Older or damaged structures can require significant retrofit to ensure they perform well in subsequent earthquakes. Supplemental damping devices are used to achieve this goal, but increase base shear forces, foundation demand, and cost. Displacement reduction without increasing base shear is possible using novel semi-active and recently-created passive devices, which offer energy dissipation in selected quadrants of the force-displacement response. Combining these devices with large, strictly passive energy dissipation devices can offer greater, yet customized response reductions. Supplemental damping to reduce response without increasing base shear enables a net-zero base shear approach. This study evaluates this concept using two incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) to show displacement reductions up to 40% without increasing base shear, more than would be achieved for either device alone, significantly reducing the risk of response exceeding the unaltered structural case. IDA results lead to direct calculation of reductions in risk and annualized economic cost for adding these devices using this net-zero concept, thus quantifying the trade-off. The overall device assessment and risk analysis method presented provides a generalizable proof-of-concept approach, and provides a framework for assessing the impact and economic cost-benefit of using modern supplemental energy dissipation devices.
In Smart mobile devices embedding big.LITTLE architectures, the conventional multi-core assignment scheme for user applications may incur wasteful energy consumption and long response time. In this paper, we propose a user experience assisted energy-efficient multicore assignment scheme. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves at 40% less energy consumption and at 20% less response time comparing to the legacy scheme.

The number of interconnected real-world devices such as sensors, actuators, and physical devices has increased with the advancement of technology. Due to this advancement, users face difficulties searching for the location of these devices, and the central issue is the findability of Things. In the WoT environment, keyword-based and geospatial searching approaches are used to locate these devices anywhere and on the web interface. A few static methods of indexing and ranking are discussed in the literature, but they are not suitable for finding devices dynamically. The authors have proposed a mechanism for dynamic and efficient searching of the devices in this paper. Indexing and ranking approaches can improve dynamic searching in different ways. The present paper has focused on indexing for improving dynamic searching and has indexed the Things Description in Solr. This paper presents the Things Description according to the model of W3C JSON-LD along with the open-access APIs. Search efficiency can be analyzed with query response timings, and the accuracy of response timings is critical for search results. Therefore, in this paper, the authors have evaluated their approach by analyzing the search query response timings and the accuracy of their search results. This study utilized different indexing approaches such as key-words-based, spatial, and hybrid. Results indicate that response time and accuracy are better with the hybrid approach than with keyword-based and spatial indexing approaches.
Various devices have been emerging as a means of measuring indoor air quality, and among them, there are devices that support real-time remote monitoring through IoT technology and a cloud environment. To improve indoor air quality, based on the results determined by measuring devices, air purifiers or ventilation systems may need to be operated, and temperature and humidity control may be required. In this paper, we propose a design of indoor air quality measuring devices required for indoor air quality evaluation, and of the system needed to control relevant devices to improve indoor air quality through the interaction with the measuring devices. Currently, the servers for the interaction of indoor air quality devices and IoT devices are divided into conventional server type and serverless type, comparing the differences in response time of IoT devices to changes of indoor air quality.

Friction energy dissipative devices have been increasingly implemented as structural seismic damage protecting systems due to their excellent seismic energy dissipating capacity and high stiffness. This study develops rotational friction energy dissipative devices and verifies experimentally their cyclic response. Based on the understanding of the differences between the traditional linear-motion friction behavior and the rotational friction behavior, the configuration of the frictional surface was determined by investigating the characteristics of the micro-friction behavior. The friction surface suggested in this paper consists of brake-lining pads and stainless steel sheets and is normally stressed by high-strength bolts. Based upon these frictional characteristics of the selected interface, the rotational friction energy dissipative devices were developed. Bolt torque-bearing force tests, rotational friction tests of the suggested friction interfaces were carried out to identify their frictional behavior. Test results show that the bearing force is almost linearly proportional to the applied bolt torque and presents stable cyclic response regardless of the experimental parameters selected this testing program. Finally, cyclic tests of the rotational friction energy dissipative devices were performed to find out their structural characteristics and to confirm their stable cyclic response. The developed friction energy dissipative devices present very stable cyclic response and meet the requirements for displacement-dependent energy dissipative devices prescribed in ASCE/SEI 7-10.

