The amount of dust generated during the dissolution of scrap in an electric arc furnace is approximately 1.5% of the scrap metal input, and it is primarily collected in a bag filter. Electric arc furnace dust primarily consists of zinc and ion. The processing of zinc starts with its conversion into pellet form by the addition of a carbon-based reducing agent(coke, anthracite) and limestone (C/S control). These pellets then undergo reduction, volatilization, and re-oxidation in rotary kiln or RHF reactor to recover crude zinc oxide (60%w/w). Next, iron is discharged from the electric arc furnace dust as a solid called Fe clinker (secondary by-product of the Fe-base). Several methods are then used to treat the Fe clinker, which vary depending on the country, including landfilling and recycling (e.g., subbase course material, aggregate for concrete, Fe-source for cement manufacturing). However, landfilling has several drawbacks, including environmental pollution due to leaching, high landfill costs, and wastage of iron resources. To improve Fe recovery in the clinker, we pulverized it into optimal -sized particles and employed specific gravity and magnetic force selection methods to isolate this metal. A carbon-based reducing agent and a binding material were added to the separated coarse powder (>10㎛) to prepare briquette clinker. A small amount (1-3%w/w) of the briquette clinker was charged with the scrap in an electric arc furnace to evaluate its feasibility as an additives (carbonaceous material, heat-generating material, and Fe source).

In recent years, design of an optimal blank shape is very important for sheet metal forming process in the automobile industry because the raw material cost rate is significant part in the automobile industry. With the design of an optimal blank shape, the engineer can protect a blank from an excessive holding force to improve the quality and reduce the ratio of material scrap. Therefore design of an optimal blank shape is inevitable in sheet metal forming process. However, if it causes a complicated shape of blank, it may be difficult to do the blank layout optimally. In this study, we developed software of optimal blank layout connected with the software of optimal blank shape design which was created in the past by the present authors. And by using these softwares, we would like to present the method in order to get optimal utilization ratio easily and precisely within short time for the sequence of works from design to blank layout.

