Objective: The aim of this study is to provide a current knowledge of the multiple issues regarding motion effects on crew performance. Background: The motions of the ship may create motion sickness, nausea and vomit. Also, these motions also disturb the balance of crew members, increase the energy expenditure of crew for shipboard work, and result in increased levels of injury and fatigue. However, the motion effects of the ship on crew performance has not been thoroughly investigated. Method: Participants(N=10) were engaged in an experiment in 2 experimental environments(training ship and ship handling simulator) and 2 navigational conditions(day and night). The COP(Center of Pressure) data were recorded as an objective measure of postural balance control and the SSQ(Simulator Sickness Questionnaire) was used as a subjective measure of sickness. Results: The results showed that COP has a no significant difference based on experimental environments, but significant effect on SSQ. Conclusion: During the virtual simulator navigation, subjects showed significant SSQ level changes, which included decreased SSQ data. But, there is no significant difference of COP between training ship and ship handling simulator. Application: The results of this study could be applied to the next generation of ship design to decrease effect of motion at sea and to increase performance of ship crew.
This study aims to identify the warm and cold periods(WP, CP) of November appeared in the daily normals of daily minimum temperature of Seoul for 1941~1970 and 1971~2000 and to investigate synoptic characteristics of the temperature changes of WP and CP. The WP temperatures are increased clearly(p value 0.000), the CP temperatures are also warming but not significant statistically. In WP, there are not apparent trends corresponding the warming of WP temperature, in the Siberian High, Sea Level Pressure(SLP), 925hPa surface wind(U925, V925) around the Korean peninsula. In high period(1972~1979) of WP temperature, there are positive SLP anomaly and anomalous anticyclonic circulation pattern of 925hPa wind field over the Korean peninsula then the winter monsoon is weakened and the WP temperature is ascending. In CP, the Siberian high are weakening, the Hokkaido eastern low are strengthening and the westerlies(U925) over the Korean Peninsula are enlarging. So CP temperature are suppressed in rising trend or shows weak descent.

This study intended to explain the relationship between climate change and magnetic susceptibility of estuarine sediment. Data of OSL dating and magnetic susceptibility from estuarine tidal sediment were compared with various climate change data. During the last Holocene, the intense of magnetic susceptibility related with weaker Siberian High and stronger Asian Summer Monsoon. It is explained that high precipitation and runoff made much fluvial sediment input to the estuary. From the early to mid Holocene, there is no clear relationship between climate change and MS because of the much coastal sediment input caused by rapid sea level rise and the formation of upland soil and coastal marsh. These results contribute to reconstruct paleo-environmental changes of west coast of Korea, in the way of using benefit of ubiquitous estuarine tidal flats and relatively useful magnetic susceptibility methodoloy.

The changes of sea bottom configuration, which may cause the coastal disasters, have been considered as social problems. It is obvious that the beach deformation is attributable to the sediment transport associated with erosion and siltation in coastal areas such esturies, channel and harbors. The prediction method and countermeasures far them, however, are not on the level of satisfaction, which indicates that make efforts should be made on developing them. Groin was constructed at Hak-Dong gravel beach to embark ship at 1996, as a result region of right of groin, severe erosion of beach is proceeding till now 1999. In this study, based on the field measurements, involved the one-line theory model which was selected for the prediction of shoreline change to prepare coastal protection methods of Hak-Deng gravel beach. Author found that the storaged sediment estimation model by Sonu and Beek(1971) is useful model at the Hak-Dong gravel beach by the use of topographical survey data from September, 1998 to September, 1999.

We construct improved geocentric digital elevation model (DEM), estimate tidal dynamics and ice stream velocity over Sulzberger Ice Shelf, West Antarctica employing differential interferograms from 12 ERS tandem mission Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images acquired in austral fall of 1996. Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry profiles acquired in the same season as the SAR scenes in 2004 are used as ground control points (GCPs) for Interferometric SAR (InSAR) DEM generation. 20 additional ICESat profiles acquired in 2003-2004 are then used to assess the accuracy of the DEM. The vertical accuracy of the OEM is estimated by comparing elevations with laser altimetry data from ICESat. The mean height difference between all ICESat data and DEM is -0.57m with a standard deviation of 5.88m. We demonstrate that ICESat elevations can be successfully used as GCPs to improve the accuracy of an InSAR derived DEM. In addition, the magnitude and the direction of tidal changes estimated from interferogram are compared with those predicted tidal differences from four ocean tide models. Tidal deformation measured in InSAR is -16.7cm and it agrees well within 3cm with predicted ones from tide models. Lastly, ice surface velocity is estimated by combining speckle matching technique and InSAR line-of-sight measurement. This study shows that the maximum speed and mean speed are 509 m/yr and 131 m/yr, respectively. Our results can be useful for the mass balance study in this area and sea level change.

