  • 'Learning with a robot' is now considered as one of the best candidates for STEAM education, which is recently growing its importance. Most of the 'learning with a robot' programs in elementary schools serve as afterschool classes. The students participating in the afterschool classes are mostly boys who are interested in science and robots. This paper mainly concerns that a robot can be helpful for improving students' interest in STEAM education. We divided the robot utilizable aspects into 5 areas with educational points of view; abstract concept understanding type, structure-oriented type, athletics-oriented type, intelligence-oriented type and value-orientated type. We extracted all robot utilizable subjects and units from elementary school curriculum, and developed lesson plans which can be applicable to regular classes. And we also verified them by applying into an elementary school for 5 months. As the result of the analysis, we can conclude that 'learning with a robot' can encourage students' interest in STEAM, and it is more effective for girls than boys. Finally, we discuss problems that teachers may face in using a robot for regular classes, and make suggestions about the use of a robot for STEAM education.

  • Regarding the formula for measuring the area of a circle, the Archimedes' constant is generally written in front of the square of radius length, but there were a few cases where the Archimedes' constant was written after that in Germany and France. In this study, two things are studied: First, how many students are writing the Archimedes' constant after that? Second, what do the students think about the written order of characters in the formula for measuring the area of a circle? In the online survey of 201 people aged 14 to 21 in Korea, there was a perception of more than 86% that both are possible or only after that are possible. In this study, it is suggested that there is a difference between the general written order of characters and the natural perception of students formed through school education. In addition, students aged 14 to 16 thought more that the Archimedes' constant should be written after that, and after that age, there was a greater perception that both are possible without confusion of meaning. It can be seen that the change in students' perception has emerged through school education on natural mathematical written order of characters after middle school courses. From this point of view, the most common perception can be that if there is no confusion in meaning, then both expressions are possible.

  • We examined the effects of pair assistant collaborative learning on academic achievement of the 2nd year middle school students in the three subjects such as the Probability, Properties of Figures and Similarities of Figures. In order to carry out this study, we selected 2 classes of 2nd year students in a girls middle school in the Fall semester of 2009 and set up the experiment group and comparison group by the result of academic achievement tests given in the end of the Spring semester of 2009. Pair assistant collaborative learning was adopted for students in problem solving 2 or 3 times per a week in the experiment group and each academic achievement was given at the end of each subject in both groups. Also, we had a final survey to find out students' attitude to this collaborative learning. The achievement and survey were analysed by statistical methods. We conclude that our pair assistant collaborative learning was effective in Probability and Similarities of Figures Units. According to the result of survey, this collaborative learning brought about an opportunity to promote students' community spirit through reflecting each one's role in the group.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope the more effective chemistry teaching strategy through analyzing the demanded cognitive levels of contents in high school chemistry I textbooks and the cognitive levels of students who learn these textbooks. For this purpose, the levets of cognitive development stages of 821 second grade students of high schools in Seoul City were anaIyzed using the GALT short version test. The demanded cognitive levels of understanding the contents of chemistry I textbooks in high school were analyzed using the curriculum analysis taxonomy developed by CSMS (Concept in Secondaly Mathematics and Science) program of the Great Britain. The resuIts showed that the proportion of students in the concrete operational stage, the transition stage, and the formal operational stage was l0.7%, 43.0% and 46.3%, respectively. The demanded levels of textbook contents were mostly the early formal operational stages. The concepts demanded the level of the late formal operational stage were 'atomic and molecular weight', 'stoichiometry of chemical reaction', and 'periodic properties of elements'. The results will be helpful for teachers in knowing what concepts are difficult for students to understand and in planning strategies for teaching those concepts. To demonstrate the application of the results obtained in this study, an example of developing teaching strategy which includes the adjustment of cognitive level of contents was shown.

  • In this paper, we analyzed wage determinants of the vocational high school graduates utilizing both individual-level and work region-level variables. We formulate the models in the way wage determination has multi-level structure in the sense that individual wage is influenced by individual-level variables (level-1) and work region-level (level-2) variables. To incorporate dependency between individual wages into the model, we utilize hierarchical linear model (HLM). The major results are as follows. First, it is shown that the HLM model is better than the OLS regression models which do not take level-1 and level-2 variables simultaneously into account. Second, random effects on sex, maester dummy and engineering dummy variables are statistically significant. Third, the fixed effects on business hours and mean wage of regular job for level-2 variables are statistically significant effect individual-level wages. Finally, parental education level, parental income, number of licenses and high school grade are statistically significant for higher individual-level wages.

