  • Wheel and rail wear is a fundamental and complicate problem in railway field. The life of railway is usually limited by wear. The wheel surface is subjected to high normal and tangential contact stress. The removal of material from the surface by wear is function of the sliding and contact stress. In the present paper, the wear characteristic depended on slip rate, contact pressure and temperature are investigated and is used to twin disc tester. The result shows that the wear in wheel-rail interface is remarkably depended on slip rate and contact pressure.

  • In this paper the CSCM type upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study the ARL-SL19 supersonic/transonic compressor cascade flow. H-type grid was chosen for its simplicity in applying cyclic tridiagonal matrix algorithm along with conventional slip/no-slip boundary conditions. The thin-layer algebraic model of Baldwin-Lomax was employed for the calculation of turbulent flows. The test case inlet Mach No. was 1.612 and inlet/exit pressure ratio($P_2/P_1$) was 2.15. The results were compared with experimental results from current method were compared well in suction surface with the experiments and other computational results; however, not well in pressure surface. It might be due to the complex flowfields such as shock/boundary layer interaction, turbulence, and flow separation, etc. In the future, a proper turbulence modelling and adaptive grid system will be studied to improve the solution quality.

  • Residual shear strength should be taken into consideration as well as peak one when analysing stability of slopes constituted by weathered rock or overconsolidated soils since such materials could be subjected to progressive failure mechanism. When landslide of a slope is related to progressive failure phenomenon, the failure might occur even though shear strength of the slope materials does not reach their residual shear strength over the whole slip surface. Therefore, stability of the slope concerned may be overstimated or underestimated when using only its peak or residual shear srength parameters. Mechanical description for progressive failure phenomenon is given by Bjerrum(1967). In parameters. Mechanical description for progressive failure phenomenon is given by Bjerrum(1967). In this study, his theory has been extended to estimate the distance of failed zone for a plane slope and the results calculated by this extended equatio has been compared with that obtained by numerical modelling using FLAC. In addition, stress state on the slip surface has been, in detail, analysed to understand failure mechanism when a limited progressive failure occurs. Effects of mechanical and hydraulic factors on progressive failure have also been analysed.

  • In this study, the possibility of estimation of friction coefficient between tire and road surface using running car data are checked. To get necessary data, such as tire and car velocities and braking force, a test car is driven with certain magnitude of decelerations from pre-set initial velocities to stop . The data are used to estimate friction coefficient with property chosen parameters , e.g,, driving stiffness, pressure distribution functions, etc. Experimental results show that running data car be used with properly chosen parameters to estimate friction coefficient.

  • Recently, experimental visualization of microscale fluid transport has attacted considerable attention in designing microelectromechanical systems. Fluid-surface interactions on hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces can play a key role in passively controlling microfluidics. Here we investigate the slip boundary condition depending on the surface characteristics; hydrophilic, hydrophobic wettabilities. Using the micro-PIV, velocity profiles are measured in the glass (hydrophilic), PDMS (hydrophobic) microchannels.

  • Structural phase transformations of silicon during nanoindentation were investigated in detail at the atomic level. The molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation on the (100), (110) and (111) surface of single crystalline silicon were simulated, and this supported the theoretical prediction of the anisotropic behavior of structural phase transformations. Simulations showed that microscopic aspects of phase transformation varied according to the crystallographic orientation of the contact surface and were directly linked to the slip system.

  • During Compression molding of polymeric composite materials, the flow characteristics should be obtained. Understanding the flow states may be useful for determination of optimum molding conditions, charge pattern etc. So far, for obtaining the flow analysis, no-slip boundary condition was applied on the mold surface. However, The study under consideration of the slip was conducted by Barone and Caulk. They have introduced the nondimensional parameter which is the ratio of viscous to friction resistance and governs the frictional condition. But the method for determining the parameter could not be proposed. In our work, the parameter which explains the interfacial friction is measured under a variety of molding conditions. Two-dimensional rectangular part and circular hollow disk are simulated with the measured parameter using the finite element method. Effects of the parameter on shapes of flow fronts are also presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the stress-induced pattern at the supporting bone, the implant fixture, the abutment and the abutment screw according to a friction-fit joint (Astra; Model 1) or slip- fit joint (Frialit-2; Model 2) in the internal connection system under vertical and inclined loading using finite element analysis. In conclusion, in the internal connection system of the implant and the abutment connection methods, the stress-induced pattern at the supporting bone, the implant fixture, the abutment and the abutment screw according to the abutment connection form had difference among them, and the stress distribution pattern usually had a widely distributed tendency along the inner surface of the implant fixture contacting the abutment post. The magnitude of the stress distributed in the supporting bone, the implant fixture, the abutment and the abutment screw was higher in the friction-fit joint than in the slip-fit joint. But it is considered that the further study is necessary about how this difference in the magnitude of the stress have an effect on the practical clinic.

  • Tribological properties of hybrid type friction materials were studied. Hybrid friction materials were produced by combining non-steel(NS) and low-steel(LS) type friction materials. The emphasis of the investigation was given to possible synergistic effects from the two different friction materials, in terms of friction stability at high temperatures and the amplitude of friction oscillation, also known as stick-slip at low sliding speeds. The high temperature friction test results showed that the friction effectiveness of the hybrid friction material was well sustained compared to LS and NS friction materials. Wear resistance of the hybrid type was similar to LS friction materials. Examination of the rubbing surfaces after tests revealed that the friction characteristics of the hybrid friction material were attributed to the wear debris produced from low-steel friction materials, which were migrated to the surface of the non-steel friction material, forming new contact plateaus. The stick-slip amplitude and its frequency were pronounced when non-steel friction material was tested, while hybrid and low-steel types showed relatively small stick-slip amplitudes. These results suggest possible improvement of tribological properties by designing a hybrid composite of low-steel and non-steel friction materials.

  • Force balance method is employed to predict forging information such as forging load, tool pressure and normal stress at the surface of tangential velocity discontinuity. The incipient stages of deformation for the plane strain forging of rectangular billets in V-shaped dies of different semi-angles are analysed. To construct an approximate model for the analysis of deformation by the force balance method in the incipient deformation stages, slip-line field is used. When the deformation mode by slip-line method is the same as that by force balance method, the slip-line method and the force balance method give identical solutions. The effects of die angle, coefficient of friction, billet geometries and deforma- tion characteristics are also investigated. In order to verify the validity of force balance analysis, the rigid-plastic finite element simulation for the various forgig parameters are performed and performed and find to be in good agreement.
