This study examined the structural relationship between life stress perceived by university students and their gambling behaviors through their self-control and family support. For this, it conducted the questionnaire on life stress, self-control, family support and gambling behavior with 387 university students attending universities in Gwangju city and analyzed the data collected. The results of the analysis were described below. As a result of analyzing the direct effects of life stress on gambling behavior, self-control and family support, it was found that the life stress had the positive effect on gambling behavior and it meant that when the university students couldn't cope with the life stress effectively and felt frustrated, they were likely to be involved in gambling behavior to escape from their helplessness. In addition, as a result of analyzing the direct effects of life stress on self-control and family support, it was found that life stress had negative effect on self-control and family support. The more experiences of life stress they had, the lower their self-control was. As their life stress was higher, they didn't make supportive relationship network with family members. As a result of mediating effects, it was shown that self-control and family support played the partially negative roles in the relationship between life stress and gambling behavior and it suggested that as the life stress was perceived less, self-control was performed better and as family support was higher, gambling behavior was effectively reduced. These results of the research suggested that life stress could be handled actively through self-control and family support and development and distribution of the program to cope with life stress could minimize the gambling behaviors. Also the limitations of this study and necessity of further studies were discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to obtain research-based evidence on the relationships among general characteristics, family strength, self-control, and happiness among late school-aged children using a correlational research design. Methods: The participants were 172 fifth- and sixth-grade students from two public elementary schools. Data were collected by employing structured questionnaires, including the Korean Family Strengths Scale for Strengthening Family II, a self-control scale, and a happiness scale. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23.0. Results: The level of happiness of late school-aged students showed significant correlations with family strength (r=.78, p<.001), and self-control (r=.59, p<.001). Family strength had a significant positive correlation with self-control (r=.55, p<.001). The factors with a significant impact on participants' happiness were family strength (${\beta}=.63$, p<.001), self-control (${\beta}=.21$, p<.001), exercise frequency, and self-perceived health. The total explanatory power of the model was 69%, and the explanatory power of family strength for the level of happiness was 61%, showing that the family strength was the most important factor that promoted happiness in late school-aged students. Conclusion: These findings imply that improving family strength is an important aspect of promoting happiness among late school-aged children. Interventions to strengthen late school-aged children's self-control are also necessary.
This study examined pathways from maternal parenting behavior to adolescents' internet addiction through both self-control and depression/anxiety. Participants were 449 $8^{th}$ and $9^{th}$ graders in Seoul. They completed questionnaires on maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control, depression/anxiety, and internet addiction. Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling. Maternal parenting behavior indirectly influenced adolescents' internet addiction through self-control and depression/anxiety. Self-control and depression/anxiety individually mediated between maternal parenting behavior and internet addition. However, maternal parenting behavior didn't directly affect adolescents' internet addiction. Self-control was influenced by maternal parenting behavior and also played a crucial role in preventing adolescents' internet addiction.
This study used Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) to test causal relationships among perceived social supports, self-control, and subjective well-being in a sample of 325 5th and 6th grade elementary school children. Correlations of observed variables showed statistically significant among perceived social support, self-control, and subjective well-being. The goodness-of-fit of the hypothetical structural model in the study, perceived social support having direct effects on self-control and subjective well-being, and self-control, retaining the influence of perceived social support, having effects on subjective well-being-showed fairly acceptable levels. The results revealed that perceived social supports increase children's subjective well-being, and these supports also increase children's self-control, which indirectly influences children's subjective well-being.
본 연구는 육군병사가 지각한 부모애착과 자기통제력과의 관계에서 공격성과 자아존중감의 매개효과를 알아보기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 현역병사를 대상으로 설문조사를 하여 507부를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 병사들의 부모애착과 자기통제력은 정적상관이 있는 것으로 나타났으며 공격성과 자기통제력은 부적상관을, 자아존중감과 자기통제력은 정적상관을 나타냈다. 한편 부모애착은 자기통제력에 직접적으로 영향을 줄 뿐만 아니라 공격성과 자아존중감을 매개로 자기통제력에 간접적으로도 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났으며 매개효과는 자아존중감보다 공격성이 상대적으로 더 큰 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 상담 실제 및 후속 연구에 대한 시사점을 논하였다.
