  • In this study, 1, 2 and 4% aqueous extracts of common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) fruit were tested against pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis) for development of an environmental friendly control methods of this pest. The common cocklebur fruit extracts showed effects on mortality, repellency, fecundity and adult emergence of C. chinensis and inhibited pulse grains from damage. The 4% extract showed the highest mortality (26%) and repellency rate (53.3%) at 2 day after treatment and 3 hours after treatment, respectively. The studied insects revealed lowest fecundity (113.7 female-1), highest percentage of adult emergence inhibition (37.0%) and lowest percentage (42.3%) of seed damage when they were reared on pulse grains mixed with 4% extract. This finding indicated that common cocklebur fruit extract may be used in the integrated management of pulse beetle for protecting stored grains.

  • This study was carried out to develop and investigate integrated mechanization system for culture of carrot. Compared with the conventional hand planting, use of a mechanical planter for pelleted seeds resulted in a saving of planting time by 225 hours. An additional saving of 460 hours was obtained for thinning the seedlings. Besides seeds could be saved by 72%, planting and thinning be done only in 35 hours per ha field when the pelleted seeds were planted with a planter. Work hour reduced by adopting the mechanical planting of pelleted seeds sharply contrasted to that of 720 hours required for hand-planting the thinning hours, resulting in a reduction of labor by more than 95%. SMP followed pelleting tended not only to increase the percentage of seedling emergence in the field but to induce an a day earlier germination.

  • Wheat is one of the most important grains. Its consumption is increasing globally. Many countries are making efforts to increase the extent of wheat harvest. It is known that plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) have beneficial effects on various plants. Two PGPRs including Paenibacillus pabuli strain P7S (PP7S) and Pseudomonas nitroreducens strain IHB (PnIHB) were employed to investigate effects of PGPRs on early growth of three wheat cultivars (Koso, Seakumkang, and Jokyung). While PP7S had adverse effects on Seakumkang and Jokyung, PP7S had positive effects on Koso except root length compared to control group having no treatment of PP7S. However, all treatments with PnIHB had adverse effects on germination rate, root/shoot lengths, vigor index, and dry root/shoot weights of all three wheat cultivars. These positive effects with PP7S on Koso might be related to the earlier emergence of wheat seed above soil which is known to be an indicator of increased yield. Results of the present study suggest that if proper PGPR strains are selected, they could have positive effects on early growth rate of a wheat cultivar.

  • The present study was examined seed germination and growth characteristics of Cynanchum wilfordii under the following conditions such as soaking temperature, concentrations of $GA_3$, trays and soil types, and shading conditions. In seed pre-treatment, germination rate was the highest at 93% when soaked in 100 ppm $GA_3$ at $20^{\circ}C$ and seedling growth was best in 50 plug cell tray. Physiological quality was best in the condition in which seeds were treated with 10 ppm $GA_3$ at $20^{\circ}C$. Taking into consideration the seedling growth, their physiological quality as well as economical aspects, seedlings with plant height (over 10 cm) and root length (over 10 cm) were grown vigorously 30-45 days after the seeds were sown in mid-April in TKS, TKS+perlite and TKS+rice hull of 128 or 200 plug cell tray.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the positive or negative effects of 5-aminolevulinic acid(ALA) on the growth of several crops and weeds, by applying a seed soaking treatment, foliar treatment, and application timing, while comparing biological activity between ALA produced by chemical synthesis (Synthetic-ALA) and extracellularly-accumulated ALA by overexpressing the hemeA gene isolated from Bradyrhizobium japonicum(Bio-ALA). Seed soaking treatment of ALA in barley (five cultivars) and wheat (five cultivars) had not shown positive effects at lower concentrations, 0.05 to 0.5 mM as well as negative effects at higher concentrations, 1 to 30 mM. In rice, there also was no positive effect by seed soaking treatment of ALA at lower concentrations, although the rice became damaged by an application of 5 and 10 mM ALA. Growth in barley cultivars, Ganghossalbori, Naehanssalbori, Songhakbori, Saessalbori, and Daehossalbori were increased up to 14%, 19-51 %, 17-64%, 18-23%, and 22-38% by ALA foliar application at lower concentrations, 0.05 to 0.5 mM, respectively. On the other hand, the growth in barley cultivars was inhibited by ALA foliar application at higher concentrations. Barley responded more positively to ALA foliar application than wheat and rice. The growth stimulation caused by ALA seed soaking treatment was less than by ALA foliar treatment. ALA treatment at the 1.5-leaf stage increased growth of barley by 19-58%, while pretreatment to seeds, post-emergence treatment at 3 days after seeding, 3-leaf stages, and 5-leaf stages had not shown positive effects. Thus, the positive effects of ALA on barley were dependent greatly upon the timing of application and its concentration. Monocots weeds were more sensitive to ALA foliar treatment than dicotyledonous weeds. A monocot weed, Setaria viridis L. was the most susceptible plant to ALA while a dicotyledonous weed, Plantago asiatica L. was the most tolerant. No significant difference in biological activity between bio-ALA and synthetic ALA on barley, wheat, rice, and weed, Ixeris dentate tested was observed. Thus, ALA produced by microorganisms would be a potent substance to be used effectively in agricultural production.

