The analysis employed a sample of 764 elderly individuals residing in rural area. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, a chi-square test, a t-test, and a multiple regression analysis. First, the respondents reported moderate life satisfaction. Those respondents living alone were less likely to report life satisfaction than those with a spouse. Second, the respondents were more likely to be in contact with their neighbors than their adult children. Third, the respondents were more likely to receive social support from adult children than provide it to them. By contrast, the respondents were more likely to provide social support to neighbors than receive it from them. Fourth, economic status and contact with adult children and neighbors had signigicant effects on the life satisfaction of the respondents. Gender, religion, economic status, health status, increased contact with adult children, and instrumental support to neighbors had positive effects on the life satisfaction of elderly two-person household.

  • This study attempted to explore the characteristics of conflicts in marriage life, and to analyze their impacts on global marital satisfaction perceived by wives in rural areas. The survey data was gathered from 151 rural wives. The degrees of three types of conflicts were shown to be low. while in terms of the degree of seriousness, environmental, interpersonal and intrapersonal are in descending order. Especially the degree of the environmental types of conflicts were significantly different across the family life cycle. In order to analyze the relationships between the types of conflicts and the marital satisfaction, logistic regression were performed. It was found that the environmental type of conflict was negatively associated with the likelihood of satisfaction in the marriage life. On the other hand, one of the control variables, the degree of satisfaction on the husband's job, i.e., farming, was positively associated with it.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of city dwellers' migration to the rural areas on the increase of their life satisfaction and its influencing variables. Using a quota sampling, 500 city dwellers across the country and 180 migrators to the Goesan Gun in the Chungcheongbuk-do were selected. The results showed that (a) most city dwellers want to move to the rural areas for their relaxation and rest for their retirement, but migrants' main goal is to realize their internally oriented values, (b) life satisfaction is more evident for migrants compared to city dwellers, and it is influenced by self-assessed income, self-perceived health and internally oriented value, and (c) migrators contribute to their own successful aging by using strategies of selection, optimization and compensation compared to city dwellers. The contribution of this paper is to identify and confirm that (a) migration to the rural areas is an effective way to increase individual's life satisfaction although goals of dwellers and migrators are different, (b) the specific influencing variable and their weights in increase of life satisfaction are unique in Korea, and (c) income level is a not sufficient condition but necessary condition. Several managerial implications and policy directions were suggested to help both migrators and potential migrators to settle successfully in the rural areas.
