An elasto-plastic constitutive model was proposed, in which the behavior at small-to-large strain level can be modeled. The proposed model is based on the anisotropic hardening description with the generalization of isotropic hardening rule and the total stress concept. From a mathematical approach it was proved that the model includes the previous successful models. The model was verified by a series of resonant column tests, torsional shear tests and triaxial tests, and the proposed model predicted small-to-large strain behavior more consistently and accurately than the hyperbolic model and the Ramberg-Osgood model for a weathered granitic soil. In addition, the nonlinearity under small strain condition was predicted appropriately for the torsional shear test results.

Engineered mixtures composed of rigid sand particles and soft rubber particles are tested to investigate their behavior with strain level. Mixtures are prepared with different volumetric sand fractions (sf) to identify response using small strain resonant column, intermediate strain oedometer, and large strain direct shear tests. The small strain shear modulus and damping ratio are determined with volumetric sand fractions. The asymmetric frequency response curve increases with decreasing sand fraction. Linear responses of shear strain and damping ratio with shear strain are observed at the mixture of sf=0.2. Vertical strain increases with decreasing sand fraction. Mixtures with $04.{\leq}sf{\leq}0.6$ show the transitional stress-deformation behavior from rubber-like to sand-like behavior. The friction angle increases with the sand fraction and no apparent peak strength is observed in mixture without sf=1.0.
The is study is to evaluate the small strain shear modulus ($G_{max}$) of Busan clay using in-situ penetration tests. A series of dilatometer tests (DMT) and piezocone penetration tests (CPTu) are performed at Busan newport and Noksan sites, and hybrid oedometer tests are also carried out on the specimens obtained from both sites. The $G_{max}$ is evaluated from the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) measured by the bender elements installed at the boundary of oedometer cell. By analyzing these data, the relationship of $G_{max}$ and state variables, such as confined stress and void ratio, is developed. The analysis of lab and in-situ test results reveals that the ratio of $G_{max}$ to $q_t$ is inversely proportional to the plasticity index while the ratio of $G_{max}$ to $E_D$ has a linear relationship with ($I/I_D$)$(p_a/{\sigma}'_v)^{0.5}$. Two correlations suggested in this study, based on CPT and DMT results, appear to provide reasonable predictions of the small strain shear modulus.
Maximum shear modulus of soil is a principal parameter for the design of earth structures under static and dynamic loads. In this study, the statistical data of maximum shear moduli of silty sands in Songdo area in the west coast of Korea evaluated by various field and laboratory tests - standard penetration test (SPT), cone penetration test (CPT), self-boring pressuremeter test (SBPT), downhole test (DH), seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) and resonant column test (RC) were analyzed. Based on the measurement of shear moduli using DH which is known as maximum value at very small strain, the new empirical correlations between shear moduli and SPT or CPT values were proposed. Predictions of maximum shear moduli using the proposed correlations were compared with the data obtained from DH. The good agreement confirmed that the proposed correlations reasonably predicted the maximum shear moduli of silty sands in the area.