  • Rice bakanae is a typical seed-borne and seed-transmitted disease caused by infection by Fusarium fujikuroi. Seed disinfection using chemical fungicides (such as benomyl and prochloraz) is most effective in controlling the disease, but the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains has recently been increasing. Slightly acidic hypochlorous acid water (SAHW) is a safe and environmentally friendly disinfectant that has a potent and broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against viruses, bacteria, and fungi. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of SAHW against F. fujikuroi strains, including chemical fungicide-resistant strains, as an alternative to conventional chemical fungicides in the management of bakanae disease. SAHW showed strong but similar levels of antifungal activity among the F. fujikuroi strains with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC90) of 5±2.5 ppm of free available chlorine (FAC). In addition, F. fujikuroi cells lost viability completely within 5 min of SAHW treatment due to the lethal damage to cell integrity. When the rice seeds infected by F. fujikuroi were treated with SAHW containing 20±10 ppm of FAC for 12 hr, the efficiencies of seed disinfection and disease control were 95-98% and 90.1-92.6%, respectively. Altogether, our data suggest that SAHW is an effective compound for controlling rice bakanae disease.

  • In order to investigate an etiological characteristics of the pepper anthracnose fungus infected with Collectotrichum dematium, this experiment was undertaken. Isolation percent of the fungus was 55.3% from the seed sample of Jewon and 0.3% from that of Eumsung Kun, according to seed health blotter method. Although the acervulus was similar to the known two Colletotricum species, C. acutatum and C. gloeosporioides, setae was not only straightly extended above the acervulus, but also shaped as falcate conidia ranging $12{\sim}31.2{\times}2.4{\sim}4.8{\mu}m$. Acervului of the fungus were evenly scattered on the surface of pepper seed coat, and caused seedling blight after seed germination. Pre-and post-emergence seedling blight as well as foliar lesion and fruit rot was confirmed by inoculating conidial suspension. No typical anthracnose sysmptom was obtained from soybean seedlings, welsch onion and spinach seedlings upon inoculation. Therefore, this fungus is said to the undescribed form species of the fungus of pepper in Korea (Colletotricum dematium f. sp. capsicum).

  • In order to determine the optimum sowing date of Cassia tora L., ecological characters, components and yield were investigated under vinyl-mulching and non-mulching condition. Emergence date and maturation date of vinyl-mulching condition were earlier than those of non-mulching condition. especially with maturation date being about 30 days earlier, Under vinyl-mulching condition, length of stem and pod were longer, number of branches, pods and seeds per plant were increased, stem diameter was thicker, and weight of 1000 grains was heavier. Seed yield per 10a under vinyl-mulching was twice as high as that of non-nulching condition. As sowing date was delayed, the maturation date was progressively delayed. At sowing date of April 10, plants showed the longest in length of stem and pod, the largest in number of pods per plant and number of grains per pod, and the highest in weight of 1000 grains and seed yield. Judging from the results, optimum sowing of Cassia tora L. appeared to be April 10.

  • This experiment was conducted far the efficient use of plant growth retardants (PGR) for suppression of plug seedling height. 'Seokwang' tomato seeds were soaked in I5 mL solution of daminozide (1,000, 10,000, or 100,000 mg.L-1) or uniconazole (1, 10, or 100 mg.L-1). And then, they were put in $25^{\circ}C$ chamber for one or three days. Seeds were washed in tap waters and were dried in 5$^{\circ}C$ chamber for one day. Dried tomato seeds were sown and seedlings were raised in 288-cell plug trays. Seedlings grown were evaluated at 21 and 38 days after sowing. Treatments of 10 or 100 mg.L-1 uniconazole as compared to the control had significantly suppressed hypocotyl length and seedling height, but fresh and dry weights of roots, emergence, no. of leaves, chlorophyll concentration, dry matter, and T/R ratio were not significant by different among treatments.

  • To study the effects of planting dates and mulching on the growth and yield of summer type soybean, a variety, Damamidori introduced from Japan, was planted four times from April 13 with 10 days interval. Experimental plot in each planting date was devided into two sub-plots, polyethylene film mulching and non-mulching. By mulching, days to emergence and first flowering were shortened, especially in the early plantings; e.g. as much as 11 and 12 days, respectively, in the first planting. Compared to non-mulching, plant height, number of nodes of main stem, number of branches, and dry weight of stem and branches per unit area were also much increased by mulching. As the plantings were delayed, plant height, the total number of nodes and dry weight of main stem and branches, and 100 seed weight showed increasing trends, which were mainly due to lower infection rate of soybean seeds to pod and stem blight (Diaporthe phaseolorum) in the later plantings. The higher infection rate of soybean seeds to pod and stem blight, the lower infection rate to purple seed stain (Cercospora kikuchii) was shown in mulching but not in non-mulching.
