  • The emission of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels has been identified as a major contributor to green house emissions and subsequent global warming and climate changes. For these reasons, it is necessary to separate and recover $CO_2$ gas. A new process based on gas hydrate crystallization is proposed for the $CO_2$ separation/recovery of the gas mixture. In this study, gas hydrate from $CO_2/H_2$ gas mixtures was formed in a semi-batch stirred vessel at a constant pressure and temperature. This mixture is of interest to $CO_2$ separation and recovery in Integrated Coal Gasification (IGCC) plants. The impact of tetrahydrofuran (THF) on hydrate formation from the $CO_2/H_2$ was observed. The addition of THF not only reduced the equilibrium formation conditions significantly but also helped ease the formation of hydrates. This study illustrates the concept and provides the basic operations of the separation/recovery of $CO_2$ (pre-combustion capture) from a fuel gas ($CO_2/H_2$) mixture.

  • An experimental study on oil absorbent was conducted to investigate the feasibility of utilizing absorbents in oil separation from water-oil mixture for spilt oil recovery. Experiments included investigations of absorptivity and filtering performance of a commercial oil absorbent for different diesel oil concentrations. The measured average absorptivity of the absorbent was above 92% for oil concentrations, 5, 10, 15vo1%, that shows good absorbing performance. Filtering the oil-water mixture, however, was too slow to be used for oil separation. An absorbent baffle system was suggested for oil separation which collects oil panicles by increasing contact between the absorbent and oil particles.

  • This paper studied succinic acid recovery from organic acid mixture by using mono-polar membrane electrodialysis. Current efficiency, solute recovery efficiency, energy consumption, and separation factor were measured at various pHs and concentration ratios. The separation factor of succinic acid could be interpreted in terms of ionization degree, molecular weight, ionic conductance, average charge, and initial feed composition.

  • In the separation of toluene/n-heptane mixture by the emulsion type liquid membrane in an batch system, the effect of surfactant on the separation factor and membrane stability was studied over the surfactant concentration ranging form 0.1 to 1.5wt% at the contact time of 5 and 10 minutes. and the settling time of 5 and 10 minutes. The surfactant used was sodium lauryl sulfate. The separation factor reached its maximum value at the surfactant concentration of 0.5wt% for surfantant. It was found that the percentage of membrane breakup reached its minimum values and the separation factor showed its maximum value at the surfactant concentration of 0.5wt%. which confirmed that efficient separation could be effect when emulsion liquid membrane was stable because of low membrane breakup.

  • A triboelectrostatic separation system using a fluidized bed tribocharger for the removal of PVC material in the mixture of PVC/PS plastics is designed and evaluated as a function of electric field strength, air flow rate, and the mixing ratio of two-component mixed plastics. It consists of a fluidized-bed tribocharger, a separation chamber, a collection chamber and a controller. PVC and PS particles can be imparted negative and positive surface charges, respectively, due to the difference in the work function values of plastics suspended in the fluidized-bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. Experimental results show that separation efficiency is strongly dependent on the electric Deld strength and particle mixing ratio. In the optimum conditions of 150 Ipm air flow rate and 2.6 kV/cm electric field strength a highly concentrated PVC (99.1%) can be recovered with a yield of more than 99.2% from the mixture of PVC and PS materials for a single stage of processing.

  • Separation of fructose and glucose was performed using emulsion liquid membranes with a mixture of an organoboronic acid and a quaternary ammonium salt as a carrier in a batch reactor. In order to find a carrier and an optimal experimental condition suitable to the sugar separation, extraction of each sugar was carried out independently. The effect of various experimental variables, such as initial concentration of sugar in the feed phase, type of organoboronic acids, and w/o ratio, on the sugar separation was investigated, and the concentrations of sugars in each aqueous phase were analyzed. The ratio of degree of extraction of fructose to that of glucose was very high, but the concentration of fructose in the receiving phase was not too high. Therefore, a stronger stripping agent in the receiving phase was required for development of a practical ELM system suitable to the sugar separation.

  • Deuterium is a crucial clean energy source required for nuclear fusion and is a future resource needed in various industries and scientific fields. However, it is not easy to enrich deuterium because the proportion of deuterium in the hydrogen mixture is scarce, at approximately 0.016 %. Furthermore, the physical and chemical properties of the hydrogen mixture and deuterium are very similar. Therefore, the efficient separation of deuterium from hydrogen mixtures is often a significant challenge when using modern separation technologies. Recently, to effectively separate deuterium, studies utilizing the 'Kinetic Quantum Sieving Effect (KQS)' of porous materials are increasing. Therefore, in this review, two different strategies have been discussed for improving KQS efficiency for hydrogen isotope separation performance using nanoporous materials. One is the gating effect, which precisely controls the aperture locally by adjusting the temperature and pressure. The second is the breathing phenomenon, utilizing the volume change of the structure from closed system to open system. It has been reported that efficient hydrogen isotope separation is possible using these two methods, and each of these effects is described in detail in this review. In addition, a specific-isotope responsive system (e.g., 2nd breathing effect in MIL-53) has recently been discovered and is described here as well.
