  • In the present study, a towed underwater particle image velocimetry (PIV) system was validated in uniform flow and used to investigate the free-surface effects on the turbulent wake of a simple surface-piercing body. The selected test model was a cylindrical geometry formed by extruding the Wigley hull's waterplane shape in the vertical direction. Due to the constraints of the two-dimensional (2D) PIV system used for the present study, the velocity field measurements were done separately for the vertical and horizontal planes. Using the measured data at several different locations, it was possible to identify the free-surface effects on the turbulent wake in terms of the mean velocity components and turbulence quantities. In order to provide an accuracy level of the data, uncertainty assessment was done following the International Towing Tank Conference standard procedure.

  • In this paper, a two-phase flow solver $HiFoam^{(R)}$ has been developed based on the $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ to predict resistance of a ship in calm water. The VOF method of $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ was reviewed and a simple flux limiter was introduced to enhance the robustness of the solver. The procedure for predicting ship motion was modified by introducing Quasi-Steady Fluid-Body Interaction (QS-FBI) with least square regression to improve the efficiency. Other minor factors were considered as well in terms of the efficiency and robustness. The HiFoam was applied to KCS and JBC simulations to validate its efficiency and accuracy by comparing the results to experimental data and STAR-CCM+. The $HiFoam^{(R)}$ was also applied to various ships and it showed good agreements to the experimental data.

  • Coupling rubber pad are important components in railway vehicles. It can be used for reduce shock, vibration and noise. Simple tension, equi-biaxial tension and pure shear test were performed to acquire the coefficient of rubber material which were Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden model. The finite element analysis was executed to evaluate the behavior of deformation and stress distribution by using the commercial finite element analysis code. Useful life evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. In this paper, useful life prediction of rubber pad for railway vehicle were experimentally investigated. Accelerated heat-aging test for rubber material were carried. Compression set results changes as the threshold are used for assessment of the useful life and time to threshold value were plotted against reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot.

  • A series of pyrimidine annulated dihydropyrano[2, 3-c]pyrazole derivatives were synthesized and screened for their antimicrobial activity. The precursor, dihydropyrano[2, 3-c]pyrazole was synthesised under catalyst free condition using PEG-400 as reaction medium which facilitated improved yield compared to base catalyzed reaction. Wide scope of substrates, simple workup procedure and high yield even in the absence of catalyst are the major highlights of the protocol. Dihydropyrano[2, 3-c]pyrazoles on condensation with formic acid formed pyrimidine annulated dihydropyrano[2, 3-c]pyrazole derivatives. All the products are characterized using FTIR, $^1H-NMR$ and $^{13}C-NMR$ spectroscopic techniques. The molecules have shown good to moderate activity as antimicrobial agents when compared to the standard drug ciprofloxacin.

  • Elastic and in-elastic buckling stress analyses are executed by the semi-analytical finite strip method to study the effect of the longitudinal stiffener on the web of box girders. The simple analysis procedure is based on the assumption that the vertical stiffeners has the rigidity enough to force nil deflection line on the web panel so that the boundary condition may be regarded as a hinge. The provisions on the longitudinal stiffeners in plate girders of the Korean Standard Highway Bridge Specifications(1992) are investigated through comparison with the results obtained for various web stiffener size of box girders of the medium span length bridges.

  • The dental hygiene process of care is a model for providing integrated dental hygiene care. It was developed by Mueller-Joseph and Petersen in 1995. The purpose of the dental hygiene process is to provide a framework within which the individualized needs of the client can be met. This model enables the dental hygienist to focus on patient need. The process is composed of five components: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. The process of dental hygiene has to move from simple clinical procedure to comprehensive and systemic dental hygiene care. The dental hygiene diagnostic model broadens the biomedical dental model to the behavioral model to include health behavior and health function of individuals. The dental hygiene process will provide a mechanism to develop dental hygienist's role and scope of practice in Korea.

  • In this paper, through the study of discrete implementation of time delay control (TDC) and PID control algorithm, a new systematic gain selection method for PID controller is proposed. An important advantage of this method is that it may be applied to real systems with very simple and systematic procedure. The proposed method is derived for SISO systems and then extended to MIMO system. Through simulation for the second order non-linear plant and experiment on 2-DOF robot, the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed. The proposed method could solve the problem of difficulty in gain tuning of existing PID controller.

  • A mixed degree finite element solutions using hierarchical elements are investigated for convergences on a 2-D simple cases. Elements are generated block by block and each block is assigned an arbitrary solution degree. The numerical study showed that a well constructed blocks can increase the convergence and accuracy of finite element solutions. Also, it has been found that for higher order elements, the convergence trends can be deteriorated for smaller mesh sizes. A procedure for a variable fixed boundary condition has been included.

  • This study is concerned with a problem of determining the optimal requirements level of the spare parts, especially Concurrent Spare Parts(CSP). CSP is supplied with the procurement of new equipment system, and is used to sustain the equipment without resupply during the initial coverage period. We consider this situation as a multiechelon inventory model with several bases and one depot. And we assume a equipment system which consists of many types of parts would grounded if one of the parts fail. Also this multiechelon CSP problem is considering a time-varing (dynamic) environment. We develop a computational procedure to find the optimal number of spare parts minimizing the total expected cost, while achieving the required system availability. Finally we present a simple example of suggested method.

  • This paper is concerned with a six sigma application to non-manufacturing process. Based on the comparison to manufacturing process, non-manufacturing process has some specific characteristics. The main focus of this study is to introduce an empirical case study on the implementation of DMAIC procedures for non-manufacturing process. We use a simple and practical road map which consists of 13 steps. Some fundamental rules for DMAIC implementation in six sigma projects are also introduced.
