The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary students' difficulties when they read the illustrations on scientific textbook. 5 illustrations were selected on basis that they had some of the textual/graphical features. The data were collected from open-ended questionnaires and follow-up interviews. To investigate difficulties of reading illustrations, 100 sixth grade students participated in this study and interviews were taken to 9 volunteers among those participants. The results showed that many students had difficulties in the integration of verbal representation and realistic image representation on the illustration, therefore they often misunderstood the meaning of illustration. These results gave several recommendations when we used illustrations as educational materials. Teachers would be better to guide that students could understand illustrations with the integration of the reading of one or more representations.

Whether and when naturalistic or supernaturalistic explanations of the origins of sun and earth, humans, life and species change with development was explored in a questionnaire and interviews with 32 first graders and 32 second graders, and in a questionnaire with 34 third graders, 32 sixth graders and 38 eighth graders. Participants were also asked about factors affecting their explanations in the questionnaires. Even the first and second graders could consistently provide supernaturalistic or naturalistic explanations on both the origins of sun and earth, and of humans. There was an age-related developmental shift from supernaturalistic to naturalistic explanation. As for origins of species, most of the first and second graders held the spontaneous generationist explanation, and after the third grade their views divided into evolutionist and creationist explanations. Students' explanations of species origins were established by the sixth grade through a transitional stage in the third grade. At the first and second grade levels, books and the children's own reasoning mainly influenced the views of origins, whereas parents and school were not perceived as being important. For the third graders and higher-grade levels, several factors, including parents and religion, were perceived as being important. These results show that explanations of origins start to develop earlier than or during the first grade, and are established by the sixth grade; moreover, the formation of these views is affected by several factors in addition to development.
In this research, I selected a Singapore elementary mathematics textbook which substantially reflects Singapore curriculum, and compared it with Korean one to understand how they differ in the contents system of the curriculum focused on the contents of the geometry and measurement strand, and analyzed their common points and different points intensively with textbooks for sixth-grade students. Also, I translated a chapter of the textbook, 'Mathematics in Action'. That chapter was about circumference and the area of the circle which is related to the shapes part. Then, I taught it to the experimental group to compare their achievement and the change of reaction to studying the shape-related parts with those of the control group. The results are the followings. First, when we analyze the contents of shape-related part of the textbooks for sixth-grade students of both countries, Singaporean textbook contains more contents that are introduced for the first time, which implies that it is more desirable to teach new concepts of shapes when students are in their higher grades. Second, as for the way they develop the activity of each chapter, Korean textbook sticks to a uniform way, while the Singapore textbook uses various ways for different subjects and grades. In addition, when they organize the contents of the textbook, they emphasize the importance of student's activity and lead students with various methods by suggesting several questions and situations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of socio-demographic variables, family emotional environment and maternal discipline style on school children's emotional regulation. Subjects of this study consisted 953 elementary school students drawn from 4 elementary schools in Cheong-ju city and Cheongwon-gun. Data were analyzed by the methods frequency, percentage, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression using SPSSWIN 12.0 program. The results of this study were as follows: First, girls used greater problem-focused coping than boys did. Children in sixth grade used more problem-focused coping regulation compared to those in fourth grade. When children perceived higher level of family communication, emotional support, participation of family rituals, family worries, and parental conflict, they were more likely to use problem-focused coping. Additionally, both maternal supportive discipline and behavioral controlling discipline styles increased children's problem-focused coping. Second, girls presented greater emotional venting than boys did. Children in sixth grade expressed higher level of emotional venting compared to those in fourth grade. While family communication, family worries, and parental conflict increased children's emotional venting, family emotional support and participation of family rituals decreased it. Only mothers' psychological controlling discipline positively predicted children's emotional venting. Third, girls presented higher level of children's aggressive expression than boys did. The lower level of family support increased children's aggressive expression. Higher level of family worries and parental conflict increased it as well. Also, children's aggressive expression was positively predicted by mothers' psychological controlling discipline. Fourth, girls presented greater avoidance than boys did. Children in sixth grade expressed higher level of emotional avoidance compared to those in fourth grade. In family emotional environment, while family support lowered children's emotional avoidance, family worries and parental conflict increased it. Moreover, mothers' psychological and behavioral controlling discipline styles positively explained children's emotional avoidance. In conclusion, family emotional environment was the strongest factor to predict school children's emotional regulation among other variables.
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the attitude and recognition on how to describe the elderly of elementary school students. Methods: The subject of this study was total 806 students of 4, 5, 6 grade at 2 elementary schools in Gyunggi-do. The data were collected through self-reporting questionnaires for a month. Fourth, the score of word recognition about the elderly was 43.3 and social score was the highest. fifth, there were significant differences in recognition on how to describe the elderly according to grade, birth order of siblings of students and parents, domestic atmosphere, and economic status, domestic education on respect about the elderly. Sixth, there were significant differences in recognition on how to describe according to parent-grandparent relationship, health status and economic status of grandparents, meeting frequency with grandparents. Lastly, The attitude and recognition about the elderly showed significant positive relationship. Conclusion: We should provide qualitative education programs to improve the attitude and recognition about the elderly of elementary school students.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the use of calculators in elementary school mathematics education. For this purpose, we established the subject matters of the research as folloows; (1) to develop the lesson plan and the students' activity sheet related to the use of calculators. (2) to analyze the effects of the use of calculators when we applied the materials developed. Four classes of sixth grade students were sampled two elementary schools in D city. Two of them were assigned to the calculator group and the others to traditional group. The experiment was conducted for 10 class times. Two kinds of test instruments were used: pretest and post test. The pretest scores guaranteed that both groups were homogeneous. Post-test was used to identify the effect of use of calculator and the post-test scores were analyzed by t-test. We also used questionnaire to identify the students' change of attitude toward mathematics. The results of this study as fellows: (1) The calculator group got scores significantly higher than the traditional group on the test. (2) The students' attitude in calculator group was changed a little positively.