The bender element method is an experimental technique to determine very small strain ($<10^{-3}\%$), elastic shear modulus of a soil, $G_{max}$ by measuring the velocity of shear wave propagation through a sample. Bender elements have been applied as versatile transducers to measure small strain modulus of wet or dry soils in various laboratory apparatus. In this paper, bender element (BE), resonant column (RC) and torsional shear (TS) tests were performed on Toyoura sand at various testing conditions using the modified Stokoe type RC/TS testing equipment capable of performing BE test. Based on the results, applicabilities of the testing method using bender element were evaluated by comparing the values of $G_{max}$ obtained from RC/TS and BE testing methods. For more dependable evaluation, the loading frequency of each testing method was considered for the results obtained for samples in saturated condition by adapting Biot's theory.
Earlier studies on hollow-circular rubber bearings, all of which are conducted for steel-reinforced bearings, indicate that the hole presence not only decreases the compression modulus of the bearing but also increases the maximum shear strain developing in the bearing due to compression, both of which are basic design parameters also for fiber-reinforced rubber bearings. This paper presents analytical solutions to the compression problem of hollow-circular fiber-reinforced rubber bearings. The problem is handled using the most-recent formulation of the "pressure method". The analytical solutions are, then, used to investigate the effects of reinforcement flexibility and hole presence on bearing's compression modulus and maximum shear strain in the bearing in view of four key parameters: (i) reinforcement extensibility, (ii) hole size, (iii) bearing's shape factor and (iv) rubber compressibility. It is shown that the compression stiffness of a hollow-circular fiber-reinforced bearing may decrease considerably as reinforcement flexibility and/or hole size increases particularly if the shape factor of the bearing is high and rubber compressibility is not negligible. Numerical studies also show that the existence of even a very small hole can increase the maximum shear strain in the bearing significantly, which has to be considered in the design of such annular bearings.
The objective is to determine the mechanical properties of the composites formed in two types, theoretically. The first composite includes micro-particles in a matrix while the second involves long, thin fibers. A fictitious, homogeneous, linear-elastic and isotropic single material named as effective material is considered during calculation which is based on the equality of the strain energies of the composite and effective material under the same loading conditions. The procedure is carried out with volume integrals considering a unique strain energy in a body. Particularly, the effective elastic shear modulus has been calculated exactly for small-particle composites by the same procedure in order to determine of bulk modulus thereof. Additionally, the transverse shear modulus of fiber reinforced composites has been obtained through a simple approach leading to the practical equation. The results have been compared not only with the outcomes in the literature obtained by different method but also with those of finite element analysis performed in this study.

It is very important to evaluate the reliable nonlinear modulus characteristics of soils not only in the analysis of geotechnical structures under working stress conditions but also for the soil dynamic problems. For the evaluation of modulus characteristics of soils, various tests have been mostly employed in laboratory. However, different testing techniques are likely to have different ranges of reliable strain measurements, different applied stress level, and different loading frequencies, and the modulus of soils can be affected by these variables. For reliable evaluation, therefore, those effects on the modulus need to be considered, and measured values should be effectively adjusted to actual conditions where the soil is working. In this paper, to evaluate the modulus characteristics of soils, laboratory testing such as free-free resonant column (FF-RC), resonant column (RC), torsional shear (TS), static TX, and cyclic M/sub R/ tests were performed. The effects of strain amplitude, loading frequency, loading cycles, confining pressure, density, and water content on modulus were investigated. It is shown that the FF-RC test, which is simple and inexpensive testing technique, can provide a reliable estimation of small strain Young's modulus (E/sub max/), and the modulus evaluated by various laboratory tests are comparable to each other fairly well when the effects of these factors are properly taken into account.
In this paper, deformation characteristics of fiber-mixed-soils were studied at small strain range(0.0001%~1%) using resonant column test and triaxial test, and reinforcement effect was evaluated by the measure of maximum shear moduli. The effects of the major parameters such as fiber content, aspect ratio and fiber type on reinforcement were comparatively assessed. The specimens were remolded from Jumunjin Sand randomly mixed with discrete polypropylene staple fibers. Maximum shear moduli of fiber-mixed-soils increased by up to 30% and modulus reduction was also restrained in nonlinear range. Shear moduli increased as the aspect ratio increases. The reinforcement was more effective with fibrillated fiber than with monofilament fiber. The most effective reinforcement was achieved with the specimen of 0.3 % fiber content.

The small-strain shear modulus ($G_{max}$) of uncemented sand is affected by the the mean principal stress and void ratio, and it has been known that the cementation and aging also affect to $G_{max}$ of sand. For extensive understanding about the effect of cementation on the $G_{max}$ of sand, a series of bender element tests was conducted on the cemented specimens prepared in a large calibration chamber by pluviation of the sand-gypsum mixture. It was observed from the experimental results that the $G_{max}$ of cemented sand is higher above 10 times than value of uncemented one, and it increases exponentially with the gypsum content increases. Whereas, the increase of the vertical stress from 50kPa to 200kPa and the relative density from 40% to 80% result in 20~30% and 2 times increase of $G_{max}$, respectively. It means that the gypsum content, that is cementation level, is the most influential factor on the $G_{max}$ of cemented sand. In addition, the effect of relative density on $G_{max}$ was more apparent on cemented sand than uncemented one.
