  • Ammonia ($NH_3$) volatilization from a silty clay loam paddy soil applied with non, straight urea, and coated urea, respectively, under transplanting in Milyang, Korea from 2002 and 2003 was simulated by a Water and Nitrogen Management Model (WNMM). Based on the data from the in-situ measurements, $NH_3$ volatilization during the rice growth was 6.04% and 1.46% of the applied nitrogen (N) from straight urea and coated urea, respectively. The bulk aerodynamic approach in WNMM satisfactorily predicted the difference in $NH_3$ loss during the given rice growing seasons from the two urea fertilizers. $R^2$ for the correlation between the predicted and observed NH3 loss during the calibration year (2002) was 0.53 less than 0.68 of the application year (2003). This difference could be due to the weather condition such as heavy rainfall and temperature during the calibration year.

  • The shortage of bearing capacity and settlement, shear deformation may occur when constructing a structure such as harbor, airport and bridge on soft ground such as marine clay, silty clay, sandy soil because it is very soft. The various ground improvement methods were applied to obtain preceding settlement of soft ground and strength increase. The vertical drain method has been used to reduce the required time for consolidation of the soft ground. Especially, the PBD (Plastic Board Drain) has been widely used among in the vertical drain method. In this study, a behavior of characteristic was evaluated by operating a compound drainage capacity test about the PBD (Plastic Board Drain) method applied in soft clay in deep depth. As a result, the settlement gradually occurred with increase of surface load. The consolidation settlement was processed with dissipation of pore pressure after surface load of $500kN/m^2$. Accordingly, it was found that change of settlement through load steps was resulted from dissipation of pore pressure. It was also found that the drainage capacity of vertical drains was considerably reduced with pressure increase and time elapse.

  • This study aims at evaluating the engineering properties of very poor graded fine sands deposited on the sea. Using materials sampled at SAEMANKEUM area, a series of rowe cell consolidation tests and triaxial compression tests are conducted in order to evaluate the characteristics of deformation and shear strength by the relative density. Prior to those tests, a maximum and a minimum relative densities are obtained. As a result, it appears that the minimum void ratio is 0.88, and the maximum compactible relative density is about 71%. In addition, internal frictional angle appears to increase linearly with an increase of the relative density which is similar to that of the port KUNJANG.

  • The land reclamation area of Saemangeum(Kunsan) is located between 126$^{\circ}$10' E~126$^{\circ}$50' E and 35$^{\circ}$35' N~356$^{\circ}$05'N at the western coast of the Korean peninsula. The are many small islands including extensive areas of semi-diurnally flooded and dewatered tidal flats. The reclamation area of Saemangeum has a range of 5.6m spring tide and the maximum tidal current speed is about 1.41m s-1 in ordinary spring tide. Most of the sediments deposited on the tidal flats are transported from the Geum river, the Manjyung river and The Dongjin river. The soil in this area consists of silty sand with the depth of 10m to 30m . The wind in winter is strong from the direction of northwest. In the past twenty years, land reclamation projects for agricutural purpose or industrial cocmplex have been mostly implemented along the western coast of Korea. Saemangeum coastal area is being constructed the33km sea dike and 40, 100ha reclamation area. The purpose of this study is to find the residual circulations in four seasons after the dike construction by a robust diagnostic and prognostic numerical model. Heat flux at the sea surface in January ,May , August , October was asopted on the basis on the daily inflow of solar radiation at the earth surface, assuming an average atomospheric transmission and no clouds , as a function of latitude and time of year(George L.P.J.E William, 1990). The discharge from the Geum , the Mankyung and the Dongjin rivers was adopted on the basis of experience formula of river flow in January , May ,August, October (The M. of C.Korea, 1993) . Water temperature and salinity along the open boundaries are obtained from the results of field observation s.

