냉각날개를 갖는 외전형 BLDC 모터의 열유동 해석 (Thermal and Flow Analysis of Outer-Rotor Type BLDC Motor with Cooling Blades)

  • In this paper, thermo-flow characteristics of an outer-rotor type BLDC motor are numerically analyzed using three-dimensional turbulence modeling. On the rotor of the BLDC motor, cooling blades and cooling holes are existed for the enhanced cooling performances. Rotating the blades and holes generates axial air flow streaming into inner rotor side and passing through stator slots, which cools down stator by forced convection. Operating tests are performed and the numerical temperature fields are found to be in good agreement with experimental results. A new design of the BLDC motor has also been developed and major design parameters such as the arrangement of cooling holes, the area of cooling holes and cooling blades, and the cooling blade angle, are analyzed for the enhanced convective heat transfer rate. It is found that the convective heat transfer rate of the new BLDC motor model is increased by about 8.1%, compared to that of the reference model.

  • This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of a tilted HDD spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings (FDBs). Tilting motion of a HDD spindle system may be caused by improper manufacturing tolerance, such as imperfect cylindricity between shaft and sleeve of FDBs, imperfect perpendicularity between shaft and thrust as well as the gyroscopic moment of the unbalanced mass of the rotating part. Tilting motion may result in the instability of the HDD spindle system and it may increase the disk run-out to limit memory capacity. This research proposes a modified Reynolds equation for the coupled journal and thrust FDBs to include the variable film thickness due to the cylindricity and the perpendicularity. Finite element method is used to solve the Reynolds equation for the pressure distribution. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress, respectively. The dynamic behavior is determined by solving the equations of a motion of a HDD spindle system in six degrees of freedom with the Runge-Kutta method to study whirling and tilting motions. This research shows that the cylindricity and the perpendicularity increase the tilting angle and whirl radius of the rotor.

소성역 체결 볼트의 기계적 거동 유한요소해석 (Finite Element Analysis of Mechanical Behavior of Bolt Tightened in Plastic Region)

  • Plastic region tightening is widely used in critical bolted joints in internal combustion engines in order to reduce the engine weight by maximizing the use of load-carrying capacity of bolt. Mechanical behavior of bolt tightened in plastic region under external axial tensile load is investigated for various friction conditions using three dimensional finite element analysis. The behavior of bolt tightened in elastic region as well as that in tensile test are investigated for comparison. Tightening process is simulated by rotating the bolt in order to examine the friction effect realistically. It is revealed that the bolt tightened in plastic region can carry more external load until the joint is opened, and yields at lower bolt load than the bolt tightened in elastic region. The friction coefficient has effect on the yield load, but not on the load-carrying capacity. Moreover, the scatter in the bolt preload due to friction begins with plastic deformation of bolt in the angle tightening control, whereas it begins with the onset of tightening in the torque tightening control. The observations are interpreted with the residual torsional stress in the bolt generated during the tightening.

Modeling and experimental comparative analysis on the performance of small-scale wind turbines

  • This paper deals with the design, wind tunnel testing, and performance analysis of small wind turbines targeting low-power applications. Three different small-size blade designs in terms of size, shape, and twisting angle are considered and tested. We conduct wind tunnel tests while measuring the angular speed of the rotating blades, the generated voltage, and the current under varying resistive loading and air flow conditions. An electromechanical model is also used to predict the measured voltage and power and verify their consistency and repeatability. The measurements are found in qualitative agreement with those reported in previously-published experimental works. We present a novel methodology to estimate the mechanical torque applied to the wind turbine without the deployment of a torque measuring device. This method can be used to determine the power coefficient at a given air speed, which constitutes an important performance indicator of wind turbines. The wind tunnel tests revealed the capability of the developed wind turbines to deliver more than 1225 mW when subject to an air flow with a speed of 7 m/s. The power coefficient is found ranging between 26% and 32%. This demonstrates the aerodynamic capability of the designed blades to extract power from the wind.

