  • In this paper, an 8051 microcontroller with application-specific instructions and I/O ports for data transmission is designed. The designed microcontoller includes two UART ports and one SMBus port to control external devices and to transmit data with them. Application-specific instruction is developed and added to the instruction set to exploit these I/O ports. So the designed microcontroller can perform multi-device control and multi-byte transmission. Also, it can reduce the code size of the application program. Especially, the designed microcontroller does not stall and can execute other programs during data transmission, which significantly increases its efficiency. Synthesized in 0.18 um technology, the area overhead due to application-specific instructions was negligible. Operations of all instructions and I/O ports were verified to run correctly on a FPGA board.

  • Currently, with the increasing demand for combining cellular phone and PDA, various kinds of PDA-phones are being developed. A typical PDA-phone consists of a CDMA processor and a PDA processor. Generally, a UART serial communication port is used for inter-processor communication. However, the CDMA standard will need more data bandwidth over 2Mbps with the emergence of IMT-2000. The bandwidth requirement is beyond the capability of UART. In this paper, several inter-processor communication mechanisms are analyzed and especially Dual Port Memory and USB were chosen as the candidates for the new communication mechanism. A prototype PDA-phone board has been implemented for experiment. The experimental result shows that Dual Port Memory is better than USB in cost performance.

  • In this paper, a reconfigurable peripheral unit for LED lighting communication is presented. Embedded lighting devices require various communication protocols. Usually, serial communication protocols and lighting control communication protocols such as DALI, DMX512, UART, SPI, IrDA, etc. are used in lighting devices. When the requirements of communication protocols are satisfied with separate IPs, the cost and the power consumption can considerably increase. We propose a reconfigurable communication peripheral unit which uses analysis of signal formats of the protocols. The gate count of the reconfigurable peripheral unit uses only 57% of the gate count of the separate implementation. Also, in this paper, a mapping table based DALI-ZigBee interfacing method for flexible lighting network configurations is proposed. Using this method, various DALI-ZigBee network systems can be easily set up. An LED lighting system platform is implemented to verify the operation of the DALI-ZigBee interfacing method. The reconfigurable peripheral unit and the DALI-ZigBee interfacing method can be efficiently used to implement various wired/wireless lighting communication systems.

  • A single chip NFC transceiver supporting not only NFC active and passive mode but also 13.56MHz RFID reader and tag mode was designed and fabricated. The proposed NFC transceiver can operate as a RFID tag even without external power supply which has dual antenna structure for initiator and target. The area increment due to additional target antenna is negligible because the target antenna is constructed by using a shielding layer of initiator antenna. The analog front end circuit of the proposed NFC transceiver consists of a transmitter and receiver of reader/writer block supporting NFC initiator or RFID reader mode, and a tag circuit for target of passive NFC mode or RFID tag mode. The maximum baud rate of the proposed NFC device is 212kbps by using UART serial interface. The chip has been designed and fabricated using a Magnachip's $0.35{\mu}m$ double poly 4-metal CMOS process, and the effective area of the chip is 2200um by 3600um.

  • Bluetooth is a specification for short-range wireless communication using the 2.4 GHz ISM band. It emphasizes low complexity, low power, and low cost. This paper describes an area-efficient digital baseband module for wireless technology. For area-efficiency, we carefully consider hardware and software partitioning. We implement complex control tasks of the Bluetooth baseband layer protocols in software running on an embedded microcontroller. Hardware-efficient functions, such as low-level bitstream link control; host controller interfaces (HCIs), such as universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) and universal serial bus (USB)interfaces; and audio Codec are performed by dedicated hardware blocks. Furthermore, we eliminate FIFOs for data buffering between hardware functional units. The design is done using fully synthesizable Verilog HDL to enhance the portability between process technologies so that our module can be easily integrated as an intellectual property core no system-on-a-chip (SoC) ASICs. A field programmable gate array (FPGA) prototype of this module was tested for functional verification and realtime operation of file and bitstream transfers between PCs. The module was fabricated in a $0.25-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, the core size of which was only 2.79 $mm{\times}2.80mm$.

  • Communication between system modules is applied using the Modbus protocol in industrial sites including smart factories, industrial drones, building energy management systems, PLCs, ships, trains, and airplanes. The existing Modbus was used for serial communication, but the recent Modbus protocol is used for TCP/IP communication. The Modbus protocol supports RTU, TCP and ASCII, and implements and uses protocols in embedded systems. However, the transmission I/O devices for RTU, TCP, and ASCII-based protocols may differ. For example, RTU and ASCII communications transmit on a serial-based communication protocol, but in some cases, Ethernet TCP/IP transmission is required. In particular, since the C language (object-oriented) is used in embedded systems, the complexity of source code related to I/O registers increases. In this study, we designed software that can logically separate I/O functions from embedded devices, and designed the execution logic of each instance requiring I/O processing through a delegate class instance with Modbus RTU, TCP, and ASCII protocol generation. We designed and experimented with software that can separate communication I/O processing and logical execution logic for each instance.
