  • This study purposed to analyze difference in experience of life in Korea among adolescents whose immigrant backgrounds were different (Korean-born children of multicultural families and foreign-born immigrant children) using the data of the 2012 National Survey of Multicultural Families (adolescent children aged between 9 and 24). According to the results of analysis, first, multicultural adolescents with immigrant backgrounds experienced 'difficulty in using the Korean language (speaking, listening, reading, and writing),' 'school dropout,' and 'school violence' more frequently than Korean-born multicultural adolescents. Second, with regard to social discrimination (friends, teachers, relatives, neighbors, and unknown people), multicultural adolescents with immigrant backgrounds experienced 'discrimination by teachers,' 'discrimination by relatives,' 'discrimination by neighbors,' and 'discrimination by unknown people' more frequently than Korean-born multicultural adolescents. By analyzing these differences, this study suggested directions for differentiated support policies and specific strategies for adjustment to life in Korea by multicultural family adolescents with different backgrounds.

  • Although the accuracy of handwritten character recognition based on deep networks has been shown to be superior to that of the traditional method, the use of an overly deep network significantly increases time consumption during parameter training. For this reason, this paper took the training time and recognition accuracy into consideration and proposed a novel handwritten character recognition algorithm with newly designed network structure, which is based on an extended nonlinear kernel residual network. This network is a non-extremely deep network, and its main design is as follows:(1) Design of an unsupervised apriori algorithm for intra-class clustering, making the subsequent network training more pertinent; (2) presentation of an intermediate convolution model with a pre-processed width level of 2;(3) presentation of a composite residual structure that designs a multi-level quick link; and (4) addition of a Dropout layer after the parameter optimization. The algorithm shows superior results on MNIST and SVHN dataset, which are two character benchmark recognition datasets, and achieves better recognition accuracy and higher recognition efficiency than other deep structures with the same number of layers.

  • Today most of Korean students have no interest in mathematics and lack of confidence in it due to the burden of the college entrance examination, which often results in a failure or a dropout in mathematics in school. Therefore there is a need to diagnose the true causes and to find out a solution. As one of these solutions this study has developed and applied a learning model based upon cooperative group activities for the improvement of mathematical power to classroom. For developing this learning model a variety of research methods are used; questionnaires, observation, and analysis of the interview materials. After the application of this learning model, a lot of positive results in mathematics class have been observed.

  • Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the relationships among the lifetime incidence of trauma, internalizing symptoms, and quality of life (QoL) in out-of-school youths (OSYs). Methods: We recruited 50 OSYs in South Korea. Participants completed the following surveys: completed Lifetime Incidence of Traumatic Events for children, Youth Self Report, and The KIDSCREEN-27 QoL measure for children and adolescents. Mediation analysis was conducted to test the research hypotheses. Results: The mean lifetime incidence of traumatic events among OSYs was 3.27 (standard deviation, 2.41). Internalizing symptoms significantly mediated the lifetime incidence of trauma and QoL. OSYs with fewer internalizing symptoms exhibited a better QoL in the domain of psychological well-being, although their lifetime incidence of trauma was higher. Conclusion: The results of current study suggest that assessment and therapeutic intervention with regard to internalizing symptoms are needed to increase the QoL of OSYs.

  • Most of the variable shading devices are installed outdoors, so they are greatly affected by structural safety due to external climate change, wind, rain, and snow. Especially, due to strong wind such as typhoons, safety problems may occur due to the dropout of the device. Therefore, it is necessary to secure the structural safety against the wind. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the structural behavior of the windshield to evaluate the structural safety of the variable sunshade device. In this study, we analyze the wind pressure applied to the shading material according to the change of the length of the variable shading device, and apply it to the calculation of the wind load for the structural design of the variable shading device. The CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) analysis of the structure of the sample was used to analyze wind pressure magnitude and distribution. In order to estimate the wind pressure, the maximum wind loads of the static and negative pressures acting on the structure were analyzed from numerical simulation results.

  • This article introduces the R package ELCIC (https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/ELCIC/index.html), which provides an empirical likelihood-based information criterion (ELCIC) for model selection that includes, but is not limited to, variable selection. The empirical likelihood is a semi-parametric approach to draw statistical inference that does not require distribution assumptions for data generation. Therefore, ELCIC is more robust and versatile in the context of model selection compared to the currently existing information criteria. This paper illustrates several applications of ELCIC, including its use in generalized linear models, generalized estimating equations (GEE) for longitudinal data, and weighted GEE (WGEE) for missing longitudinal data under the mechanisms of missing at random and dropout.

  • This paper presents a low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator using ultra-low output impedance buffer for frequency compensation. The proposed buffer achieves ultra low output impedance with dual shunt feedback loops, which makes it possible to improve load and line regulations as well as frequency compensation for low voltage applications. A reference control scheme for programmable output voltage of the LDO linear regulator is presented. The designed LDO linear regulator works under the input voltage of 2.5~4.5V and provides up to 300mA load current for an output voltage range of 0.6~3.3V.

  • Background: Clinical trials on cancer subjects have one of the highest dropout rates. Barriers to recruitment range from patient-related, through institutional-related to staff-related factors. This paper highlights the low response rate and the recruitment barriers faced in our Qigong exercises trial. Materials and Method: The Qigong trial is a three-arm trial with a priori power size of 114 patients for 80% power. The University Malaya Medical Centre database showed a total of 1,933 patients from 2006-2010 and 751 patients met our inclusion criteria. These patients were approached via telephone interview. 131 out of 197 patients attended the trial and the final response rate was 48% (n=95/197). Results: Multiple barriers were identified, and were regrouped as patient-related, clinician-related and/or institutional related. A major consistent barrier was logistic difficulty related to transportation and car parking at the Medical Centre. Conclusions: All clinical trials must pay considerable attention to the recruitment process and it should even be piloted to identify potential barriers and facilitators to reduce attrition rate in trials.

  • This study examines the mediating effect of self-esteem in the path between parental attachment and career barriers for out-of-school youth and proposes measures to reduce the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. As analysis data, we used data from the 5th year of the panel survey of school dropout youth conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, and used 318 out-of-school youth for analysis. As a result of analysis using the statistical programs SPSS 23.0 and Amos 23.0 version, the mediating effect of self-esteem was confirmed in the path between emotional support, a subfactor of parental attachment, and all subfactors of career barriers. These results suggest that multifaceted efforts are needed to improve parental attachment (emotional support, economic support) and self-esteem, which influence the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. Accordingly, based on the results of this study, practical measures were specifically presented to educate parents of out-of-school youth and improve their self-esteem.