Structural Characteristics of 3- and 4-Coordinate Borons from 11B MAS NMR and Single-Crystal NMR in the Nonlinear Optical Material BiB3O6

  • The structural characteristics of 4-coordinate $BO_4$ [B(1)] and 3-coordinate $BO_3$ [B(2)] groups in $BiB_3O_6$ were studied by $^{11}B$ magic angle spinning (MAS) and single-crystal nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The spin-lattice relaxation time in the laboratory frame, $T_1$, for $^{11}B$ decreased slowly with increasing temperature, whereas the spin-lattice relaxation times in the rotating frame, $T_{1{\rho}}$, for B(1) and B(2), which differed from $T_1$, were nearly constant. Further, $T_{1{\rho}}$ for B(1) and B(2) showed very similar trends, although the $T_{1{\rho}}$ value of B(2) was shorter than that of B(1). The 3-coordinate $BO_3$ and 4-coordinate $BO_4$ were distinguished by $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectrum and $T_{1{\rho}}$.

클린 디젤엔진용 워터펌프 유동해석 (Flow Analysis of Water Pump for Clean Disel Engine Application)

  • Pressure distribution around rotating impeller blades in centrifugal pump has been main issue for design of efficient and high performance automotive water pump. In addition, pressure losses of inlet water pipes should be considered to reduce additional pressure drop and design high performance engine cooling system. In this paper, pressure distribution inside water pump and pressure drop between inlet and outlet of water pump are investigated numerically to design plastic water pump for clean diesel engine application. And the inlet geometry of water pump was considered to analysis the effect of inlet water pipe geometry on pressure distribution around impeller blades and outlet pressure. The prediction results are compared with experimental data to validate and determine optimal operation condition without water pump cavitation. Major design parameters such as blade angle, volute geometry, system pressure, and coolant flow rate are considered to confirm applying possibility of plastic blades to the clean diesel engine.

Layout optimization for multi-platform offshore wind farm composed of spar-type floating wind turbines

  • A multi-platform offshore wind farm is receiving the worldwide attention for the sake of maximizing the wind power capacity and the dynamic stability at sea. But, its wind power efficiency is inherently affected by the interference of wake disturbed by the rotating blades, so its layout should be appropriately designed to minimize such wake interference. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to introduce a layout optimization for multi-platform offshore wind farm consisted of 2.5MW spar-type floating wind turbines. The layout is characterized by the arrangement type of wind turbines, the spacing between wind turbines and the orientation of wind farm to the wind direction, but the current study is concerned with the spacing for a square-type wind farm oriented with the specific angle. The design variable and the objective function are defined by the platform length and the total material volume of the wind farm. The maximum torque loss and overlapping section area are taken as the constraints, and their meta-models expressed in terms of the design variable are approximated using the existing experimental data and the geometry interpretation of wake flow.

  • 레이저 홀로그래피 방법과 반응성 이온식각 방법(RIE: reactive ion etching)을 사용하여 2차원 광자결정을 제작하였다. 육변형(hexagonal) 및 사변형(square) 광자결정 격자는 첫 번째 레이저 노광 후 시편을 각각 60도 및 90도 회전하고 다시 두 번째 노광을 통하여 제작할 수 있었다. 또한 사변형 광자결정 격자의 나노컬럼(nanocolumn)의 크기와 주기는 레이저 입사각에 따라 각각 125∼145 nm, 220∼290 nm로 미세한 조정이 가능하였다. 마지막으로 CH$_4$/H$_2$ 가스를 이용한 반응성 이온식각 방법을 통하여 aspect ratio가 1.5 이상인 InP/InGaAsP nanocolumn을 제작 할 수 있었다.

  • 회전검광자방식 편광분석방법을 이용하여 LCD (liquid crystal display) 편광판에 부착되어 있는 보상판의 느린축이 편광판의 투과축 대비 틀어진 각도를 0.1도 이내로 정밀하게 측정할 수 있는 방법을 제안하였다. 본 방법을 이용하면 보상판을 LCD 편광판과 접합하는 공정에서 발생하는 광축정렬의 오차를 줄일 수 있고 궁극적으로 LCD의 화질을 일정하게 유지, 관리하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • Active vibration control methods are required in the high speed rotor systems supported by magnetic bearings. A prediction control technique is one of the control methods. Gain and phase angle are primarily chosen with analyzing the responses for a certain rotor speed. The feasibility of this technique has been reported for only analytical simulations. Therefore this paper constructs the test rig supported by ball bearings with a magnetic bearing type actuator and develops a prediction control system by using LabVIEW and Compact RIO. Finally as rotating speeds are modulated, the gains and phase angles for the speeds are determined with vibration control of the test rig. This leads that the prediction control technique may be applied to the rotor system with the magnetic bearing.
