  • Position tracking control of a link of a slave manipulator which needed to track the corresponding link of a master manipulator was addressed in this paper. Since driving torque from motor is transmitted through a set of flexible cable to link, the motion control system is modeled by a two-mass model connected with elastic coupling which has finite stiffness. Relative vibration of two-mass resonant system is a serious problem to operate manipulator. This paper proposed sliding mode control to reduce resonant vibration and fine position tracking control. Also, a pseudo-sliding mode control which uses a saturation function instead of a signum function was discussed and showed that the pseudo-sliding mode control can improve disturbance regulation performance as well as guarantees fine command tracking without chattering which is an inherent drawback of basic sliding mode control. In addition, a disturbance observer based sliding mode control has been suggested to improve disturbance regulation performance. The feasibility of the proposed control design was verified along with some simulation results.

  • Robot manipulator has highly nonlinear dynamics. Therefore the control of multi-link robot arms is a challenging and difficult problem. In this paper a decentralized adaptive fuzzy sliding mode scheme is developed for control of robot manipulators. The proposed scheme does not require an accurate manipulator dynamic model, yet it guarantees asymptotic trajectory tracking despite gross robot parameter variations. Numerical simulation for decentralized control of a 3-axis PUMA arm will also be included.

  • An algorithm of fuzzy predictive sliding control is proposed to design a jet engine control system. Sliding control using predictive scheme is adopted to compensate the time delay of fuel injector. Fuzzy rule-base is also introduced to adjust the command input for suppressing the surge. The potential of the proposed algorithm is shown through simulations utilizing a typical engine-only model.

  • Nonlinear pulse width modulation(PWM) controlled system is considered to achieve control performance of thruster-controlled spacecraft. The actual PWM controlled motions occurs, very closely, around the average model rajectory. Furthermore nonlinear PWM controller design can be directly applied to thruster controlled spacecraft to determine thruster on-time. Sliding mode control for attitude tracking of three-axis thruster-controlled spacecraft is presented. Simulation results are shown which use modified Rodrigues parameters and sliding mode control law to achieve attitude tracking of a three-axis spacecraft with thrusters.

  • We propose the hybrid robust controller for TDC(Time Delay Control) and SMC(Sliding Mode Control) method. TDC and SMC deal with the time-varying system parameters, unknown dynamics and unexpected disturbance. This controller is applied to follow the desired reference model for the uncertain time-varying overhead crane. The control performance is evaluated through simulation. The theoretical results indicate That the proposed controller shows excellent performance to an overhead crane with the uncertain time-varying parameters and disturbance.

  • This paper deals with a fuzzy sliding mode observer for nonlinear systems. A nonlinear system is approximated by a multiple model Takagi Sugeno fuzzy system and then transformed into a canonical form for which a nonlinear observer is constructed. This study presents a type of fuzzy sliding mode observer that deals with matched and unmatched uncertainties in the plant dynamics very effectively. The proposed method was validated by the example of a inverted pendulum.

  • In this paper, we propose a new model of the magnetic control force exerted on the levitation object in magnetic levitation systems. The model assumes that the magnetic force is a function of the voltage applied to an electromagnet and the position of a levitation object. The function is not explicitly expressed but represented through a 2D lookup table constructed from the experimentally measured data. Unlike the conventional model that reveals only local characteristics of the magnetic force, the proposed model shows global characteristics satisfactorily. Specially devised measurement equipment is utilized in order to gather the data required for model construction. An experimental procedure to construct the model is presented. We apply the proposed model to designing a sliding mode controller for a lab-built magnetic system. The validity of the proposed model is illustrated by comparing the performances of the controller adopting the conventional model with that of the controller adopting the proposed model.

  • Partial safety factors of the load, resistance, and reliability function are evaluated according to the target probability of failure on sliding mode of monolithical vertical caisson of composite breakwaters. After reliability function is formulated for sliding failure mode of caisson of composite breakwaters regarding bias of wave force, uncertainties of random variables related to loads, strengths are analyzed. Reliability analysis for the various conditions of water depth, geometric, and wave conditions is performed using Level II AFDA model for the sliding failure. Furthermore, the reliability model is also applied to the real caisson of composite breakwaters of Daesan, Dong- hae, and Pohang harbor. By comparing the required width of caisson of composite breakwater according to target probability of failure with the other results, the partial safety factors evaluated in this study are calibrated straightforwardly. Even though showing a little difference on the 1% of target probability, it may be found that the present results agree well with the other results in every other target probability of failure.

  • In this paper, the variable structure model following control scheme is proposed for the nonlinear robot manipulator system. The proposed control system guarantees that the system state is in the sliding mode for all time. Therefore, error transient can be prescribed in advance for all time. Furthermore, overall system is globally exponentially stable. Chattering problem is reduced by the introduction of a boundary layer. Simulation results are given to show the usefulness of the proposed control scheme.
