In this study, the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells with different thickness of the photelectrode film was simulated by using the electron-diffusion differential model. Through this simulation, the relationships between the thickness of the photoelectrode film and the performances (open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and overall photoelectric-conversion efficiency) of cells were understood and the performances with different thickness of the photoelectrede film were also examined. For considering the refractive index in the liquid electrolyte and exploring the scattering effect of titanium dioxide particles with different sizes using the Mie light-scattering theory, the highest scattering effect of each particles was found out and the optimal size of the titanium dioxide particle was determined for light scattering in the photoelectrode film of dye-sensitized solar cell. Through experiment, the mixed titanium dioxide cell was better than the single titanium dioxide cell and generated a higher overall conversion efficiency because the optimal titanium dioxide particles in the phoelectrode film as light scattering.
Tungsten (W) is recently gaining attention as a potential candidate to replace Cu in semiconductor metallization due to its expected improvement in material reliability and reduced resistivity size effect. In this study, the impact of electron scattering at grain boundaries in a polycrystalline W thin film was investigated. Two nominally 300 nm-thick films, a (110)-oriented single crystal film and a (110)-textured polycrystalline W film, were prepared onto (11-20) Al2O3 substrate and thermally oxidized Si substrate, respectively in identical fabrication conditions. The lateral grain size for the polycrystalline film was determined to be $119{\pm}7nm$ by TEM-based orientation mapping technique. The film thickness was chosen to significantly exceed the electron mean free path in W (16.1 and 77.7 nm at 293 and 4.2 K, respectively), which allows the impact of surface scattering on film resistivity to be negligible. Then, the difference in the resistivity of the two films can be attributed to grain boundary scattering. quantitative analyses were performed by employing the Mayadas-Shatzkes (MS) model, where the grain boundary reflection coefficient was determined to be $0.42{\pm}0.02$ and $0.40{\pm}0.02$ at 293 K and 4.2 K, respectively.
As an alternative energy, Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have received much attention due to low cost manufacturing procedure and high energy consumption rate. Incorporating scattering centers in the nanocrystalline photoanode or additional scattering layers on the nanocrystalline photoanode is an effective way to enhance the light harvest efficiency of the photoanode and the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The light scattering abilities of these scattering layers also depend on the relative sizes and phase of the particles in the layers. A higher surface area is normally obtained using large particle sizes. Therefore, transparent high surface area $TiO_2$ layers and an additional scattering layer consisting of $TiO_2$-Rutile 500 nm paste with relatively larger particles are attractive. In this work, we investigates the applicability of a hybrid $TiO_2$ electrode (or a working electrode with a light scattering layer) in a DSSCs. We fabrication various thin film using $TiO_2$ paste 20 nm and $TiO_2$ paste 500 nm. As a result, the efficiency of the a single structure thin film was 3.35% and the efficiency as scattering layer of hybrid structure thin film was 4.36%, 4.73%.

Most thickness measurement techniques using X-ray radiation are unsuitable in field processes involving fast-moving organic films. Herein, we propose a Compton scattering X-ray radiation method, which probes the light elements in organic materials, and a new simple, non-destructive, and non-contact calibration-free real-time film thickness measurement technique by setting up a bench-top X-ray thickness measurement system simulating a field process dealing with thin flexible organic films. The use of X-ray fluorescence and Compton scattering X-ray radiation reflectance signals from films in close contact with a roller produced accurate thickness measurements. In a high-thickness range, the contribution of X-ray fluorescence is negligible, whereas that of Compton scattering is negligible in a low-thickness range. X-ray fluorescence and Compton scattering show good correlations with the organic film thickness (R2 = 0.997 and 0.999 for X-ray fluorescence and Compton scattering, respectively, in the thickness range 0-0.5 mm). Although the sensitivity of X-ray fluorescence is approximately 4.6 times higher than that of Compton scattering, Compton scattering signals are useful for thick films (e.g., thicker than ca. 1-5 mm under our present experiment conditions). Thus, successful calibration-free thickness monitoring is possible for fast-moving films, as demonstrated in our experiments.
Enhancement of light trapping in solar cells is becoming increasingly urgent for the development of next generation thin film solar cells. One of the possible candidates for increasing light trapping in thin film solar cells that has emerged recently is the use of scattering from metallic nanostructures. In this study, we have investigated the effects of the geometric parameters of Ag nanorings on the light scattering efficiency by using three dimensional Finite Different Time Domain (FDTD) calculations. We have found that the forward scattering of incident radiation from Ag nanorings strongly depends on the geometric parameters of the nanostructures such as diameter, height, etc. The forward scattering to substrate direction is increased as the outer diameter and height of the nanorings decrease. In particular, for nanorings larger than 200 nm, the inner diameter of Ag nanorings should be optimized to enhance the forward scattering efficiency. Light absorption and scattering efficiency calculations for the various nanoring arrays revealed that the periodicity of nanorings arrays also plays an important role in the absorption and the scattering efficiency enhancement. Light scattering efficiency calculations for nanoring arrays also revealed that enhancement of scattering efficiency could be utilized to enhance the light absorption through the forward scattering mechanism.
Recently, nanostructure and the molecular orientation of organic thin films have been largely paid attention due to its importance in organic electronics such as organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), and organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Among various methods, the diffraction and scattering techniques based on synchrotron x-rays have shown powerful results in organic thin film systems. In this work, we introduce the in-situ annealing system installed at PLS-II (Pohang Light Source II) for organic thin films by simultaneously conducting various x-ray scattering measurements of x-ray reflectivity, conventional x-ray scattering, grazing incidence wide angle x-ray scattering (GI-WAXS) and so on. Using the in-situ measurement, we could obtain real time variation of nanostructure as well as molecular orientation during thermal annealing in metal-phthalocyanine thin films. The variation of surface and interface also could be simultaneously investigated by the x-ray reflectivity measurement.
Light scattering enhancement is widely used to enhance the optical absorption efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells. In this work, we systematically analyzed the effects of spherical voids distributed as light-scattering centers in photoanode films made of an assembly of zinc oxide nanoparticles. Spherical voids in electrode films were formed using a sacrificial template of polystyrene (PS) spheres. The diameter and volume concentration of these spheres was varied to optimize the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells. The effects of film thickness on this efficiency was also examined. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed to study electron transport in the electrodes. The highest power conversion efficiency of 4.07 % was observed with $12{\mu}m$ film thickness. This relatively low optimum thickness of the electrode film is due to the enhanced light absorption caused by the light scattering centers of voids distributed in the film.
We fabricated high transmission and high scattering poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)(EVA) films embedding $SiO_2$ nanoparticles to improve outcoupling efficiency in organic display. The 800nm diameter $SiO_2$ nanoparticles aggregated and formed $1.56{\mu}m$ (with ${\pm}0.853{\mu}m$ standard deviation) diameter microparticles in EVA. The total transmission of scattering film was 83.3% on Polyethylene terephthalate(PET), which was higher than reference 82.8% PET substrate. The diffuse transmission and haze of the $SiO_2$ embedded EVA film were 76.1% and 91.4%, respectively. The optimized condition was 1:1 weight ratio of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles to EVA in Tetrahydrofuran(THF) solution. When the ratio of $SiO_2$ was larger than 1, the total transmission decreased by the increase in backscattering of light due to high scattering. With the optimized condition, we could succeed to fabricate a large scale film(35m in length) with a roll-to-roll process.
