  • Let ξ$_{p}$(z$_{0}$) be the pth quantile of the distribution of the survival time of an individual with time-invariant covariate vector z$_{0}$ in the additive risk model. We propose an estimator of (ξ$_{p}$(z$_{0}$) and derive its asymptotic distribution, and then construct an approximate confidence interval of ξ$_{p}$(z$_{0}$) . Simulation studies are carried out to investigate performance of the proposed estimator far practical sample sizes in terms of empirical coverage probabilities. Also, the estimator is illustrated on small cell lung cancer data taken from Ying, Jung, and Wei (1995) .d Wei (1995) .

  • Decalcomania is a new method for SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) unit cell fabrication. A tight and dense $5{\mu}m$ Yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) electrolyte layer on anode substrate was fabricated by the decalcomania method. After 8YSZ as the electrolyte starting material was calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$, the particle size was controlled by the attrition mill. The median particle size (D50) of each 8YSZ was $39.6{\mu}m$, $9.30{\mu}m$, $6.35{\mu}m$, and $3.16{\mu}m$, respectively. The anode substrate was coated with decalcomania papers which were made by using 8YSZ with different median particle sizes. In order to investigate the effect of median particle sizes and sintering conditions on the electrolyte density, each sample was sintered for 2, 5 and 10 h, respectively. 8YSZ with a median particle size of $3.16{\mu}m$ which was sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 10 had the highest density. With this 8YSZ, a SOFCs unit cell was manufactured with a $5{\mu}m$ layer by the decalcomania method. Then the unit cell was run at $800^{\circ}C$. The Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) and Maximum power density (MPD) was 1.12 V and $650mW/cm^2$, respectively.

  • We consider the problem of identifying multiple outliers in linear model. The available regression diagnostic methods often do not succeed in detecting multiple outliers because of the masking and swamping effect. Recently, among the various robust estimator of reducing the effect of outliers, LMS(Least Meadian Square) estimator has been to be a suitable method proposed to expose outliers and leverage points. However, as you know it, the data analysis method with LMS estimator is to be taken the median of the squared residuals in the sample which is extracted the sample space. Then this model causes the trouble, for the number of the chosen sample is nCp, i.e. as the size of sample space n is increasing, the number is increasing fastly. And the covariance matrix may be the singular matrix, so that matrix is approching collinearity. Thus we propose a procedure ELMS for the resampling in LMS method and study the size of the effective elementary set in this algorithm.

  • As an alternative to the k-means clustering the k-spatial medians clustering has many good points because of advantages of spatial median. However, it has not been used a lot since it needs heavy computation. If the number of objects and the number of variables are large the computation time problem is getting serious. In this study we propose fast algorithm for the k-spatial medians clustering. Practical applicability of the algorithm is shown with some numerical studies.

  • As one of indirect ways to get an optimal answer for sensitive questions both lower and upper values are sometimes asked and collected. In this paper a statistical method is proposed to analyze this kind of data using graphics. This method could define each sample median and estimate an optimal value between lower and upper bounds. In particular we find that this method has similar explanations of an equilibrium price with demand and supply functions in Economics.

  • A method which determines the number of replications in the simulation is proposed, particularly for small-sample comparison of estimators. This method takes the smallest number of replications that makes the difference of mean square errors be statistically significant and provides an efficient algorithm for calculating the standard error of the mean square error. Two examples are illustrated, the first one is on comparison of mean and median ; the second, the Kaplan-Meier type and Buckley-James type estimators of a quantile function with censored data.

  • We use statistical tests which are useful for two-sample problem for detecting edges in gray-level images. An edge is detected by examining changes in gray-level value between adjacent pixel neighborhoods. Some experimental results show that nonparametric detectors such as Mann-Whitney test median test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test perform effectively in both noisy and noise-free images while parametric T test is sensitive to noise.

  • A class of sequential binomial tests and a sequential rank test can be applied for testing two treatments when subjects are paired in many-to-one ratio. The efficiency of each test is examined in terms of the average sample number. The binomial tests are much easier and more convenient to apply than the rank test not as efficient. Within the class of binomial test, the median test appears to be the most efficient is general.

  • This study deals with the refinement of Hwasun flint clay by grinding, classifying, magnetic separation and acid treatment in sequence. Results are as follows ; 1. Fine kaolinite particles of median size in the range of 4.8 and 1.7$\mu\textrm{m}$ was collected, with the yield of 87.4% by dry grinding and classifying process. 2. It is proven that the iron bearing are of Hwasun flint clay is mainly consisted of chloritoid and iron rich muscovite. 3. As the results of the high gradient magnetic separation, the bleaching and iron removal degree of the dry grinding and classifying sample was 4-58% and 5-62% respectively. 4. As the results of the acid treatment, bleaching and weight loss degree of the dry grinding and classifying sample was reduced to 16-82% and 6-29% respectively.

  • Statistical control charts are useful tools to monitor and control the manufacturing processes and are widely used in most Korean industries. Many Korean companies, however, do not always obtain desired results from the traditional control charts by Shewhart such as the X-chart, X-chart, X-chart, etc. This is partly because the quality charterstics of the process are not distributed normally but are skewed due to the intermittent production, small lot size, etc. In Shewhart X-chart, which is the most widely used one in Korea, such skewed distributions make the plots to be inclined below or above the central line or outside the control limits although no assignable causes can be found. To overcome such shortcomings in nonnormally distributed processes, a distribution-free type of confidence interval can be used, which should be based on order statistics. This thesis is concerned with the design of control chart based on a sample median which is easy to use in practical situation and therefore properties for nonnormal distributions may be easily analyzed. Control limits and central lines are given for tile more famous nonnormal distributions, such as Gamma, Beta, Lognormal, Weibull, Pareto, Truncated-normal distributions. Robustness of the proposed median control chart is compared with that of the X-chart, the former tends to be superior to the latter as the probability distribution of the process becomes more skewed. The average run length to detect the assignable cause is also compared when the process has a Normal or a Gamma distribution for which the properties of X are easy to verify, the proposed chart is slightly worse than the X-chart for the normally distributed product but much better for Gamma-distributed products. Average Run Lengths of the other distributions are also computed. To use the proposed control chart, the probability distribution of the process should be known or estimated. If it is not possible, the results of comparison of the robustness force us to use the proposed median control chart based on a normal distribution. To estimate the distribution of the process, Sturge's formula is used to graph the histogram and the method of probability plotting, $X^2$-goodness of fit test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, are discussed with real case examples. A comparison of the propose4 median chart and the X chart was also performed with these examples and the median chart turned out to be superior to the X-chart.