Purpose Despite the continued rise in the popularity of mobile MMORPGs, the previous studies mainly focused on negative results of playing MMORPG such as violence and game addiction. In addition, previous studies that verified game play motives were not enough to explain user's fundamental motives for MMORPG play. To verify the positive role of playing MMORPG, this study focused on stress coping strategies on continued play MMORPG, and divided factors into two dimensions: escapism and coping with system. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively identify the discriminatory effects of each factor on users' self-control, and the effect of self-constrol and behavioral adapatation on continued use intention for MMORPG. Design/methodology/approach This study was designed to examine the structural relationships among MMORPG users' escapism, system coping, self-control, behavioral adaptation and continued use intention for MMORPG. Findings The results from this study are as follow. First, the participants' effect-based escapism had a positive impact on self-control, whereas cause-based escapism had a negative impact on self-control. Next, proactive coping and reactive coping for system problem had a positive impact on self-control. In addition, Self-control had a positive impact on behavioral adaptation and continued use intention for MMORPG. Lastly, the behavioral adaptation to MMORPG had a positive impact continued use intention. The results of our study can suggest the positive effects of coping strategy on users' self-control and behavioral adaptation by applying the theory of both escapism and coping with system. Based on our results, game companies should develop contents that can gratify users' coping motives and enhance self-control and behavioral adaptation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation between the motivations to use social media and self-control among female middle school students. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study. To collect the data, 300 female students of S and E middle school in S city responded to a self-administered questionnaire asking about their motivation for social media use and self-control. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Scheffétest, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression, using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The average time spent on social media was 3.70 hours. The mean scores of social media usage motivation and self-control were 48.15 and 58.47, respectively. The more average time spent on social media, the higher was the motivation to use social media. The scores of motivation to use social media were higher in students with low satisfaction of their school and family life. Students with low satisfaction of their school life had higher scores in some subcategories of self-control; preference to simple task, egocentrism, and stroppiness. Motivations to use social media showed a significant positive correlation with self-control. Self-control was affected by motivations to use social media and this variable explained 11.6% of self-control among female middle school students. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that we should develop programs which help improve students' self-control and prevent the side effects of social media use among female middle school students.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a self-control competency scale for school-aged children and to confirm its reliability and validity. Methods: This study involved methodological research to verify the reliability and validity of a self-control competency scale for school-aged children. Data were collected from 438 students in the fifth and sixth grades of elementary school. Results: The self-control competency scale was composed of 13 items and six subscales (control of relationship with one's teacher, problem-solving, peer empathy, control of relationships with one's peers, impulse control, and emotional control). The internal consistency reliability of the scale was evaluated using Cronbach's α, which was .83 for the entire scale and ranged from .65 to .76 for the subscales. The model of six subscales was validated by CFA (CMIN/df=1.977; p<.001, GFI=.94, SRMR=.050, RMSEA=.065, IFI=.95, TLI=.93, CFI=.95). Concurrent validity was evaluated by comparing this scale to the scale developed by Nam and Ok (2000), and a significant correlation was found (r=.82, p<.001). On this scale, higher scores indicate higher levels of self-control among late-school-aged children. Conclusion: This scale can be used as a valid and reliable instrument for examining self-control competency among late-school-aged children.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine whether a MBTI based self growth program had any effect on improving the ego identity, self efficacy, interpersonal relations ability and adjustment of nursing students. Method: The subjects in this study were 56 juniors who were majoring in nursing science at H and S college in Chungnam province. At each college, an experimental group and a control group were organized with 26 and 30 students respectively, and the data were gathered at H college from April 6 through May 14, 2004, and at S college from May 31 through July 3, 2004. A MBTI based self growth program was conducted 10 times for five weeks, twice a week and for 120 minutes each. And the ego identity, self efficacy, interpersonal relations ability and adjustment of the selected students were measured and compared to see if that program has any effect on above variables. For data handling, SAS 8.0 program was employed. Fisher's exact test and unpaired t-test were used to confirm whether or not the experimental and control groups were equivalent. Before the experiment, their ego identity, self efficacy, interpersonal relations ability and adjustment were tested by one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple comparison in consideration of their general characteristics, and paired t-test and ANCOVA were utilized to see if that program brought any changes to their ego identity, self efficacy, interpersonal relations ability and adjustments. Result: The findings of the study were as follows; After the MBTI based self growth program was applied, the experimental groups made a significant progress in ego identity than the control groups. And the experimental groups underwent a significantly change in ego identity after the experiment, compared to the control groups. The experimental groups showed a significant improvement in self efficacy than the control group, and the experimental groups showed significant change in self efficacy than the control groups after the experiment. The experimental group showed a significant progress in interpersonal relations ability than the control group did, and the former groups underwent significant change in that regard than the control groups after the experiment. There was no difference in adjustment between the experimental and control groups. The experimental groups showed significant change in adjustment than the control groups after the experiment, but the difference was insignificant. After this program was implemented, the students underwent changes in self understanding, self accepting, understanding others and accepting others. They also had more confidence and more positive self images, and they were better able to tide over difficulties with others. Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that the MBTI based self growth program might serve to enhance the ego identity, self efficacy and interpersonal relations ability of the nursing students and brought inner changes to them. Therefore, the MBTI based self growth program was expected to make a great contribution to the character building of nurses.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between child's self-regulation and stress according to child's sex. The subjects for this study were 380 children of 5-6th grade selected from elementary schools in Busan. Lee, Soon-Kyu's questionnaires(1994) on child's self-regulation and Han, Mi-Hyun's questionnaires(1996) on child's stress were used. Statistical techniques such as Manova, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression, canonical were used. The resets were as follows : (1) According to sex, there were significant differences in child's self-regulation and stress. The girls showed more self-regulation and higher friend-related stress than the boys. The boys showed higher parent-related stress than the girls. (2) Relationships between child's self-regulation and stress showed as follows : The boys who used more impulsive-control perceived lower friend-related stress, lower school-related stress, lower teacher-related stress, and lower surroundings-related stress. And the boys who used more behavioral-control perceived lower school-related stress, lower teacher-related stress, and lower surroundings-related stress. (3) The predicted variable for boy's friend-related stress was impulsive-control. The predicted variables for boy's school-related stress, teacher-related stress and surroundings-related stress were impulsive-control and behavioral-control. (4) Among three dimensions of self-regulation for boy, the effective variables were impulsive-control and behavioral-control. And among six dimensions of stress were surroundings-related stress, school-related stress and friend-related stress. Implications of this study were discussed in terms of child's self-regulation and stress.