The granulometric characteristics and chemical composition of the samples from the Bukpyeong myeon, Hainam gun, Jeollanam do were analyzed in this study. The samples were collected from the outcrop of coastal area where the height is about 30m. The burial age of the sediments also estimated by OSL(Optically Stimulated Luminescence) method. The origin and forming processes of the samples are not clear in this stage as limited number of evidences can be found. However it is suggested that the samples are not aeolian deposits originated from chinese loess by the chemical analysis. The mean diameter of samples were $5{\sim}6{\varphi}(silt)$ and are increased slightly downwards. The samples also well sorted. The samples have been heavily weathered by the chemical alteration index. The value of CIA increase downward rapidly at the upper part of outcrop, then stabilized afterwards. The vertical concentration changes ratio of cations varies; Si increases downwards while Fe, Ti, K and Mg decrease. There are fluctuation in concentration ratio of Na and Ca with increasing depth. The burial age of sample from upper part are estimated as $104.52{\pm}4.45ka\;BP$, while that of lower part are $136.10{\pm}6.52ka\;BP$, and they fall in to last part of MS6. The deposition rate for this site is found about 0.017mm/year. The uplift rate of the site is supposed to be 0.24~0.26m/ka with assumption of palaeo-sea level of +6m. However the origin of the sediment deposits should be explored and cleared.

Small islands rely heavily on groundwater resources in addition to rainwater as the source of freshwater since surface water bodies are often absent. The groundwater resources are vulnerable to sea level rise, coastal flooding, saltwater intrusion, irregular pattern of precipitation resulting in long droughts and flash floods. Increase in population increases the demand for the limited groundwater resources, thus aggravating the problem. In this study, the effects of climate change on Tongatapu Island, Kingdom of Tonga, a small island in Pacific Ocean, are investigated using a sharp interface transient groundwater flow model. Twenty nine downscaled General Circulation Model(GCM) predictions are input to a water balance model to estimate the groundwater recharge. The temporal variation in recharge is predicted over the period of 2010 to 2099. A set of GCM models are selected to represent the ensemble of 29 models based on cumulative recharge at the end of the century. This set of GCM model predictions are then used to simulate a total of six climate scenarios, three each (2010-2039, 2040-2069, and 2070-2099) under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. The impacts of predicted climate change on groundwater resources is evaluated in terms of freshwater volume changes and saltwater ratios in pumping wells compared to present conditions. Though the cumulative recharge at the end of the century indicates a wetter climate compared to the present conditions the large variability in rainfall pattern results in frequent periods of groundwater drought leading to saltwater intrusion in pumping wells. Thus for sustaining the limited groundwater resources in small islands, implementation of timely assessment and management practices are of utmost importance.

The significant sedimentation at the estuary in the eastern coast of Korea frequently causes river mouth occlusion where disconnection between the river and sea is observed. River mouth occlusion causing watershed retention raises the environmental risk of the area as it impairs water quality and threatens the area's safety in the event of floods. This study proposes a plan to maintain stability of river channel and flow of flood discharge at the estuary with loss of its function for disaster prevention. To this end, the study tries to change the location and width of stream path, focusing on the center line of stream near the sand bar of river mouth. This allows to identify a shape of stream path that leads the most stable flow. To review the result, this study uses the SRH-2D, a model for two-dimensional hydraulic analysis, and conduct numeric simulation. The simulation result showed that the most effective plan for maintaining the stable flow of running water without having the area sensitive to changes in hydraulic characteristics is to lower the overall river bed height of the sand bar near the center line of stream to a equal level.
The long-term trend of surface wind speed in Korea is estimated by correcting wind measurements at 29 KMA weather stations from 1985 to 2019 with physical and statistical homogenization. The anemometer height changes at each station are first adjusted by applying physical homogenization using the power-law wind profile. The statistical homogenization is then applied to the adjusted data. A standard normal homogeneity test (SNHT) is particularly utilized. Approximately 40% of inhomogeneities detected by the SNHT match with the sea-level-height change of each station, indicating that an SNHT is an effective technique for reconciling data inhomogeneity. The long-term trends are compared with homogenized data. Statistically significant negative trends are observed along the coast, while insignificant trends are dominant inland. The mean trend, averaged over all stations, is -0.03 ± 0.07 m s-1 decade-1. This insignificant trend is due to a trend change across 2001. A decreasing trend of -0.10 m s-1 decade-1 reverses to an increasing trend of 0.03 m s-1 decade-1 from 2001. This trend change is consistent with mid-latitude wind change in the Northern hemisphere, indicating that the long-term trend of surface wind speed in Korea is partly determined by large-scale atmospheric circulation.

The formation of a new world order is primarily caused by new conditions and military operations on the European continent. The intensification of military-political tension led to the formation of new centers of power and gravity, which in turn led to the concentration of weapons and general militarization. Changes in the world order as a result of military conflicts and an increase in hot spots in the world, an increase in threats and the formation of centers of military gravity, the inability of existing institutions to resolve the situation lead to the need to develop new security mechanisms. Studies show that in the current situation, the countries of the Baltic countries are especially actively increasing their level of technologization of the army and militarization in general. The creation of any alliance is always conditioned by the presence of external threats. Naturally, the increase in the number of threats creates preconditions for the development of new forms of cooperation within existing military alliances. It seems obvious that due to the current situation in the context of the military conflict and military aggression of Russia in Ukraine, as well as its constant threats, including to the Baltic countries, there is a need to form a certain alliance that can protect the eastern border of Europe and form a certain border between European countries and aggressor countries. The Baltic countries are actively involved in these processes, in addition, it is the Baltic countries that can enter the new military alliance proposed by Britain, which will unite Poland, Ukraine, the Baltic countries and, possibly, Great Britain.
