STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. The poor chemical bonding of a denture base resin to cast titanium framework often introduces adhesive failure and increases microleakage. PURPOSE. This study evaluated the shear bond strengths of a heat cure denture base resin to commercially pure titanium, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and a cobalt-chromium alloy using two adhesive primers. MATERIAL AND MATHODS. Disks of commercially pure titanium, Ti-6Al-4V alloy and a cobalt-chromium alloy were cast. Specimens without the primer were also prepared and used as the controls. The shear bond strengths were measured on a screw-driven universal testing machine. RESULTS. The primers significantly(P < .05) improved the shear bond strengths of the heat cure resin to all metals. However, the specimens primed with the Alloy $primer^{(R)}$(MDP monomer) showed higher bond strength than those primed with the MR $bond^{(R)}$(MAC-10 monomer) on titanium. Only adhesive failure was observed at the metal-resin interface in the non-primed specimens, while the primed specimens showed mixed failure of adhesive and cohesive failure. CONCLUSIONS. The use of appropriate adhesive metal primers makes it possible not only to eliminate the need for surface preparation of the metal framework before applying the heat cure resins, but also reduce the need for retentive devices on the metal substructure. In particular, the Alloy $primer^{(R)}$, which contains the phosphoric acid monomer, MDP, might be clinically more acceptable for bonding a heat cure resin to titanium than a MR $bond^{(R)}$, which contains the carboxylic acid monomer, MAC-10.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of a one-piece bracket jig system fabricated using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) by employing three-dimensional (3D) digital superimposition. Methods: This in vitro study included 226 anterior teeth selected from 20 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Bracket position errors from each of the 40 arches were analyzed quantitatively via 3D digital superimposition (best-fit algorithm) of the virtual bracket and actual bracket after indirect bonding, after accounting for possible variables that may affect accuracy, such as crowding and presence of the resin base. Results: The device could transfer the bracket accurately to the desired position of the patient's dentition within a clinically acceptable range of ± 0.05 mm and 2.0° for linear and angular measurements, respectively. The average linear measurements ranged from 0.029 to 0.101 mm. Among the angular measurements, rotation values showed the least deviation and ranged from 0.396° to 0.623°. Directional bias was pronounced in the vertical direction, and many brackets were bonded toward the occlusal surface. However, no statistical difference was found for the three angular measurement values (torque, angulation, and rotation) in any of the groups classified according to crowding. When the teeth were moderately crowded, the mesio-distal, bucco-lingual, and rotation measurement values were affected by the presence of the resin base. Conclusions: The characteristics of the CAD/CAM one-piece jig system were demonstrated according to the influencing factors, and the transfer accuracy was verified to be within a clinically acceptable level for the indirect bracket bonding of anterior teeth.
This study investigated the hypothesis that the dentin bond strength of self-etching adhesive (SEA) might be improved by applying additional layer of bonding resin that might alleviate the pH difference between the SEA and the restorative composite resin. Two SEAs were used in this study; Experimental SEA (Exp, pH: 1.96) and Adper Prompt (AP, 3M ESPE, USA, pH: 1.0) In the control groups they were applied with two sequential coats In the experimental groups, after applying the forst coat of assigned SEAs, the D/E bonding resin of All-Bond 2 (Bisco Inc., USA, pH: 6.9) was applied as the intermediate adhesive. Z-250 (3M ESPE, USA) composite resin was built-up in order to prepare hourglass-shaped specimens . The microtensile bond strength (MTBS) was measured and the effect of the Intermediate layer on the bond strength was analyzed for each SEA using t-test. The fracture mode of each specimen was inspected using stereomicroscope and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). When D/E bonding resin was applied as the second coat, MTBS was significantly higher than that of the control groups . The incidence of the failure between the adhesive and the composite or between the adhesive and dentin decreased and that of the failure within the adhesive layer increased. According to the results , applying the bonding resin of neutral pH can increase the bond strength of SEAs by alleviating the difference in acidity between the SEA and restorative composite resin.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of salivary contamination on shear bond strength of pit and fissure sealant using several bonding agents by means of applying saliva at different stages of treatment. 56 teeth were randomly divided into one of seven groups (8 per group): (Group A, B) acid etching; (Group C, D, E) Adper$^{TM}$ Single Bond after acid-etching; (Group F, G) Adper$^{TM}$ Prompt L-pop. Saliva was applied to teeth surface of B, D, E, and G groups for 10 seconds. Especially, group D was contaminated after acid-etching and group E was contaminated with saliva after adhesive application. After light curing, all of the specimens were thermocycled and the shear bond strength tests were performed. The results were as follows. 1. In generally performed pit and fissure sealant group, shear bonding strength significantly differently reduced when was contaminated by saliva (p<0.05). However the group that was applied with bonding agent during pit and fissure sealant procedure, there were no significant differences in the kind of bonding agents nor the stage of contamination. 2. In group that was not contaminated by saliva during pit and fissure sealant treatment, Adper$^{TM}$ Single Bond yielded the highest bonding strength but there were no significant differences. 3. The failure pattern on the debonded surfaces shows that most specimens from groups using bonding agents showed cohesive failures while most specimens from groups that didn't use bonding agents showed adhesive failures.

