A Case Study for Interactive Learning between Visitors and Exhibits in a Natural History Hall Focused on the Discourse Flow and the Modes of Visitors' Own Interactions (관람 대화의 흐름과 상호작용의 양상에 기반한 자연사 전시관의 전시물과 관람객 간 상호작용적 학습 사례 연구)

  • This study investigated several cases of interactive learning mediated by exhibits in a natural history hall during visits by middle school students. Five visiting cases were selected, in which visitors engaged actively in the interactions between them. Each visiting case was analyzed in terms of visiting discourse register and the modes of interaction in order to understand both visitors' meaning-making processes through the discourse flow and the characteristics of visiting discourse according to the features of exhibits. Results were as follows. The information provided in the exhibits was used as THEMEs in visitors' discourse and the visitors presented their information on the THEMEs as RHEMEs. The visitors made their own meaning for the exhibits by exchanging their information with each other. Interrogative sentences on the exhibit panels allowed visitors to make arguments. Similar exhibits displayed together helped visitors to compare those exhibits. These two features of the exhibits facilitated visitors' meaning-making processes in the natural history hall. The modes of interaction between visitors mediated by the exhibits showed that the information itself from the exhibits as well as visitors' opinion on the exhibits were frequently used as the elements for in-depth cognitive social interactions that allowed the visitors to construct meaning. Based on these results, we discussed that understanding in detail how visitors choose information from exhibits and construct visiting discourse is very important to improve visitors' collaborative science learning at a natural history hall.

Exploring Scientific Reasoning in Elementary Science Classroom Discourses (초등 과학 수업 담화에서 나타나는 과학적 추론 탐색)

  • This study aims to explore scientific reasoning that students and their teachers constructed in elementary science classroom discourses in terms of basic reasoning types; deduction, induction, and abduction. For this research, data were collected from 13 classes of 4th grade science activities during a period of three months and analyzed three types of scientific reasoning in elementary school science discourses. We found that deduction (one discourse segment), induction (one discourse segment), and deduction-abduction (two discourse segments) were presented in the discourses. They showed that: first, scientific reasoning proceeded explicitly or implicitly in elementary science discourses; second, the students and their teachers have potentials to increase the quality of reasoning depending on their inter-subjectivity; and last, the students' background knowledge were very important in the development of their reasoning. Implication and remarks on science education and research were presented based on this results as well.

An Analysis of Classroom Discourse as an Epistemic Practice: Based on Elementary Science Classrooms (인식 행위로서 수업 담화 분석: 초등 과학 수업을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the epistemic process in elementary science classrooms by analyzing classroom discourse as a epistemic practice. Data came from four elementary teachers in the form of video-recordings. A total of 12 elementary science lessons were examined to reveal the discursive modes and sequences in which the teacher and students participated when they constructed and developed scientific knowledge during the lessons. Three representative discursive patterns were found in the elementary science lessons explored: (i) 'Retrieving-Retrieving-${\cdots}$' by which well-established scientific knowledge was retrieved repeatedly, (ii) 'Exploring-Building on the Shared' which allowed introducing new scientific knowledge based on the scientific phenomena explored by the teacher and students together through practical work, and (iii) 'Retrieving-Elaborating/Reformulating/Narrating' or 'Building on the Shared-Elaborating/Reformulating/Narrating' which expanded and strengthened scientific knowledge already learned. These discursive patterns were suggested as discursive-epistemic mechanisms employed frequently in the epistemic process in elementary science lessons and as a basis for defining epistemic cultures of science classrooms.

An Exploratory Analysis of Discourse Types and Meaning-making Strategies Used by a Beginning Teacher in Secondary Science Class (담화양상과 의미형성전략에 관한 초임 교사의 중등 과학수업 사례 탐색)

  • This study analyzed discourse types and meaning making strategies used in a secondary beginning science teacher's class. A voluntary middle school science teacher participated in this study, and her instruction was observed and videotaped. The analysis consisted of two parts. First, we categorized the types of discourses occurred in class. Second, we examined her instructional strategies used through meaning making practices at the micro-level. Results indicated that there were five episodes emerged representing different discourse types and meaning making strategies in the beginning teacher's lesson about 'the pathway and property of light'. Conclusion and implications for further study and teacher professional development were presented in the paper.

