A Photochemical-Trajectory model was used to understand the production of ozone in the atmospheric boundary layer. This model was composed of the trajectory and the photochemical models. To calculate trajectories of air parcels, winds were obtained from the three-dimensional nonhydrostatic mesoscale model (PSU/NCAR MM5V2), and the results were interpolated into constant height surfaces. Numerical integration in the trajectory model was performed by the Runge-Kutta method. The photochemical model consisted of chemical reactions and photodissociation processes. Chemical equations were integrated by the semi-implicit Bulirsch-Stoer method. We performed our experiments from 21 July to 23 July 1994 during the summer time for Seoul area. During the time of maximum ozone concentration in Seoul, four trajectories of air parcels which traveled from Inchon to Seoul were selected. Ozone concentrations estimated by two models are compared with observed one in Seoul area and the photochemical-trajectory model is better fitted than pure photochemical model. During the selected period, high ozone concentrations in Seoul area were more influenced by transferred pollutants from Inchon than emitted pollutants in Seoul.

The numerous benefits of Savonius turbine such as simple in structure, has appropriate self-start ability, relatively low operating velocity, water acceptance from any direction and low environmental impact have generated interests among researchers. However, it suffers from a lower efficiency compared to other types of water turbine. To improve its performance, parameters such flow pattern, pressure and velocity in different conditions must be analyzed. For this purpose, a detailed description on the flow field of various types of Savonius rotors is required. This article presents a numerical study on a nonlinear two-dimensional flow over a classic Savonius type rotor and a Benesh type rotor. In this experiment, sliding mesh was used for solving the motion of the bucket. The unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved for velocity and pressure coupling by using the SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure linked Equations) algorithm. Other than that, the turbulence model using $k-{\varepsilon}$ standard obtained good results. This simulation demonstrated the method of the flow field characteristics, the behavior of velocity vectors and pressure distribution contours in and around the areas of the bucket.
Recently, the authors have developed a method for real-time dynamics of multibody systems, which combines a semi-recursive formulation to derive the equations of motion in dependent relative coordinates, along with an augmented Lagrangian technique to impose the loop closure conditions. The following numerical integration procedures, which can be grouped into the so-called structural integrators, were tested : trapezoidal rule, Newmark dissipative schemes, HHT rule, and the Generalized-${\alpha}$ family. It was shown that, for large multi body systems, Newmark dissipative was the best election since, provided that the adequate parameters were chosen, excellent behavior was achieved in terms of efficiency and robustness with acceptable levels of accuracy. In the present paper, the performance of the described method in combination with another group of integrators, the Implicit Runge-Kutta family (IRK), is analyzed. The purpose is to clarify which kind of IRK algorithms can be more suitable for real-time applications, and to see whether they can be competitive with the already tested structural family of integrators. The final objective of the work is to provide some practical criteria for those interested in achieving real-time performance for large and complex multibody systems.
A multi-dimensional component for the thermal-hydraulic system analysis code, MARS, was developed for a more realistic three-dimensional analysis of nuclear systems. A three-dimensional and two-fluid model for a two-phase flow in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates was employed. The governing equations and physical constitutive relationships were extended from those of a one-dimensional version. The numerical solution method adopted a semi-implicit and finite-difference method based on a staggered-grid mesh and a donor-cell scheme. The relevant length scale was very coarse compared to commercial computational fluid dynamics tools. Thus a simple Prandtl's mixing length turbulence model was applied to interpret the turbulent induced momentum and energy diffusivity. Non drag interfacial forces were not considered as in the general nuclear system codes. Several conceptual cases with analytic solutions were chosen and analyzed to assess the fundamental terms. RPI air-water and UPTF 7 tests were simulated and compared to the experimental data. The simulation results for the RPI air-water two-phase flow experiment showed good agreement with the measured void fraction. The simulation results for the UPTF downcomer test 7 were compared to the experiment data and the results from other multi-dimensional system codes for the ECC delivery flow.
The flooding and overtopping due to unexpected large ocean wave may occur serious problems to environments and structures. Generally fixed wave breakers and several structures were installed to prevent such damages, however, they may affect to environments and charted path of ships badly. In this regard, new type of initial wave breaker was investigated in both of experimentally and numerically. For the experiments, conceptual devices were built by authors with stereo vision system. The moving particle semi-implicit method was adopted for simulation. It is revealed that the initial wave breaker reduce the damages from ocean waves by energy dissipated earlier. Furthermore, the effects of position of the initial wave breaker was also considered.

