  • In recent years, the Internet was a lot of information on the use of Tesla coils bifilar [1] in conjunction with induction cooker, for "free" electricity during power resistive load, including different incandescent lamps. With the development of scientific and technological progress, the demand for electricity in each year is increasing, and at the same time, the need to increase the capacity of electricity production, which entails large investments and, consequently, increase of prices for consumers. As before today, the search for free electric energy is an up-to-date and still open topic. The purpose of research - simplification of information on the possibility of using bifilar coils as an electric current source in conjunction with induction cooker. Consequently, it can be concluded from the above that the use of Tesla coils in combination with induction cooker has very low k.k.d. and it is not possible to obtain excessive electric energy using the Tesla coil under the connection schemes considered.

  • We report the development of full-field swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in the wavelength range of 815-870 nm using a unique combination of super-luminescent diode (SLD) as broad-band light source and acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) as a frequency-scanning device. Some new applications of full-field SS-OCT in forensic sciences and engineering materials have been demonstrated. Results of simultaneous topography and tomography of latent fingerprints, silicon microelectronic circuits and composite materials are presented. The main advantages of the present system are completely non-mechanical scanning, wide-field, compact and low-cost.

  • This study investigated students' alternative conceptions of plate boundaries and their conception revision according to the pattern of students' reasoning. Participants were twenty-two 10th grade high school students. All participants were asked to draw the three types of plate boundaries and to explain their drawings. Nine students participated in the reasoning activity. To this end, a semi-structured interview was conducted during which key questions were asked for the students to individually answer. The key questions used in the reasoning activity were created, by utilizing questions used in the previous studies. The findings revealed that the alternative conceptions of plate boundaries were classified into three levels based on established criteria. Students who attempted a variety of reasoning strategies such as causal reasoning, using an analogy, abductive reasoning, data reconstruction and concept combination, revised their alternative conception to a scientific conception after the reasoning activity. On the other hand, some students could not revise their alternative conceptions because they only conducted an incomplete reasoning strategy. The study also found that they were unable to use other reasoning strategies, either.

  • The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is currently widespread and appears to be growing. As an increasing proportion of the population turns to CAM therapies, whether singly or in combination with allopathic medicine, the need for quality research in this area is reinforced. Much of this research consists of clinical studies aim ed primarily at clinicians, yet challenges arising from poor methodological quality will occur w hen interpreting study findings and their implications. For clinicians to be effective consumers of the scientific literature, familiarization with the principles of evidence based medicine (EBM) is essential. The goal of this review is to introduce clinicians to the concept of critical appraisal of clinical studies and foster critical thinking when reading research articles in order to best evaluate and incorporate study findings into their daily practice.

  • The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is a statistical method particularly suitable and versatile for dealing with many problems concerning wind engineering and several other scientific and humanist fields. POD represents a random process as a linear combination of deterministic functions, the POD modes, modulated by uncorrelated random coefficients, the principal components. It owes its popularity to the property that only few terms of the series are usually needed to capture the most energetic coherent structures of the process, and a link often exists between each dominant mode and the main mechanisms of the phenomenon. For this reason, POD modes are normally used to identify low-dimensional subspaces appropriate for the construction of reduced models. This paper provides a state-of-the-art and some prospects on POD, with special regard to its framework and applications in wind engineering. A wide bibliography is also reported.

  • Blood pressure measurement (BPM) is an essential part of medical examination, and therefore accuracy of BPM devices is crucial. Over the past few years, there has been a rise in new BPM techniques using photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals and complex algorithms for blood pressure estimation. Especially the combination of a mobile device or a smartphone with a camera using PPG may potentially revolutionize BPM in the future. The first-ever BPM application to be approved as a medical device was one by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in 2020, despite the lack of robust scientific evidence proving its validity. While the prospect of using these novel BPM devices is an opportunity, there are also some critical issues around calibration and utility in different patient groups that need to be resolved before they can be incorporated into daily clinical practice.

