Interlocked armor layers of unbonded flexible risers may crush when risers are being launched. In order to predict the behavior of interlocked armor layers, they are usually simplified as rings with geometric and contact nonlinearity ignored in the open-literature. However, the equivalent thickness of the interlocked armor layer has not been addressed yet. In the present paper, a geometric coefficient ${\gamma}$ is introduced to the equivalent stiffness method, and a linear relationship between ${\gamma}$ and geometric parameters of interlocked armor layers is validated by analytical and finite element models. Radial stiffness and equivalent thickness of interlocked armor layers are compared with experiments and different equivalent methods, which show that the present method has a higher accuracy. Furthermore, hoop stress distribution of interlocked armor layer under crushing is predicted, which indicates the interlocked armor layer can be divided into two compression and two expansion zones by four symmetrically distributed singular points.

The p-convergent boundary element method has been proposed to analyze two-dimensional potential problem on the basis of high order Legendre shape functions that have different property comparing with the shape functions in conventional boundary element method. The location of nodes corresponding to high order shape function are not defined along the boundary, called by nodeless node, similar to the p-convergent finite element method. As the order of shape function increases, the collocation point method is used to solve linear simultaneous equations. The collocation patterns of p-convergent boundary element method consist of non-symmetric hierarchial or symmetric non-hierarchical. As the order of shape function increases, the number of collocation point increases. The singular integral that appears in p-convergent boundary element has been calculated by special numeric quadrature technique and semi-analytical integration technique. The L-shape domain problem including singularity in the vicinity of reentrant comer is analyzed and the numerical results show that the relative error is smaller than $10^{-2}%$ range as compared with other results in literatures. In case of same condition, the symmetric p-collocation point pattern shows high accuracy of solution.

This paper presents a subspace system identification for estimating the stiffness matrix and flexural rigidities of a shear building. System matrices are estimated by LQ decomposition and singular value decomposition from an input-output Hankel matrix. The estimated system matrices are converted into a real coordinate through similarity transformation, and the stiffness matrix is estimated from the system matrices. The accuracy and the stability of an estimated stiffness matrix depend on the size of the associated Hankel matrix. The estimation error curve of the stiffness matrix is obtained with respect to the size of a Hankel matrix using a prior finite element model of a shear building. The sizes of the Hankel matrix, which are consistent with a target accuracy level, are chosen through this curve. Among these candidate sizes of the Hankel matrix, more proper one can be determined considering the computational cost of subspace identification. The stiffness matrix and flexural rigidities are estimated using the Hankel matrix with the candidate sizes. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through the numerical example of a five-story shear building model with and without damage.

The finite element method(FEM) has been commonly used for structural dynamic analysis. However, the direct global application of FEM to large complex structures such as ships and offshore structures requires considerable computational efforts, and remarkably more in structural dynamic optimization problems. Adoption of the component-mode synthesis method is an efficient means to overcome the above difficulty. Among three classes of the component-mode synthesis method, the free-interface mode method is recognized to have the advantages of better computational efficiency and easier implementation of substructures' experimental results, but the disadvantage of lower accuracy in analytical results. In this paper, an advanced method to improve the accuracy in the application of the free-interface mode method for the vibration analysis of large complex structures is presented. In order to compensate the truncation effect of the higher modes of substructures in the synthesis process, both residual inertia and stiffness effects are taken into account and a frequency shifting technique is introduced in the formulation of the residual compliance of substructures. The introduction of the frequency shrift ins not only excludes cumbersome manipulation of singular matrices for semi-definite substructural systems but gives more accurate results around the specified shifting frequency. Numerical examples of typical structural models including a ship-like two dimensional finite element model show that the analysis results based on the presented method are well competitive in accuracy with those obtained by the direst global FEM analysis for the frequencies which are lower than the highest one employed in the synthesis with remarkably higher computational efficiency and that the presented method is more efficient and accurate than the fixed-interface mode method.

In order to predict structural vibration and radiated noise of high-voltage transformer in operation, it is necessary to precisely find the excitation force generated by the coils and core. However, finding the excitation force through experiments of high voltage transformer in operation is not possible. Therefore, this paper deals with identifying the excitation force by using the acceleration data measured through experiments and the transfer function estimated through finite element model. A method to predict structural vibration and radiated noise was also proposed. Three-phase windings and the core are the source of high-voltage transformer. The excitation forces were identified using the acceleration data and the transfer function of the surface of the tank. Structural vibration and radiated noise from the surface of the tank was predicted by using the identified excitation force. As a result of the interpretation of the experimental and computational analysis of structural vibration from the surface of the tank and radiated noise from the field point, the interpretation of the computational analysis showed relatively good accordance with the experiment.