Microflute has several advantages of production cost and strength compared to board. Production technology of microflute has not been fully explored. Therefore suitability of corrugating medium for microflute shape formation was analyzed by measuring (1) lengths of corrugating medium before flute formation, (2) those after flute formation but before conditioning and (3) those after flute formation and after conditioning. The suitability of corrugating medium was better when the length change before and after conditioning after flute formation was smaller, because flute sustained its form. The suitability of corrugating medium for microflute shape formation was better when the flute height after flute formation was higher. The suitability of corrugating medium was analyzed depending on properties of corrugating medium in terms of fiber bonding strength and paper stiffness. For better microflute shape formation and its preservation it was found that fiber bonding should be increased, proper stiffness was required, and resistance to water absorption from surroundings should be increased.

In order to improve filler-fiber bonding in paper, starch-filler composites were prepared by a starch-fatty acid complex formation method. These composites were used as a papermaking filler to improve the physical properties of the paper, filler retention and the sizing effect. The solubility of the starch-fatty acid complex in water at different temperatures was measured. The results indicated that the starch-fatty acid complexes have very low solubility in water below $70^{\circ}C$, which can be easily coated on clay surface to modify clay-fiber bonding ability. The clay-starch composite filled handsheets showed that paper strength could increase more than $100{\sim}200%$ compared to untreated clay. It was found that ZDT of the handsheet decreased as the clay content increased when unmodified clay was used, but it increased when the starch-fatty acid composite modified filler was used. It was also found that the presence of fatty acide in the complex increased the water-repellant property of the handsheet, which can be used to aid in sizing during papermaking. Filler distribution and bonding characteristics between the composite and fiber were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).
The purpose of this study was to measure and compare tensile and shear strength for 4 types of new direct-bonding brackets and same brackets after recycling and to evaluate the change of bracket slot width after recycling. Four types of new direct-bond brackets were bonded to recently extracted human premolar teeth and the tensile and shear strength was measured by Universal Testing Machine. The brackets were recycled by chemical process and the tensile and shear test was repeated. To evaluate the change of the bracket slot width, slot width was measured by the Topcon Universal Measuring Microscope before and after recycling. Following results were obtained: 1. There was no satistically significant difference between the tensile and shear strength of recycled brackets and those of new brackets. 2. In both new and recycled brackets, the tensile and shear strength of perforated base bracket was lower than those of photoetched, foilmesh and contou-lok mesh base brackets. (P<0.01) 3. There was no statistically significant difference in bonding strengths of control group bonded only once and two times. 4. There was no statistically significant difference in the change of the bracket slow width after recycling process. 5. Of the failure, the combination type (58%) in the tensile strength and the tooth adhesive interface (65%) in the shear strength was the most common type.
In this study, $Hydroxyapatite+TiO_2(HAp+TiO_2)$ composite sol coatings on Cp-Ti substrates were deposited by using a sol-gel derived precursor. Prior to hydroxyapatite coating, the samples were micropolished and divided into three sets. The first set was coated with hydroxyapatite (HAp) directly on Cp-Ti. The second set was first coated with intermediate titania layer and then coated with HAp. The third set samples were coated with $HAp+TiO_2$ (50:50) composite sol. Each samples were predried at $200^{\circ}C$, and heat treated at $600^{\circ}C$. The formation of hydroxyapatite has been confirmed by XRD analyses and the substrate material was found to be oxidized with negligible amount of CaO in the coating. The NaOH treated samples showed the presence of rutile crystal. The SEM studies revealed surface morphologies of each samples. $HAp+TiO_2$ composite sol coating layer was found to be smooth. The bonding strength of each samples were calculated using pull out tests. The bonding strength of the $HAp+TiO_2$ composite sol coating on substrate was 29.35MPa.

Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) has become one of the key processes in wafer level stacking technology for 3D stacked IC. In this study, two-step CMP process was proposed to polish $Cu/SiO_2$ hybrid bonding surface, that is, Cu CMP was followed by $SiO_2$ CMP to minimize Cu dishing. As a result, Cu dishing was reduced down to $100{\sim}200{\AA}$ after $SiO_2$ CMP and surface roughness was also improved. The bonding interface showed no noticeable dishing or interface line, implying high bonding strength.
