  • In this paper, we present the area-based Q-learning to search a target object using multiple robot. To search the target in Markovian space, the robots should recognize their surrounding at where they are located and generate some rules to act upon by themselves. Under area-based Q-learning, a robot, first of all, obtains 6-distances from itself to environment by infrared sensor which are hexagonally allocated around itself. Second, it calculates 6-areas with those distances then take an action, i.e., turn and move toward where the widest space will be guaranteed. After the action is taken, the value of Q will be updated by relative formula at the state. We set up an experimental environment with five small mobile robots, obstacles, and a target object, and tried to search for a target object while navigating in a unknown hallway where some obstacles were placed. In the end of this paper, we presents the results of three algorithms - a random search, area-based action making (ABAM), and hexagonal area-based Q-teaming.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to intelligent motion and autonomous maneuvering of mobile robots using hybrid system. In high Level, the discrete states are defined by using the sensor-based search windows and the reference motions of a mobile robot as a low vevel are specified in the abstracted motions, The mobile robots can perform both the motion planning and autonomous maneuvering with obstacle avoidance in indoor navigation problem. Simulation and experimental results show that hybrid system approach is an effective method for the autonomous maneuvering in indoor environments.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method of path planning for autonomous mobile robot in mapped circumstance. To search the optimal path, we adopt the genetic algorithm which is based on the natural mechanics of selection, crossover and mutation. We propose a method for generating the path population, selection and evaluation in genetic algorithm. Simulations show the efficiency for the global path planning, if we adopt the proposed GA method

  • Mobile Robots are increasingly being used to perform tasks in unknown environment. The potential of robots to undertake such tasks lies in their ability to intelligently and efficiently search in an environment. To achieve autonomous mobile robot navigation, efficient path planner and accurate localization technique are the fundamental issues that should be addressed. This paper presents mobile robot localization using IRID(InfraRed IDentification) as artificial landmarks. IRID has highly deterministic characteristics, different from RFID. By putting several IRID emitters on the ceiling, the floor is divided into many different sectors and each sector is set to have a unique identification. Dead-reckoning provides the estimated robot configuration but the error becomes accumulated as the robot travels. IRID information tells the sector the robot is in, but the size of the uncertainty is too large if only the IRID information is used. This paper presents an algorithm which combines both the encoder and the IRID information so that the size of the uncertainty becomes smaller. It also introduces a framework which can be used with other types of the artificial landmarks. The characteristics of the developed IRID and the proposed algorithm are verified from the simulation results and experiments.

  • Various robot platforms have been designed and developed to perform given tasks in a hazardous environment for surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue, etc. We considered a terrain-adaptive and transformable hybrid robot platform that is equipped with rapid navigation capability on flat floors and good performance in overcoming stairs or obstacles. The navigation mode transition is determined and implemented by adaptive driving mode control of the mobile robot. In order to maximize the usability of wheel-track hybrid robot platform, we propose a terrain-adaptive and user-friendly remote controller and verify the efficiency and performance through its navigation performance experiments in real and test-bed environments.

  • Various robot platforms have been designed and developed to perform given tasks in a hazardous environment for the purpose of surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue, and etc. We have considered a terrain adaptive hybrid robot platform which is equipped with rapid navigation on flat floors and good performance on overcoming stairs or obstacles. Since our special consideration is posed to its flexibility for real application, we devised a design of a transformable robot structure which consists of an ordinary wheeled structure to navigate fast on flat floor and a variable tracked structure to climb stairs effectively. Especially, track arms installed in front side, rear side, and mid side are used for navigation mode transition between flatland navigation and stairs climbing. The mode transition is determined and implemented by adaptive driving mode control of mobile robot. The wheel and track hybrid mobile platform apparatus applied off-road driving mechanism for various professional service robots is verified through experiments for navigation performance in real and test-bed environment.

  • This study focuses on autonomous exploration based on map expansion for an underwater robot equipped with acoustic sonars. Map expansion is applicable to large-area mapping, but it may affect localization accuracy. Thus, as the key contribution of this paper, we propose a method for underwater autonomous exploration wherein the robot determines the trade-off between map expansion ratio and position accuracy, selects which of the two has higher priority, and then moves to a mission step. An occupancy grid map is synthesized by utilizing the measurements of an acoustic range sonar that determines the probability of occupancy. This information is then used to determine a path to the frontier, which becomes the new search point. During area searching and map building, the robot revisits artificial landmarks to improve its position accuracy as based on imaging sonar-based recognition and EKF-SLAM if the position accuracy is above the predetermined threshold. Additionally, real-time experiments were conducted by using an underwater robot, yShark, to validate the proposed method, and the analysis of the results is discussed herein.

  • This paper proposes an approach to search for the odor source using an autonomous mobile robot equipped with vision and odor sensors. The robot is initially navigating around the specific area with vision system until it looks for an object in the camera image. The robot approaches the object found in the field of view and checks it with the odor sensors if it is releasing odor. If so, the odor is classified and localized with the classification algorithm based on neural network The AMOR(Autonomous Mobile Olfactory Robot) was built up and used for the experiments. Experimental results on the classification and localization of odor sources show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

Thus, the types and functions of robots operated by 16 domestic and foreign libraries were examined. Most of them were used for Librarian Assistance (Book Inventory, Book Delivery, Etc.) and User Service (Facility Guide, Search Aids, Etc.). Besides, the introduction of robots in the National Library of Korea (NLK) and their functional limitations were analyzed. As a result, this study presented the need to develop additional functions for the robot, develop quarantine and security robots, the need for a national-level policy for robot diffusion, and build a robot ecosystem.

  • This paper presents a method of navigation sign recognition in indoor environments using a fuzzy inference for an autonomous mobile robot. In order to adapt to image deformation of a navigation sign resulted from variations of view-points and distances, a multi-labeled template matching(MLTM) method and a dynamic area search method(DASM) are proposed. The DASM is proposed to detect correct feature points among incorrect feature points. Finally sugeno-style fuzzy inference are adopted for recognizing the navigation sign.