In the shape optimal design based on h-version of FEM, the ideal mesh for the initial geometry most probably will not be suitable for the final analysis. Thus, it is necessary to remesh the geometry of the model at each stage of optimization. However, the p-version of FEM appears to be a very attractive alternative for use in shape optimization. The main advantages are as follows; firstly, the elements are not sensitive to distortion for interpolation polynomials of order $p{\geq}3$; secondly, even singular problems can be solved more efficiently with p-version than with the h-version by proper mesh design; thirdly, the initial mesh design are identical. The 2-D p-version model for shape optimization is presented on the basis of Bezier's curve fitting, gradient projection method, and integrals of Legendre polynomials. The numerical results are performed by p-version software RASNA.
Based on the shaking table tests of a 1:3.52 scale one-bay and one-story ancient wooden structure, a simplified structural mechanics model was established, and the structural state equation and observation equation were deduced. Under the action of seismic waves, the damage rule of initial stiffness and yield stiffness of the joint was obtained. The force hammer percussion test and finite element calculations were carried out, and the structural response was obtained. Considering the 5% noise disturbance in the laboratory environment, the stiffness parameters of the mortise-tenon joint were identified by the partial least squares of singular value decomposition (PLS-SVD) and the Extended Kalman filter (EKF) method. The results show that dynamic and static cohesion method, PLS-SVD, and EKF method can be used to identify the damage degree of structures, and the stiffness of the mortise-tenon joints under strong earthquakes is reduced step by step. Using the proposed model, the identified error of the initial stiffness is about 0.58%-1.28%, and the error of the yield stiffness is about 0.44%-1.21%. This method has high accuracy and good applicability for identifying the initial stiffness and yield stiffness of the joints. The identification method and research results can provide a reference for monitoring and evaluating actual engineering structures.
The study presents the earthquake performance of the Bosphorus Bridge under multi-point earthquake excitation considering the spatially varying site-specific earthquake motions. The elaborate FE model of the bridge is firstly established depending on the new considerations of the used FEM software specifications, such as cable-sag effect, rigid link and gap elements. The modal analysis showed that singular modes of the deck and the tower were relatively effective in the dynamic behavior of the bridge due to higher total mass participation mass ratio of 80%. The parameters and requirements to be considered in simulation process are determined to generate the spatially varying site-specific ground motions. Total number of twelve simulated ground motions are defined for the multi-support earthquake analysis (Mp-sup). In order to easily implement multi-point earthquake excitation to the bridge, the practice-oriented procedure is summarized. The results demonstrated that the Mp-sup led to high increase in sectional forces of the critical components of the bridge, especially tower base section and tensile force of the main and back stay cables. A close relationship between the dynamic response and the behavior of the bridge under the Mp-sup was also obtained. Consequently, the outcomes from this study underscored the importance of the utilization of the multi-point earthquake analysis and the necessity of considering specifically generated earthquake motions for suspension bridges.

The rotor blade is modeled using a composite box beam with arbitrary wall. The active constrained damping layers are bonded to the upper and lower surfaces of the box beam to provide active and passive damping. A finite element model, based on a hybrid displacement theory, is used in the structural analysis. The theory is capable of accurately capturing the transverse shear effects in the composite primary structure, the viscoelastic and the piezoelectric layers within the ACLs. A reduced order model is derived based on the Hankel singular value. A linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller is designed based on the reduced order model and the available measurement output. However, the LQG control system fails to stabilize the perturbed system although it shows good control performance at the nominal operating condition. To improve the robust stability of LQG controller, the loop transfer recovery (LTR) method is applied. Numerical results show that the proposed controller significantly improves rotor aeromechanical stability and suppresses rotor response over large variations in rotating speed by increasing lead-lag modal damping in the coupled rotor-body system.

A method, which uses analytical or numerical modal analysis results, e.g. from finite element analysis, to select desirable response measurement and excitation points for an efficient modal testing is introduced. First, points of master degree of freedom(DOP) are determined so as to statistically minimize errors between responses of a full order model and those estimated from the reduced order model. Such master DOF's are selected as the response measurement points. Then a criterion named 'driving point model constant(DPMC)' related to the magnitudes of resonance peaks of the driving point freqency response functions used to select the point of excitation out of the master DOF's. In this work, the method is demonstrated through applications to modal testing on a one dimensional cantilever beam and an aluminum plate and the results are compared with those by another technique. also, the method is applied to a two dimensional structural component of a passenger car.