The Types and Features of Gestures in Science Discourse of Elementary Students (초등학생의 과학 담화에서 나타나는 몸짓의 유형과 특징)

  • Gestures are a common phenomenon of human communication. There exists little research concerned with the gestures in science education, and most researches of gestures have focused on individual gestures. However, learning occurs through sociocultural interactions with friends, family, teachers, and others in society. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate and identify the types and features of gestures which were made by elementary students to communicate with peers in science discourse. A group of six fourth-graders was observed in eight science discourses where they talked about ideas related to thermal concepts. The data was collected through interviews and questionnaires. The analysis of the data showed that students' gestures in science discourses could be classified into seven types: signal iconic gesture, illustrative iconic gesture, personal deictic gesture, object deictic gesture, beat gesture, emotional metaphoric gesture, and content metaphoric gesture. It was also found that these gestures had functions of repeating, supplementing, and replacing utterance to communicate with others. Students frequently expressed scientific terms metaphorically as everyday terms through their gestures. Gestures were shared, imitated, and transferred in the communication process, and students' gestures also made influence on other students' ideas through these processes.

Discourse Analysis for Deriving Characteristics of Science-gifted Elementary Students in Inquiry Activities (초등과학영재 특성 도출을 위한 탐구활동에서의 담화분석)

  • A Discourse Analysis tool has been developed and has been applied in the cooperative group inquiry activities in order to derive the characteristics of elementary gifted students in science. We recorded and videotaped the whole group problem-solving processes where 4 elementary students worked together to solve given problems as a group for one year in a gifted education center attached to a university in Seoul. We analyzed recorded discourses using systemic functional linguistics with a focus on the structure of information and topic. The discourse analysis tool was developed with the cooperation of science education and gifted education experts. In discourse analysis, we focused on meaning development processes rather than grammatical analysis. Through application of newly developed discourse analysis tool, we confirmed that the tool is useful in understanding the characteristics of science-gifted elementary students. We also founded that the interaction between students has significant effects on problem-solving processes by comparing two students who showed contradictory features in the share of dialogue. In addition, the result suggested that we need to provide students with proper training for ways to communicate with others for effective science-gifted instruction.

The Effect of Discourse-typed Inquiry Learning Program Fitted with POE on High School Student's Academic Achievement and Attitude Toward Science (POE를 적용한 논술형 탐구학습 프로그램 활용 수업이 고등학생들의 학업 성취도와 과학 관련 태도에 미치는 효과)

  • The research is aimed at investigating the development and application of high school biology classes utilizing discourse-typed inquiry learning program fitted with POE, and the corresponding effect on student's academic achievement and attitude toward science. 4 classes of 11th graders in a general high school located in Busan were selected as subjects. Biology I, 'Circulation' unit was lectured for 4 weeks (6 classes), and the experimental group underwent classes utilizing discourse-typed inquiry learning program fitted with POE. The control group was taught identical major learning contents, but based on the learning objectives and research activities provided by Biology I textbook. As a result of application, first, the discourse-typed inquiry learning program fitted with POE exhibited positive consequences of linking previously acquired knowledge and the new learning attained through experiments, as well as not only improving the students' problem solving capacity through diverging questions from the teachers to drive the students' higher-level contemplation, but also enhancing student academic achievement by assisting their logical thinking. Second, POE-fitted discourse-typed inquiry learning program rendered presupposing session of the experiment that resulted in drawing learners' attention in advance, and incited active participation in the learning process through solving the contradiction between what was actually observed and what was expected, which eventually proved to lay out positive impact on students' attitude toward science.

Discourse Analysis in Library and Information Science Research (문헌정보학에 있어서 담론분석의 응용)

  • Library and information science(LIS) research, as reflected in its own disciplinary and professional history, has been ignorant of the transitions and developments of other humanities and social science disciplines. For instance, the positivistic perspectives in research have been maintained in the field while other disciplines have been experimenting wide variety of research methods and aspects. This paper attempts to articulate that LIS research should play an appropriate role in analyzing and investigating various key-words in modern knowledge society. In this regard it scrutinizes the applicability and implications of discourse analysis. It specifically surveys the historical background of the development of LIS research; then it explains the dimensions of discourse analysis and some principles; and, finally it shows some examples of research projects that emp1oy these perspectives.

  • Typography has two aspects, form and meaning. It is a collaboration of elements both to be read and to be seen. Typographer has to consider that typography has a meaning from only visual form as well as various meanings from every receiver. Because meaning could be differently translated through their cultures, experiences and so on. New visual communication style, typography as discourse, is not one-way communication, but dialogue communication.