A topology optimization method for phononic crystals is developed for the design of sound barriers, using the level set approach. Given a frequency and an incident wave to the phononic crystals, an optimal shape of periodic inclusions is found by minimizing the norm of transmittance. In a sound field including scattering bodies, an acoustic wave can be refracted on the obstacle boundaries, which enables to control acoustic performance by taking the shape of inclusions as the design variables. In this research, we consider a layered structure which is composed of inclusions arranged periodically in horizontal direction while finite inclusions are distributed in vertical direction. Due to the periodicity of inclusions, a unit cell can be considered to analyze the wave propagation together with proper boundary conditions which are imposed on the left and right edges of the unit cell using the Bloch theorem. The boundary conditions for the lower and the upper boundaries of unit cell are described by impedance matrices, which represent the transmission of waves between the layered structure and the semi-infinite external media. A level set method is employed to describe the topology and the shape of inclusions. In the level set method, the initial domain is kept fixed and its boundary is represented by an implicit moving boundary embedded in the level set function, which facilitates to handle complicated topological shape changes. Through several numerical examples, the applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated.

In this paper, the steady 2-dimensional model for a long horizontal line with different end temperatures undergoing natural convection at very high Rayleigh number is proposed to numerically investigate the heat transfer and flow characteristics. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm which is developed using control volumes and staggered grids. The numerical results are verified by comparison with the operating PWR test data. The analysis focuses on the effects of variation of the heat transfer rates at the pipe surface, the thermal conductivities of the pipe material and the thickness of the pipe wall on the thermal stratification. The results show that the heat transfer rate at the pipe surface is the controlling parameter. A significant reduction and disappearance of thermal stratification phenomenon is observed at the Biot number of 5.0$\times$10$^{-2}$. The results also show that the increment of the thermal conductivity and thickness of the wall weakens the thermal stratification and somewhat reduces azimuthal temperature gradient in the pipe wall. Those effects are however minor, when compared with those due to the variation of the heat transfer rates at the surface of the pipe wall.

This paper concentrates on the development of a computational design program to determine nozzle size in water jet, combing the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. To achieve the above objective, a two-dimensional model was developed for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard ${k}-\varepsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermo fluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.
To investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet, the most important factors of the numerical analysis are the evaluation of the free surface and the turbulence transportation under the stratification. In present study, a numeriacal simulation model used with the semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE), the non-hydrostatic approximation and the algebraic stress model (ASM) is applied to investigate the vertical structure of internal flow hydrodynamically. The ASM enables to take account of anisotropy of turbulence, the damping effects of the density interface, and the free surface on the turbulence structure accurately. The ASM tested produces better agreement than the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ model with measurements by Nakatsuji (1984) on the flow development and turbulence structure. Applicability of the ASM to a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet is examined through comparison with experimental data.
In this paper, an unsteady analytical model for the thermal stratification in the pressurizer surge line of PWR plant has been proposed to investigate the temperature profile, flow characteristics, and thermal stress in the pipe. In this model, the interface level, between hot and cold fluid, is assumed to be a function of time while the other models had developed for time independent or steady state. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using a SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm. The analysis result for an example shows that the maximum dimensionless temperature difference is about 0.78 between hot and cold sections of pipe wall and the maximum thermal stress by thermal stratification is calculated about 276 MPa at the dimensionless time 27.0 under given conditions.
