  • SG-365 steel is an important material End used for manufacturing a pressure vessel and gas piping. In this investigation, the elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the unloading compliance method according to the ASTM E8l3-97 and E1152-97 method on the smooth and side groove In specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the elastic plastic fracture toughness. The side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_{IC}$. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides. it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering of them and crack tunneling effect and shear lip by the side groove.

  • This paper presents vibration minimization of a PMLSM driven feed-slide by using optimized smooth velocity curve with finite jerk. First of all, the PMLSM was designed and made to reduce detent force. Next, a PMLSM driven feed-slide system was mathematically modeled as a 4-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model. The key idea of our vibration minimization method is to find out the most appropriate smooth velocity(feedrate) curve with finite jerk. The validity of our proposed method has been verified by comparing computer simulation results of the feed-slide model with experimental ones.

  • A piecewise smooth system is characterized by non-differentiability on a curve in the phase space. In this paper, we discuss particular bifurcation phenomena in the dynamics of a piecewise smooth system. We consider a two-dimensional piecewise smooth system which is composed of a linear map and a nonlinear map, and analyze the stability of the system to determine the existence of dangerous border-collision bifurcation. We finally present some numerical examples of the bifurcation phenomena in the system.

  • The evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1C}$ was performed on the center of weld metal(CWM), the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM) of API 5LB steel pipes welded by the high frequency electric resistance welding. The $J_{1C}$ was evaluated by the JSME R-Curve and JSME SZW methods using the smooth and side-grooved specimens. The results are as follows; (1) The $J_{1C}$ values by the SZW method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method, because the micro-crack is formed as SZW increase with the deformation at SZ after initiation of the ductile crack. (2) The everage of $J_{1C}$ values by the the R-curve and the SZW methods in side-grooved specimens tended to decrease in comparison with smooth specimens 9.42% at CWM, 4.2% at HAZ, 23.2% at BM, respectively. (3) The boundary of the fatigue pre-crack, stretched zone, and dimple regions appeared more clearly in side-grooved specimens, for the slight change of SZW in the direction of the plate thickness, as compared with smooth specimens.

  • In the previous paper [4], we classified the Weierstrass semigroups at a pair of inflection points of multiplicities d and d - 1 on a smooth plane curve of degree d. In this paper, as a continuation of those results, we classify all semigroups each of which arises as a Weierstrass semigroup at a pair of inflection points of multiplicities d, d - 1 and d - 2 on a smooth plane curve of degree d.

  • For a smooth plane curve, the curvature can be characterized by the rate of change of the angle between the tangent vector and a fixed vector. In this article we prove that the curvature of a space curve can also be given by the rate of change of the locally defined angle between the tangent vector at a point and the nearby point. By using height functions, we introduce turning angle of a space curve and characterize the curvature by the rate of change of the turning angle. The main advantage of the turning angle is that it can be used to characterize the curvature of discrete curves. For this purpose, we introduce a discrete turning angle and a discrete curvature called visual curvature for space curves. We can show that the visual curvature is an approximation of curvature for smooth curves.

  • For the life evaluating of notched members, it is the best way that performing the real fatigue test of structure containing notch. But this method required generally much times and costs to evaluate fatigue life. So, generally we use the modified S-N curve or several methods to predict fatigue life. In this study, crack initiation life was evaluated by fatigue testing the SAE keyhole specimen and smooth specimen made of Al 7075-T6 alloys using the constant load then obtained S-N curve of smooth specimen and P-N curve of SAE keyhole specimen. And, fatigue lives of keyhole specimen are predicted using some life prediction methods (Nominal range I method, Nominal range II method, FEM analysis) for investigating experimented results, and that were compared with experimental data. Predicted fatigue lives by FEM analysis were corresponded with experimental data between 1/3times and 3times on the whole, and predicted fatigue lives using modified S-N curve (Nominal range I method, Nominal range II method) were nonconservative compared with that of FEM analysis.

  • A new algorithm has been developed to construct surface from the contours having branches and the final smooth surface is obtained by the reversible Catmull-Clark subdivision. In branching, a particular layer has more than one contour that correspond with at least one contour at the adjacent layer. In the next step, three-dimensional composite curve is constructed from contours of a layer having correspondence with at least one contour at the adjacent layer by inserting points between them and joining the contours. The points are inserted in such a way that the geometric center of the contours should merge at the center of the contours at the adjacent layer. This process is repeated for all layers having branching problems. Polyhedra are constructed in the next step with the help of composite curves and the contours at adjacent layer. The required smooth surface is obtained in the proposed work by providing the level of smoothness.