  • The comprehensive implication in justification activity that includes the proof in the elementary school level where the logical and formative verification is hard to come has to be instructed. Therefore, this study has set the following issues. First, what is the mathematical justification type shown in the Number and Operations, and Geometry? Second, what are the errors shown by students in the justification process? In order to solve these research issues, the test was implemented on 62 third grade elementary school students in D City and analyzed the mathematical justification type. The research result could be summarized as follows. First, in solving the justification type test for the number and operations, students evenly used the empirical justification type and the analytical justification type. Second, in the geometry, the ratio of the empirical justification was shown to be higher than the analytical justification, and it had a difference from the number and operations that evenly disclosed the ratio of the empirical justification and the analytical justification. And third, as a result of analyzing the errors of students occurring during the justification process, it was shown to show in the order of the error of omitting the problem solving process, error of concept and principle, error in understanding the questions, and technical error. Therefore, it is prudent to provide substantial justification experiences to students. And, since it is difficult to correct the erroneous concept and mistaken principle once it is accepted as familiar content that it is required to find out the principle accepted in error or mistake and re-instruct to correct it.

  • This study proposes a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program for career exploration of middle school students. The proposed program utilizes VR (Virtual Reality) for new digital technology and webtoon as a popular cultural element. It enables the students to investigate promising fields and experience them virtually for themselves. We design the program based on the 2015 revised curriculum, which enhances the learning effects with existing subjects. In particular, the program provides a hybrid education to combine contact and untact classes considering the COVID-19 situation. The educational goal of the proposed program is to improve creativity and convergence capability. Specifically, it aims to prepare an educational foundation that integrates new digital technologies into education and applies the programs to school education fields. To prove the effectiveness of the developed program, we applied the program to the second graders of A middle school located in Seoul. We expect that the proposed program helps students learn how to utilize new digital technologies and explore future career paths.

  • Quality of Protection(QoP) provides a standard that can evaluate networks offering protection. Also, QoP estimates stability of the system by quantifying intensity of the security. Security should be established based on the circumstance which applied to appropriate level, and this should chose a security policy which fit to propose of network because it is not always proportioned that between stability of security mechanism which is used at network and performance which has to be supported by system. With evolving wireless networks, a variety of security services are defined for providing secure wireless network services. In this paper, we propose a new QoP model which makes up for weak points of existing QoP model to choose an appropriate security policy for wireless network. Proposed new QoP model use objectively organized HVM by Flow-based Abnormal Traffic Detection Algorithm for constructing Utility function and relative weight for constructing Total reward function.

  • The purpose of this case study is to compare and analyze the covariational reasoning levels of two middle school students revealed in the process of solving and generalizing algebra word problems. A class was conducted with two middle school students who had not learned quadratic equations in school mathematics. During the retrospective analysis after the class was over, a noticeable difference between the two students was revealed in solving algebra word problems, including situations where speed changes. Accordingly, this study compared and analyzed the level of covariational reasoning revealed in the process of solving or generalizing algebra word problems including situations where speed is constant or changing, based on the theoretical framework proposed by Thompson & Carlson(2017). As a result, this study confirmed that students' covariational reasoning levels may be different even if the problem-solving methods and results of algebra word problems are similar, and the similarity of problem-solving revealed in the process of solving and generalizing algebra word problems was analyzed from a covariation perspective. This study suggests that in the teaching and learning algebra word problems, rather than focusing on finding solutions by quickly converting problem situations into equations, activities of finding changing quantities and representing the relationships between them in various ways.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze Korean middle school student achievement in environmental science based on the TIMSS 2003 (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study), a student comparison of 46 participating nations. Korea ranked the fourth with a mean score of 554 in environmental science. However, all 3 environment science topics assessed in TIMSS are not included in the Korean science curriculum through 8th grade, even though they are included in most other participating nations' curricula. The average percent correct of items was analyzed according to the main topic, the item type and the cognitive domain. Items that showed differences between the average percent correct of Korea and the international average as well as differences between the average percent correct of boys and girls were further analyzed. Results revealed that Korean students performed better than the international average, especially in 'use and conservation of natural resources', multiple-choice items, and items requiring 'factual knowledge'. Also, male students demonstrated significantly higher achievement than female students. On the other hand, Korean students showed relatively lower achievement in constructed-response items, items that contained content they had not learned in science lessons and items requiring descriptions of the uses and effect of science and technology. Moreover, Korean student lacked understanding about acid rain, global warming, and ozone layer destruction. Korean female students showed relatively lower environmental conceptions and lower performance on items requiring data analysis than Korean male students. On the basis of these results, this study suggested that topics of environmental science be included in the science curriculum and taught in the science classroom to help middle school students more fully comprehend environmental issues.