  • Although the functional ingredient has been evaluated based on scientific evidence by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), the levels of scientific evidence and consistency of the results might vary according to the emerging data. Therefore, a periodic re-evaluation may be needed in some functional ingredients. In this study, we re-evaluated the scientific evidence for the joint health of glucosamine as a functional ingredient in health functional food. Literature searches were conducted using Pubmed, Cochrane, KISS, and IBIDS databases with the search term of glucosamine in combination with osteoarthritis. The search was limited to human studies published in English, Korean and Japanese. Using the MFDS's evidence based evaluation system for scientific evaluation of health claims, 34 human studies were identified and reviewed in order to evaluate the strength of the evidence supporting the relation between glucosamine and joint health. Among the 34 studies, significant effects for joint health were reported in 28 studies, and their daily intake amount was 1.5 to 2 g. Eleven out of 34 studies were identified, excluding severe radiographic osteoarthritis, and ten from those eleven studies reported significant effects for joint health. Based on this systematic review, we concluded that there was possible evidence to support a relation between glucosamine intake and joint health.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions of high school students and science teachers about high school fusing science. Science teachers and high school students perceived that high school fusing science was related to various areas and they preferred to be taught separately from each area. Science teachers perceived that high school fusing science improved the understanding in the area of scientific common knowledge, advanced technology, and the history of science, but neither scientific writing nor discussion were actively involved. It also didn't contribute to the enhancement of scientific thinking and communication skill. Especially, high school students believed that they were more interested in science through fusing science. On the other hand, teachers believed that this high school fusing science might not impact student's learning and generate negative perception. Science teachers and students perceived that they were more interested in fusing science because it was combination of many areas in science. They also perceived that contents in fusing science were more related to their daily life.

  • Since successive operations under the acupuncture analgesia have been reported In China 1971, veterinary acupuncture was brought to the attention over the world and then its research and clinical use have markedly developed. Veterinary acupuncture and moxibustion was originated in China and Korea, but the research activities on them were not very significantly advanced. In this study, status of veterinarians on veterinary acupuncture and moxibustion, acupunctures which has been practiced by civil acupuncturist, therapeutic effects of acupuncture for the animal diseases in the field, and effects of electric acupuncture on the lumen motility in ruminants, etc. were Investigated. One-fifty of veterinarians of private clinics in Korea was interested in acupuncture and moxibustion in veterinary medicine. A lot of veterinarians required the scientific, systemic technique and knowledge or acupuncture. Civil acupuncturists who have been practiced acupuncture and moxibustion were 20 persons, and most of them were very old. They used chiefly three edged needles which were made by themselves and utilized old traditional technique in which the acupoints were stimulated and bled. Treatment with acupuncture for the digestive, muscular locomotive and febrile diseases was very effective. Until nowadays, the research on veterinary acupuncture in Korea has not much progressed. However, the Korean Societh of Veterinary Acupuncture and Moxibustion was organized in 1990. Valuable development for acupuncture through the society are expected. Electroacupuncture regional analgesia on the combinations of Yao-Pang 1, 2 and 4 acupoints was very effective for abdominal operations in cattle. But a lot of experiences and studies on the acupuncture anesthesia were required for clinical use in the future. Therapeutic effects of about 80% were obtained from electroacupuncture on the combinations of Tian Ping-Bai Hui-Shi Zhang, and Guan Yuan Yu acupoints in cattle with luminal atony and tympany In the field. Electroacupuncture on the combination of Tian Ping-Bai Hui-Qi Men, and Tian Ping-Bai Bui-Wei Gen for the treatment of downer cow was not so effective. The effects of stimulation and bleeding from acupoint by three edged needle was excellent for febrile diseases. The luminal contractile movement was accentuated by electroacupuncture on Tian Ping-Bai Hui-Shi Zhang combination and Guan Yuan Yu acupoint. It was concluded that veterinary acupuncture and moxibustion should be utilized for veterinary practice, and the advanced scientific research and clinical experiences must be followed.

  • The main objective of this study is to evaluate the long-term performance of various concrete composites in natural marine environment prevailing in the Gulf region. Durability assessment studies of such nature are usually carried out under aggressive environments that constitute seawater, chloride and sulfate laden soils and wind, and groundwater conditions. These studies are very vital for sustainable development of marine and off shore reinforced concrete structures of industrial design such as petroleum installations. First round of testing and evaluation, which is presented in this paper, were performed by standard tests under laboratory conditions. Laboratory results presented in this paper will be corroborated with test outcome of ongoing three years field exposure conditions. The field study will include different parameters of investigation for high performance concrete including corrosion inhibitors, type of reinforcement, natural and industrial pozzolanic additives, water to cement ratio, water type, cover thickness, curing conditions, and concrete coatings. Like the laboratory specimens, samples in the field will be monitored for corrosion induced deterioration signs and for any signs of failureover initial period ofthree years. In this paper, laboratory results pertaining to microsilica (SF), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), epoxy coated rebars and calcium nitrite corrosion inhibitor are very conclusive. Results affirmed that the supplementary cementing materials such as GGBS and SF significantly impacted and enhanced concrete resistivity to chloride ions penetration and hence decrease the corrosion activities on steel bars protected by such concretes. As for epoxy coated rebars applications under high chloride laden conditions, results showed great concern to integrity of the epoxy coating layer on the bar and its stability. On the other hand corrosion inhibiting admixtures such as calcium nitrite proved to be more effective when used in combination with the pozzolanic additives such as GGBS and microsilica.