The purpose of this study was to develop MBL(Microcomputer Based Laboratory) programs for sixth-grade elementary students in science laboratory instructions and to ascertain the effects of this program on academic achievement and science-related affective characteristics. In laboratory instructions, using the MBL was found to be effective in improving academic achievement for elementary students, especially in the domain of knowledge. In addition, it helped students to improve science-related affective characteristics. The experimental group showed higher levels, especially in the domains of cognition and interest. When our findings were analyzed in detail, the sub-domains that showed positive effects included 'cognition of science' in the domain of cognition, and interest toward science', 'interest toward science learning', 'interest toward science related activities', and 'anxiety for science' in the domain of interest. Male students exhibited improvement in the domain of cognition while female students showed improvement in the domain of interest. In conclusion, utilizing MBL programs as an experimental measurement in the real field of elementary science education can be said to be both positive and desirable.
This study examined the influence of bullying victimization on reactive aggression among upper elementary school students, and the mediating effect of victim justice sensitivity on the relationship between such victimization and aggression. It also investigated whether negative urgency moderates the influence of bullying victimization on reactive aggression. The participants were a group of 262 children (114 boys and 148 girls) who were fourth to sixth-grade students from 10 elementary schools located in Seoul, Gyeong-gi, and Daegu. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and SPSS Process Macro Model 5. The results were as follows: First, victim justice sensitivity mediated the influence of bullying victimization on reactive aggression among upper elementary school students. Second, negative urgency moderated the effect of bullying victimization on reactive aggression, whereas the impact of this was greater when the level of negative urgency was high. The results suggest that reactive aggression among upper elementary school students could be effectively decreased by preventing bullying victimization, and reducing the level of victim justice sensitivity and negative urgency.
The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary school students' personality, scientific attitude and to find the correlation between elementary school students' personality and scientific attitude. To determine this, the distribution of sixth graders' personality and scientific attitude was examined and correlation between the lower categories of each one was analyzed. The test tools and the subject were decided through the two preliminary examination, personality test and scientific attitude test were investigated appling to a total of 354 sixth-grade students at eight elementary schools in this study. The test results were analyzed with averages, standard deviations, correlations, ANOVA using SPSS/PC/sup +/. The major results of analysis are as follows. First, the distribution of scientific attitude proved that the average of boys' curiosity was higher than that of girls' curiosity, but girls' average was higher than boys' average in criticalness property, cooperation property, preparation property, continuation property and patience property. The distribution of upper group and lower group in personality properties revealed that the ratio of upper group was higher than that of lower group in activity property, social property, but the ratio of lower group was higher than that of upper group in responsibility and reflective property. Second, the socio-populational variables affecting 6th graders' personality' and science attitude were a sex, a sibling order. The cognition variables affecting 6th graders' personality and science attitude were preference, extent of usability to practical life and interest of science. Third, analyzing the correlation between lower categories of personality and lower categories of science attitude revealed that activity property of personality rather highly correlated to willingness property, critical property at .399(p<.01), .351(p<.01) respectively. and that consideration property of personality highly correlated to curiosity, critical property at .451 (p<.01), .415(p<.01) respectively.
The purpose of this study is to guide and apply gettable and accessible materials around everyday life into classroom instruction, and to find out their effects on student academic achievement. In order to achieve it, this study was tried to develop and guide available materials around life in teaming activities, to provide a preliminary assignment that could apply the available materials, and to compare its academic achievement to one from field trip loaming. For the hypothesis testing, first, the experimental and comparing classes were selected based on the results of basic learning diagnostic evaluation, which conducted by the researcher being served as a full-time science teacher of the third and sixth grade of K elementary school in Kwangju for 2 years. Secondly, the instructional use of the available materials around life was applied to the experimental class. Also, the instructional use of the existing materials was applied to the comparing class. Finally, for the testing of the effects on academic achievement, the posterio test was implemented after conducting the experimental instruction in knowledge·understanding, inquiry process, and attitude domains classified by the unit characteristics. Using SPSS/WIN program the t-test was performed in order to compare the differences between the two groups. Major findings were as follows: 1) In the achievement test of knowledge·understanding domain, there were no significant differences at the 5% level between the experimental and comparing classes. It could be difficult to say, therefore, that the instructional use of the available materials around life was more effective than the instructional use of the existing materials. However, it had some effects on differences between the third grade final achievement test and sixth grade experimental class. 2) In the achievement test of inquiry process domain, there were some significant differences in that the sixth grade experimental class was higher than the third grade out-of classroom experience unit. It was indicated that the instructional use of the available materials around life had some effects on improving the students' inquiry ability 3) In achievement test of attitude domain, there were some significant differences. It was shown that the self-evaluation test of the sixth grade experimental class unit was higher than that of the third grade out-of classroom experience unit; Especially, the learning activities in the experimental class were more active, and the experimental practice ability was improved. It was presented that the instructional use of the available materials around life had some effects on the students' academic achievement in attitude domain. It was concluded from this study that the instructional use of the available materials around life was less effective on Knowledge understanding domain, but was effective on improving their scientific inquiry ability and interest on science education.
