A Study on Improvement of Fracture Toughness of $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$Composites ($\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ 복합체의 파괴인성 증진연구)

  • The effect of AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$additives on fracture toughness of $\beta$-SiC-ZrB$_2$composites by hot-pressed sintering were Investigated. The $\beta$-SiC-ZrB$_2$ ceramic composites were hot-presse sintered and annealed by adding 1, 2, 3wt% AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$(6:4wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at 195$0^{\circ}C$ for 4h. In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta$-SiC and ZrB$_2$, and the relative density Is over 90.79% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$ contents. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed the highest of 5.5328MPa . m$^{1}$2/ for composites added with 2wt% AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$ additives at room temperature. But the standard deviation of fracture toughness of specimens decreased with increasing AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$ contents and showed the highest of 0.8624 for composite tilth 1wt%, AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$additives.

Varistor Characteristics of $ZnO-Pr_6/O_{11}-CoO-Er_2O_3$-Based Ceramics ($ZnO-Pr_6/O_{11}-CoO-Er_2O_3$계 세라믹스의 바리스터 특성)

  • The varistor characteristics of $ZnO-Pr_6O_11-CoO-Er_2O_3$-based ceramics were investigated. $ZnO-Pr_6O_11-CoO-Er_2O_3$-based ceramics were sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1350^{\circ}C$in the addition range 0.0~2.0mol% $Er_2O_3$, respectively. $ZnO-Pr_6O_11-CoO-Er_2O_3$-based ceramics, which are added with 0.5mol% $Er_2O_3$ at $1300^{\circ}C$ and l.Omol% $Er_2O_3$ at $1350^{\circ}C$ sintering temperature, exhibited the bestexcellent varistor characteristics, namely, the nonlinear exponent was better 52.78 at $1300^{\circ}C$ thanat 13$1350^{\circ}C$ and the leakage current was better 6.57$\mu\textrm$A at $1350^{\circ}C$ than at $1300^{\circ}C$. Consequently, it is estimated that $ZnO-Pr_6O_11-CoO-Er_2O_3$-based ceramics, which $Er_2O_3$ is added in the range 0.5~l.Omol% will begin to be used as a predominant basic composition of $PR_6O_11$-based ZnO varistors.

  • 13Cr-1.5Nb-Fe alloy powder prepared by water atomizing method is reduced with flowing hydrogen gas. The characteristics of a reduced alloy powder is investigated and magnetic cores formed by using the reduction power sintered in the vacuum of ∼10$\^$-5/ Torr. In order to study on the magnetic cores permeability and power loss in alternating magnetic field are also measured. The result of particle size distribution shows the paticle size is 70 ㎛ at volume fraction of 50 %. The saturation magnetization of the reduced alloy powder is 160 emu/g. The relative peak permeability (H$\_$a/=5Oe) of a magnetic core is 400 and the power loss (B$\_$m/=80G) 0.12 mW/cc at sintering temperature of 1,200 $\^{C}$, 10 ton/㎠ forming pressure, and 1 kHz.

  • $Mo_xW_{1-x}Si_2$ heaters were fabricated by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process and post sintering process. To validate the reliability of the $Mo_xW_{1-x}Si_2$ heaters, the accelerated life test (ALT) was conducted, and then lifetime to $Mo_xW_{1-x}Si_2$ heaters was estimated by using Minitab programs. Also, the failure analysis of $Mo_xW_{1-x}Si_2$ heaters after ALT was performed through electrical and structural properties. As the results, it was confirmed that the dominant failure mode of $Mo_xW_{1-x}Si_2$ heaters is the crack formation in heaters and the delamination of protective $SiO_2$ layers.

Densification Behavior of W-20wt.% Cu Composite Materials Fabricated by Mechanical Alloying Method (기계적합금화법에 의해 제조된 W-20wt.%Cu복합재의 치밀화 거동)

  • W-Cu composites utilize the high electrical conductivity of copper and arc erosion resistance of tungsten to provide properties better suited to electrical contact applications than either tungsten or copper alone. W-Cu composite materials were milled in an attritor with an impeller speed of 300rpm for various milling times. The milled powders were compacted at 300MPa into cylinders, 16m in diameter, and approximately 4m high. Sintering was performed in dry H$_2$at temperature ranging from 1200$^{\circ}C$ to 1400$^{\circ}C$. Samples were sectioned and were polished for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of microstructures. Homogeneous W-Cu composites were formed after 10 hours mechanical alloying and could be attained 99% density at 1330$^{\circ}C$. As mechanical alloying time increased, Fe-concentration was increased linearly. Intermetallic compound formation interupted the growth of W particles Increased hardness.