Shearing, including blanking, trimming, piercing, etc, is one of the most frequently used processes in sheet metal manufacturing. In this paper, an individual set of tooling with an in-die sensor was designed and precisely fabricated to carry out the experiment for the shearing process investigation. Through various experiments, it has been examined the influence of process parameters such as clearance, edge material properties and pad configuration. Since the tension between the part and the scrap increases when the clearance increases, the clearance should be selected properly in order to reduce the burr height. Also removal of the lower pad makes the sheared surface worse and the shearing system unstable. The shearing force increases when the clearance decreases and the friction of the tooling material decreases. Dynamic reaction force is also important to obtain the fine sheared surfaces.
In this study, we investigate the recycling of aluminum-based metal matrix composites(AMCs) embedded with SiC particulates. The microstructure of the AMCs is characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The possibility of recycling the composite scrap is attempted from the melted alloy and SiC particulates by re-melting, holding and solidification in crucibles. The recovery percentage of the matrix alloy is calculated after a number of holding times, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes and for different particulate sizes and weight fractions in the Al matrix. The results show that the recovery percentage of the matrix alloy, as well as the time required for maximum recovery of the matrix, is dependent on the size and weight fraction of SiC particulates. In addition, the percentage recovery increases with particulate size but drops with the particulate fraction in the matrix. The time to reach maximum recovery falls rapidly with an increase in particulate size and fraction.
A recovery process of Ruthenium from waste electronic scrap has been investigated by means of nitric acid leaching as a part of development for scrap pretreatment process to obtaining an optimum conditions for removal of removing various impurities such as Pb, Bi, Zn, Al, Bi, Ag Fe, Co, Zr, Si. From the experiments, 90% of Pb leached with 250 g/l pulp density in 10-15% nitric acid. Leaching behavior of Ba was also similar to that of the Pb, but those of other metal impurities, such as Zn, Al, Bi, Ag, Fe, Co, Zr, showed different behavior, in which the dissolution rate increased as the concentration of nitric acid in solution is increased up to the 10% $HNO_3$ in solution and then it was constant above 10% $HNO_3$ concentrations. Meanwhile, the dissolution of Ru in $HNO_3$ solution was less then 100ppm, and that the total content of Ru in undissolved residue scrap was resulted in an increment of 50%.
In this study, plasma arc remelting behaviors according to arc current, arc voltage, and types of plasma gas were investigated using Kroll processed Ti sponges as anode. In the discharge pressure range of vacuum pump ($200{\sim}300kgf/cm^2$), the arc voltage did not vary greatly with the increase of discharge pressure at a given arc length. This means that the pressure in the vacuum chamber during operation hardly changes and the atmospheric pressure maintains. Under various conditions of arc currents (700~900A), the arc voltage slightly increased with arc current. The effects of anode materials and operational variables on the arc length-arc voltage relationship were compared with the results in previous studies. When the atmospheric gas changed from argon to helium, double effect of improvement on the output of the steady state was observed. The increase of output in the plasma arc device was accompanied by an increase in the melting rate of the Ti sponge and the quality of the ingot surface was also improved. The plasma arc remelting of the new scrap titanium and the old scrap zirconium alloy could result in the fabrication of an ingot with high surface quality.
The rapid increase in the consumption of products that contain rare metals has highlighted the importance of recycling and recovering resources from these products when they enter the waste stream. Among various metal resources that can be recovered, this study analyzes the waste streams of cobalt and palladium to determine how their waste resource circulation can be improved at each stage of the waste stream. The findings of this study point to improvements and strategies that can be made at individual stages. First, at the discharge/import stage, the implementation of tariff quotas for specific recycled metal resources is suggested to allow the systemic categorization of waste metals as resources. At the collection/discarding stage, a major problem is the instability in the supply of scrap metals, which may be better managed by changing the bidding process for the scrap metals. At the pretreatment stage, possible areas for improvement are uncovered concerning technical areas, such as technological development and improving the efficiency of material recycling, as well as policy-wise, for instance, expanding the regulation for manufacturers to produce products that are designed to facilitate resource recovery, increasing incentive for closed recycling, and refining the guidelines and standards for recycling. At the resource recovery stage, as the waste metal recycling industry consists of businesses that vary in size, policies to promote cooperation and coexistence between large and smaller enterprises will benefit the industry in the long-run. Lastly, at the product production/export stage, a tariff on exporting waste resources that contain cobalt and palladium will help control the amount of waste metals that are shipped abroad.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate several leading options for the management of radioactive metallic waste against a set of general criteria including safety, cost effectiveness, radiological dose to workers and volume reduction. Several options for managing metallic waste generated from decommissioning are evaluated in this paper. These options include free release, controlled reuse, and direct disposal of radioactive metallic waste. Each of these options may involve treatment of the metal waste for volume reduction by physical cutting or melting. A multi-criteria decision analysis was performed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to rank the options. Melting radioactive metallic waste to produce metal ingots with controlled reuse or free release is found to be the most effective option.

The problem of determining the optimum metal plating thicknesses on the plane and curved surfaces of an electronic part is considered. A lower specification limit for the plating thickness is usually pre-specified. In most applications, the plating thickness on the curved surface is proportional to that on the plane surface. The proportion can be adjusted by adding chemical catalysts to the plating fluid. From the economic point of view, nonconforming items with a thickness smaller than the lower specification limit incur rejection costs, such as rework and scrap costs, while a thicker plating may incur an excessive material costs. In this article, an economic model is proposed for simultaneously determining the target plating thickness and the ratio of the plating thickness on the plane surface to that on the curved surface. An illustrative example demonstrates the applicability of the proposed model.

Rare earth magnets with excellent magnetic properties are indispensable in the electric device, wind turbine, and e-mobility industries. The demand for the development of eco-friendly recycling techniques has increased to realize sustainable green technology, and the supply of rare earth resources, which are critical for the production of permanent magnets, are limited. Liquid metal extraction (LME), which is a type of pyrometallurgical recycling, is known to selectively extract the metal forms of rare earth elements. Although several studies have been carried out on the formation of intermetallic compounds and oxides, the effect of oxide formation on the extraction efficiency in the LME process remains unknown. In this study, microstructural and phase analyses are conducted to confirm the oxidation behavior of magnets pulverized by a jaw crusher. The LME process is performed with pulverized scrap, and extraction percentages are calculated to confirm the effect of the oxide phases on the extraction of Dy during the reaction. During the L ME process, Nd is completely extracted after 6 h, while Dy remains as Dy2Fe17 and Dy-oxide. Because the decomposition rate of Dy2Fe17 is faster than the reduction rate of Dy-oxide, the importance of controlling Dy-oxide on Dy extraction is confirmed.