Smart Grid devices are the major components of the Smart Grid. They collect and process a variety informations relating power services and support intelligent power services by exchanging informations with other SG devices or systems. However, If a SG device is attacked, the device can provide attack route to attacker and attacker can attack other SG devices or systems using the route. It may cause problem in power services. So, when cyber incident is happened, we need to acquire and examine digital evidence of SG device quickly to secure availability of SG. In this paper, we designed remote evidence acquisition system to acquire digital evidences from SG devices to response quickly to incidents of SG devices. To achieve this, we analyzed operating environment of SG devices and thought remote digital evidence acquisition system of SG devices will be more effective than remote digital evidence acquisition system targeted general IT devices. So, we introduce design method for SG devices remote evidence acquisition system considered operating environment of SG devices.

In this paper, a novel fast response NDIR analyzer (FRNDIR), which uses an electrically pulsed semiconductor emitter and dual type PbSe detector for the PPM-level detection of carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) at a wavelength of 4.28 $\mu\textrm{m}$, is described. Modulation of conventional NDIR energy typically occurs at 1 to 20 Hz. To achieve real time high-speed measurement, the new analyzer employs a semiconductor light emitter that can be modulated by electrical chopping. Updated measurements are obtained every one millisecond. The detector has two independent lead selenide (PbSe) with IR band pass filters. Both the emitter accuracy and the detector sensitivity are increased by thermoelectric cooling of up to -20 degrees C in all semiconductor devices. Here we report the use of semiconductor devices to achieve improved performance such that these devices have potential application to CO$_2$ gas measurement and, in particular, the measurement of fast response CO$_2$ concentration at millisecond level.
A complete high-frequency small-signal circuit model of a 40 Gb/s butterfly electroabsorption modulator integrated laser module is presented for the first time to analyze and optimize its electro-optic (E/O) response and reflection characteristics. An agreement between measured and simulated results demonstrates the accuracy and validity of the procedures. By optimizing the bonding wire length and the impedance of the coplanar waveguide transmission lines, the E/O response increases approximately 5% to 15% from 20 GHz to 33 GHz, while the signal injection efficiency increases from approximately 15% to 25% over 18 GHz to 35 GHz.

IoT devices including smart devices are connected with internet, thus they have security threats everytime. Particularly, IoT devices are composed of low performance MCU and small-capacity memory because they are miniaturized, so they are likely to be exposed to various security threats like DoS attacks. In addition, in case of IoT devices installed for a remote place, it's not easy for users to control continuously them and to install immediately security patch for them. For most of IoT devices connected directly with internet under user's intention, devices exposed to outside by setting IoT gateway, and devices exposed to outside by the DMZ function or Port Forwarding function of router, specific protocol for IoT services was used and the devices show a response when services about related protocol are required from outside. From internet search engine for IoT devices, IP addresses are inspected on the basis of protocol mainly used for IoT devices and then IP addresses showing a response are maintained as database, so that users can utilize related information. Specially, IoT devices using HTTP and HTTPS protocol, which are used at usual web server, are easily searched at usual search engines like Google as well as search engine for the sole IoT devices. Ill-intentioned attackers get the IP addresses of vulnerable devices from search engine and try to attack the devices. The purpose of this study is to find the problems arisen when HTTP, HTTPS, CoAP, SOAP, and RestFUL protocols used for IoT devices are detected by search engine and are maintained as database, and to seek the solution for the problems. In particular, when the user ID and password of IoT devices set by manufacturing factory are still same or the already known vulnerabilities of IoT devices are not patched, the dangerousness of the IoT devices and its related solution were found in this study.
To study the effectiveness of sliding isolation in a CRLSS (concrete rectangular liquid-storage structure) and develop a reasonable limiting-device method, dynamic responses of non-isolation, sliding isolation with spring limiting-devices and sliding isolation with steel bar limiting-devices are comparatively studied by shaking table test. The seismic response reduction advantage of sliding isolation for concrete liquid-storage structures is discussed, and the effect of the limiting-device type on system dynamic responses is analyzed. The results show that the dynamic responses of sliding isolation CRLSS with steel bar-limiting devices are significantly smaller than that of sliding isolation CRLSS with spring-limiting devices. The structure acceleration and liquid sloshing wave height are greatly influenced by spring-limiting devices. The acceleration of the structure in this case is close to or greater than that of a non-isolated structure. Liquid sloshing shows stronger nonlinear characteristics. On the other hand, sliding isolation with steel bar-limiting devices has a good control effect on the structural dynamic response and the liquid sloshing height simultaneously. Thus, a limiting device is an important factor affecting the seismic response reduction effect of sliding isolation. To take full advantage of sliding isolation in a concrete liquid-storage structure, a reasonable design of the limiting device is particularly important.