  • This study has been investigated on the milling of Aluminium Distearate (ADS) powder and characteristics of the ADS-doped UO2 pellets. As-received ADS powder of the agglomerated particles has not shown any milling effect because of heat generated during planetary milling. But the use of coolant to effectively remove heat generated during milling has been found an effective way in breaking up the agglomerates of ADS powder. The green density of the UO2 pellet decreases with the amount of ADS powder doped. Therefore, in order to get the sintered density of 95% pellet decreases with the amount of ADS powder doped. Therefore, in order to get the sintered density of 95% theoretical density, the 200 ppm ADS-doped UO2 pellet has to be pressed under higher compacting pressure of 3500~4000 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ compared with the ADS-undoped UO2 pellet pressed under around 3000 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The ADS-dpoed UO2 pellet with even relatively low sintered density of 10.27 g/㎤ exhibits open porosity of 1% while open porosity of the ADS-undoped UO2 pellet is reduced to around 1% only after its sintered density increases to 10.43g/㎤. It is, therefore, concluded that doping of ADS powder significantly contributes to the decrease in open porosity of the UO2 pellet. The dilatometry of the ADS doped UO2 pellet shows the sintering rate curve with the bimodal mode, which could be attributed to a phase reaction between UO2 and ADS. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that there occurs not any new phase formed but the shift of the peaks. It would be expected that a phase reaction resulting in solid solution would happen in the temperature range of 130$0^{\circ}C$ to 150$0^{\circ}C$ between UO2 and ADS.

Preparation of Porous Ceramics Sound Absorbent Material Using Sewage Sludge Slag (하수슬러지 슬래그를 이용한 다공성 세라믹스 흡음재료 제조)

  • The effects of content and particle size of sewage sludge slag on the sound absorption was investigated and the physical$.$mechanical properties of porous ceramics for sound absorbent material was studied. The physical$.$mechanical properties of specimens have depended on sintering temperature and slag content without particle size effect of slag. As water glass content increase and particle size of slag decrease at the same slag content, physical$.$mechanical properties of them have been improved. The bulk density and compressive strength of specimens with the batch composition of 77∼89 wt% of slag content and particles with 1∼3 mm, and sintered at 1,050$^{\circ}C$ for 2 h were 1.48∼1.71 and 86∼163 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The specimens with 1∼3 mm and <1 mm of particles size showed good sound absorption property at low frequency and high frequency region. With increasing thickness of specimens, sound absorption properties at low frequency region were increased.

Sintering Behavior of Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) Ceramics Prepared by Precipitation Method (침전법으로 제조한 Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3)계 세라믹스의 소결거동)

  • Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(series A) were prepared by mixing Al2O3 powder obtained by single precipitation method with ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) powder obtained by co-predipitation method. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites (series B) were prepared by co-precipitation method using the three starting materials. In all cases, the composition was controlled as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). The composites of series A showed higher final relative densities than those of series B and tetagonal ZrO2 in all cases was retained to about 95% at room temperature. ZrO2 particles were coalesced more rapidly in grain boundary of Al2O3 than within Al2O3 grain. ZrO2 particles were located at 3-and 4-grain junction of Al2O3 and limited the grain growth of Al2O3. It was observed that MgO contributed to densification of Al2O3 but limited grain growth of Al2O3 by MgO was not remarkable. In all Al2O3/ZrO2 composites, exaggerated grain growth of Al2O3 was not observed and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were found to have homogeneous microstructures.

  • Ferroelectric S $r_{0.9}$B $i_{2.1}$T $a_{1.8}$N $b_{0.2}$ thin films with 200 nm thicknesses were deposited on Pt/Ti $O_2$/ $SiO_2$/Si Substrates by a sol-gel method. In these experiments, Sr(O $C_2$ $H_{5}$)$_2$, Bi(TMHD)$_3$, Ta(O $C_2$ $H_{5}$)$_{5}$ and Nb(O $C_2$ $H_{5}$)$_{5}$ were used as precursors, which were dissolved in 2-methoxyethanol. After UV-irradiation and RTA processes, the remanent polarization value (2 $P_{r}$) of SBTN thin films with annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ was 8.49 and 11.94 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 3 V and 5 V, respectively.

Nd1+XBa2-XCu3O7-δ Bulk Superconductor by Zone-melt Process

  • Two kinds of $Nd_{1+X}Ba_{2-X}Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$, the sintering samples and zone melting samples, were heat-treated under pure Ar at 950$^{circ}C$. The substitution of Nd ion for Ba ion in the $Nd_{1+X}Ba_{2-X}Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ before and after the heat treatment was investigated by XRD. In order to confirm the effects of the heat treatment, the Tc and Jc of samples with/without the heat treatment under Ar were comparatively studied. $Nd_{1+X}Ba_{2-X}Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ samples were oxygenated under pure oxygen at $300^{circ}C$. From the XRD pattern it was found that the sample with x<0.4 was transferred from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase after the oxygenation, while the sample with x>0.4 did not show the phase transition even after a long time oxygenation. Therefore, the low oxygen partial pressure (Ar+1 % O$_2$) was used for the ambient atmosphere of the zone-melting samples, which could reduce the melting temperature and depress the substitution of Nd for Ba. After the improvement in the zone-melting process, the Jc value was increased to 2 x $10^4$A/$cm^2$ (0 T, 78 K). The particle orientation and the structure of zone-melted NdBaCuO were studied by the XRD and SEM analysis.