  • This study was made to find several significant relations among various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance. The alluvial clay samples were taken at the Daebul Reclaimed Tideland in Samhomyeon, Yeongamgun, Jeonranamdo. The results of the study are summarized as follows; 1.Most samples belong to medium or high plastic, inorganic, silty clay(clay contents;32-64%, silt contents; 36-68%, sand contents; 0-3%). The specific gravities range from 2.70 to 2.73, the unit weights from 1.45 to 1. 75g/cm$^3$, the natural moisture contents from 45 to 77%, the liquid limits from 32 to 56%. It is certain that the foundation is weak because the natural moisture contents are much higher than the liquid limits. 2.It is known from the shear tests that the unconfined compression strenghs vary from 0.09 to 0. 38kg/cm2, the cohesions from 0.05 to 0. 21kg/cm2, the internal friction angles from 0 to 3˚. 3.The consolidation tests show that the initial void ratios range from 1.25 to 2.28, the compression indeices from 0.43 to 0.84, the preconsolidation loads from 0.21 to 0.74kg/cm$^2$. 4.Cone penetration resistances are usually less than 5kg/cm$^2$ from ground surface to the depth of about 8m, and from S to l0kg/cm$^2$ in the layer below about 8m to hard layer. 5.The cohesion and cone penetration resistance are in proportion to the depth of soil layer. 6.The correlations between various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance for the alluvial clay samples are as follows; a) Wn=0.944C+ l2.733 (r=0.829) b) LL=0. 728Cy+6. 991 (r=0. 873) c) PI=0.659Cy-8.168 (r=0.860) d) rt=0. 0077(272-Wn) =2.092-0. 0077Wn (r=0. 859) e) 60=0. 035wn-0 447 (r=0. 893) f) C=0.380qw+0.031 (r=0.816) g) qu=0.0707qc+0.029 (r=0.810) h) C=0.018Z+0.055 (r=O.802) I) qc=0. 415Z+1, 438 (r=0. 943)

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the consumptive use of irrigated water for calculation of duty water in paddy rice. Tall statured Japonica rice varieties, Nongbaek (early), Jinheung (medium) and Akibare (late), and short statured Tongil typed varieties, Josaeng Tongil(early), Suweon 264 (medium) and Suweon 258(late) were planted on the experimental farm of Kon-Kuk University in 1979. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. During the experimental period, the daily mean temperature was almost similar, the relative humidity was higher as much as 2.8%, the amount of rain fall was 100mm less and the pan evaporation was 70mm less compared with those of 30 years average, respectively. 2. The paddy soil was silty loam, which was suitable for the rice cultivation. 3. Varietal differences were find out for plant height, culm length, number of tillers, number of panicles, heading date, matured grain ratio, 1000-grain weight and rough rice yield. This difference might he the cause of varietal difference of the consumptive use of irrigated water during the rice growing period. 4. The evapotranspiration was gradually increased after transplanting and showed the peak from booting to heading stage of rice varieties. The average evapotranspiration through the whole growing period was 5.67-5. 80mm/day for tall statured Japonica varieties, and 5.99-6. 39mm/day for short statured Tongil typed varieties. 5. The ratio of evapotranspiration to pan-evaporation through the whole growing period was 1.49-1.50 for Japonica varieties, and 1.60-1.66 for Tongil typed varies. 6. Average amount of percolation in paddy field was 3. 62mm/day through the whole growing period of rice plant. 7. K-value in Blaney & Criddle formula was 0.94-0.98 for Japonica varieties and 1.02-1.08 for Tongil typed varieties, and coefficient consumptive water use (Kc-value) was 0.95-1.02 for Japonica varieties and 1.04-1.12 for Tongil typed varieties in this study. The modified coefficient for consumptive water use, which was calculated from data collected through the country including this study, was as follows;

  • Recently, a new seismic probe, called "MudFork", has been developed and can be utilized for accurate and easy measurements of shear wave velocities of cohesive soils. To expand its use to estimate undrained shear strength and density, a preliminary investigation to correlate these properties with shear wave velocity was attempted. Cone penetration tests and a seismic test, using MudFork, were performed at a silty soil site near Incheon, Korea. Also, undisturbed samples were obtained using thin-wall tube samplers, and the shear wave velocities and undrained shear strengths of the samples were measured in the laboratory. A simple linear relationship between shear strength and shear wave velocity was obtained, and a tentative relationship between density and shear wave velocity was also defined.

