  • In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO) using the output matching network based on the harmonic control circuit is presented for improving the phase noise property. The phase noise suppression is achieved through the harmonic control circuit having the short impedances for both second-harmonic and third-harmonic components, which has been connected at the output matching network. Also, we have used the microstrip square open loop multiple split-ring resonator(OLMSRR) having the high-Q property to further reduce the phase noise of VCO. Because the output matching network based on the harmonic control circuit has been used for reducing the phase noise property instead of the High-Q resonator, we can obtain the broad tuning range by the low-Q resonator. The phase noise of the proposed VCO using the output matching network based on the harmonic control circuit and the microstrip square OLMSRR has been $-127.5{\sim}126.33$ dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the tuning range, $5.744{\sim}5.839$ GHz. Compared with the reference VCO using the output matching network without the harmonic control circuit and the microstrip line resonator, the phase noise property of the proposed VCO has been improved in 26.66 dB.

  • This paper presents a clock and data recovery(CDR) using a quarter-rate technique. The proposed CDR helps reduce the VCO frequency and is thus advantageous for high speed application. It can achieve a low jitter operation and extend the pull-in range without a reference clock. The CDR consists of a quarter-rate bang-bang type phase detector(PD) quarter-rate frequency detector(QRFD), two charge pumps circuits(CPs), low pass filter(LPF) and a ring voltage controlled oscillator(VCO). The Proposed CDR has been fabricated in a standard $0.18{\mu}m$ 1P6M CMOS technology. It occupies an active area $1{\times}1mm^2$ and consumes 98 mW from a single 1.8 V supply.

  • This paper describes a frequency synthesizer designed in a $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS technology for using local oscillators for the IF stages. The design is focused mainly on low-power characteristics. A simple ring-oscillator based VCO is used, where a single control signal can be used for variable resistors. The designed PLL includes all building blocks for elimination of external components, other than the crystal, and its operating frequency can be programmed by external data. It operates in the frequency range of 250MHz to 800MHz and consumes l.08mA at 500MHz from a 2.5V supply. The measured phase noise is -85dBc/Hz in-band and -105dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset. The die area is $1.09mm^2$

  • In this paper, a novel split ring resonator is proposed for improvement of phase noise characteristics that is weak point of oscillator using planar type microstrip line resonator, and oscillator for 5.8GHz band is designed using proposed split ring resonator. At the fundamental frequency of 5.8GHz, 7.22dBm output power and -83.5 dBc@100kHz phase noise have been measured for oscillator with split ring resonator. The phase noise characteristics of oscillator is improved about 9.7dB compared to one using the general ${\lambda}$/4 microstrip resonator. Because it is possible that varactor diode or lumped capacitor is placed on the gaps of split ring resonator, resonant frequency can be controlled by bias voltage. We can design voltage controlled oscillator using proposed split ring resonator. Thus, due to its simple fabrication process and planar type, it is expected that the technique in this paper can be widely used for low phase noise oscillators for both MIC and MMIC applications.

  • In this paper, a novel resonator using ring type DGS is proposed for improvement of phase noise characteristics that is weak point of oscillator using planar type microstrip line resonator, and oscillator for 5.8GHz band is designed using proposed DGS resonator. The ring type DGS resonator is composed of DGS cell etched on ground plane under $50{\Omega}$ microstrip line. At the fundamental frequency of 5.8GHz, 7.6dBm output power and -82.7 dBc@100kHz phase noise have been measured for oscillator with ring type DGS resonator. The phase noise characteristics of oscillator is improved about 9.5dB compared to one using the general ${\lambda}/4$ microstrip resonator. • A fast-hopping frequency synthesizer that reduces complexity and power consumption is presented for MB-OFDM UWB applications. The proposed architecture uses 3960 MHz LC VCO, 528 MHz ring oscillator, passive mixer and LC-tuned Q-enhancement BPF to generate Band Group 1 frequencies. The adjacent channel rejection ratio is less than -40 dBc for 3432 MHz and -H dBc for 4488 MHz. A fast switching SCL-tpre MUX is used to produce the required channel output signal and it takes less than 2.2 ns for band switching. The total power consumption is 47.9 mW from a 1.8 V supply.

  • For CMOS technology of 65 nm and beyond, the gate leakage current can not be negligible anymore. In this paper, the impact of the gate leakage current in ring voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) on phase-locked loop (PLL) is analyzed and modeled. A voltage -to-voltage (V-to-V) circuit is proposed to reduce the voltage ripple on $V_{ctrl}$ induced by the gate leakage current. The side effects induced by the V-to-V circuit are described and optimized either. The PLL design is based on a standard 65 nm CMOS technology with a 1.8 V power supply. Simulation results show that 97 % ripple voltage is smoothed at 216 MHz output frequency. The RMS and peak-to-peak jitter are 3 ps and 14.8 ps, respectively.

Realized RF frequency synthesizer used as the RF local oscillator for a QDC receiver exhibits a phase noise of -92 dBc/Hz at 885kHz offset from the 950.4 MHz carrier, which complies with IS-95-A CDMA specification. It has a rms jitter of 23.7 ps, and draws 30mA from a 5V supply. Measured I/Q phase error of the 950.4 output signals is 0.7 degree.

  • A CMOS frequency synthesizer for $5{\sim}6$ GHz UNII-band sub-harmonic direct-conversion receiver has been developed. For quadrature down-conversion with sub-harmonic mixing, octa-phase local oscillator (LO) signals are generated by an integer-N type phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer. The complex timing issue of feedback divider of the PLL with large division ratio is solved by using multimodulus prescaler. Phase noise of the local oscillator signal is improved by employing the ring-type LC-tank oscillator and switching its tail current source. Implemented in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, the phase noise of the LO signal is lower than -80 dBc/Hz and -113 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 1MHz offset, respect-tively. The measured reference spur is lower than -70 dBc and the power consumption is 40 m W from a 1.8 V supply voltage.