  • This study was attempted to find out the value of cultural assets through the clear diagnosis and prescription of the dead and weakness factors of the Population of Retusa Fringe Trees in Pyeongji-ri, Jinan(Natural Monument No. 214), The results are as follows. First, Since the designation of 13 natural monuments in 1968, since 1973, many years have passed since then. In particular, despite the removal of some of the buried soil during the maintenance process, such as retreating from the fence of the primary school after 2010, Second, The first and third surviving tree of the designated trees also have many branches that are dead, the leaves are dull, and the amount of leaves is small. vitality of tree is 'extremely bad', and the first branch has already been faded by a large number of branches, and the amount of leaves is considerably low this year, so that only two flowers are bloomed. The second is also in a 'bad'state, with small leaves, low leaf density, and deformed water. The largest number 1 in the world is added to the concern that the s coverd oil is assumed to be paddy soils. Third, It is found that the composition ratio of silt is high because it is known as '[silty loam(SiL)]'. In addition, the pH of the northern soil at pH 1 was 6.6, which was significantly different from that of the other soil. In addition, the organic matter content was higher than the appropriate range, which is considered to reflect the result of continuous application for protection management. Fourth, It is considered that the root cause of failure and growth of Jinan pyeongji-ri Population of Retusa Fringe Trees group is chronic syndrome of serious menstrual deterioration due to covered soil. This can also be attributed to the newly planted succession and to some of the deaths. Fifthly, It is urgent to gradually remove the subsoil part, which is estimated to be the cause of the initial damage. Above all, it is almost impossible to remove the coverd soil after grasping the details of the soil, such as clayey soil, which is buried in the rootstock. After removal of the coverd soil, a pestle is installed to improve the respiration of the roots and the ground with Masato. And the dead 4th dead wood and the 5th and 6th dead wood are the best, and the lower layer vegetation is mown. The viable neck should be removed from the upper surface, and the bark defect should undergo surgery and induce the development of blindness by vestibule below the growth point. Sixth, The underground roots should be identified to prepare a method to improve the decompression of the root and the respiration of the soil. It is induced by the shortening of rotten roots by tracing the first half of the rootstock to induce the generation of new roots. Seventh, We try mulching to suppress weed occurrence, trampling pressure, and soil moisturizing effect. In addition, consideration should be given to the fertilization of the foliar fertilizer, the injection of the nutrients, and the soil management of the inorganic fertilizer for the continuous nutrition supply. Future monitoring and forecasting plans should be developed to check for changes continuously.

  • Slug/bail tests were conducted in sand layer (sbt-1 well), silty sand layer (sbt-2 well), and mixed sand and silty sand layer (sbt-3 well). Hydraulic conductivity and specific storage coefficient were estimated through slug/bail tests. Pore volumes of groundwater level drawdown zone for bail test were estimated by using hydraulic conductivity and specific storage coefficient. KGS model was most suitable interpretation method of slug/bail tests. Average hydraulic conductivity for slug/bail tests were estimated to be $6.65{\times}10^{-5}$ m/sec in sbt-1 well, $6.33{\times}10^{-6}$ m/sec in sbt-2 well, and $3.72{\times}10^{-5}$ m/sec in sbt-3 well. Average specific storage coefficient for slug/bail tests were estimated to be 0.0225 in sbt-1 well, 0.0177 in sbt-2 well, and 0.0259 in sbt-3 well. Dimensionless time and dimensionless wellbore storage were estimated by use of transmissivity, storativity, test time, and specification of test wells. And, dimensionless drawdown were selected by parameter ${\alpha}\;and\;{\beta}$ parameter from Cooper et al. (1967). Radius of influence were estimated by estimated dimensionless time, dimensionless wellbore storage, and dimensionless drawdown. The average radius of influnce for slug/bail tests were estimated to be 1.377 m in sbt-1 well, 1.253 m in sbt-2 well, and 1.558 m in sbt-3 well. Pore volume at groundwater level drawdown zone by dummy withdrawal for bail tests were estimated to be $145,636cm^3$ in sbt-1 well, $71,561cm^3$ in sbt-2 well, and $100,418cm^3$ in sbt-3 well. Pore volume excepted well volume at groundwater level drawdown zone by dummy withdrawal for bail tests were estimated to be $145,410cm^3$ in sbt-1 well, $71,353cm^3$ in sbt-2 well, and $100,192cm^3$ in sbt-3 well.
