  • This study was conducted to investigate the Net photosynthesis and respiration rates among the varieties of Soybean(Eunha, Pangsa and Paldal that have high yields) at various leaf temperature and light intensity at the stage of $V_5$. The relations between the Net photosynthesis rate and SLW(specific leaf weight) and chlorophyll content were also investigated. 1. Net photosynthesis rates at $25^{\circ}C$ were $21.5mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ in cv. Eunha, $20.2mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ in cv. Pangsa and $18.5mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ in cv. Paldal. 2. Most cultivars of Soybean showed the maximum rates of Net photosynthesis at $25^{\circ}C$, especially in cv. Eunha. Also Net photosynthesis rates differed depending on the leaf shape. Long leaf shape(cv. Eunha) was better than round leaf shape(cv. Paldal) in Net photosynthesis rate. 3. Respiration rates of leaves in Eunha, Pangse and Paldal were $0.56mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $15^{\circ}C$, $0.79mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $20^{\circ}C$ $1.15mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and $1.37mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$. 4. Specific leaf weight were $3.1mg/cm^2$ in Pangsa, $3.5mg/cm^2$ in Eunha and Paldal. No signlficant difference were showed in net photosynthesis rates and specific lear weight. 5. Leaf chlorophyll content were $2.48{\mu}g/gF.W.$ in Eunha, $2.19{\mu}g/gF.W.$ in Pangsa and $1.67{\mu}/g F.W.$ in Paldal. Significant difference were showed in Net photosynthesis rates and Leaf chlorophyll content. 6. The estimated compensation points at which net photosynthesis approached zero were $10{\mu}Em^{-2}s^{-1}$ in Eunha, Pangsa, and Palda at 1$5^{\circ}C$. The compensation point in cv. Eunha at $20^{\circ}C$ was $12P{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ while $13{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ in Pangsa and Palda. The compensation point in cv. Paldal at $25^{\circ}C$ was $18{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ while $16{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ in Eunha and Pangsa. The compensation point in cv. Palda at $30^{\circ}C$ was $23{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ Palda while $13{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ in Eunha and Pangsa.

  • Effects of temperature and salinity were investigated on physiological responses of Mytilus coruscus seedlings. Temperature tolerance and survival of M. coruscus, were examined at temperature 20, 25, 28, 30 and 35$^{\circ}C$ for 9 das. Survival of M. coruscus was 90% at temperature 2$0^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. LT$_{50}$ (lethal temperature) of 9 days was at 27.1$^{\circ}C$. The respiration and filtration rates of M. coruscus were increased with temperature up to $25^{\circ}C$, and decreased with temperature ranged from $25^{\circ}C$ to 3$0^{\circ}C$. LS$_{50}$ (lethal salinity, psu) of 9 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ were 17.01 psu, 19.95 psu and 21.79 psu respectively. Salinity affected survival of M. coruscus with higher temperature. However the respiration and filtration rates were reduced with lower salinity.

  • Photoinhibition and photoprotection of PSII in the leaves of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) grown in Hoagland solution and Tap water were compared. Though changes in the rates of $O_2$ evolution as a function of photon fluence rate (PFR) were comparable, the rates of respiration in the dark was 3 times higher in the Hoagland solution grown leaves than in the Tap-water grown ones. Compared to Hoagland solution grown plane, PSIIs of Tap water grown pepper leaves were more susceptible to photoinhibitory light treatment. In order to inactivate functional PSII to the same extents, Hoagland solution grown plants required almost 2-fold high light $(1600{\mu}molm^{-2}s^-)$ treatment than those of Tap water $(900{\mu}molm^{-2}s^-)$. Interestingly, the remaining fraction of PSII in Hoagland grown pepper was able to survive under prolonged illumination in the presence of lincomycin, which probably means that the growth condition of plant seemed to have an effect on the recovery of PSII from light stress. When PSII was severly photoinactivated at a chilling temperature, recovery was observed only if the residual functional PSII were not inhibited with DCMU, Nigericin and MV during recovery. In conclusion, PSIIs grown in the Hoagland solution was more resistant to excess light than in the Tap water grown one and the recovery of PSII from photodamage was more efficient in Hoagland grown pepper leaves than Tap water grown one, which means that the increased dark respiration may play a important role in the protection of PSII from photoinhibition by helping repair photosynthetic proteins (in particular, the D1 protein of PSII) degraded by photoinhibition.

  • To investigate the effects of the dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) on Scope for growth (SFG) of the manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, we measured $LC_{50}$, filtration, respiration, ammonia excretion, and assimilation rates under $23\pm0.5^{\circ}C$ as a function of DO. The $LC_{50}$ of DO for R. philippinarum, was 2.4 mgDO $L^{-1}$. With decreasing DO, filtration and respiration rates of R. philippinarum decreased, while ammonia excretion rate increased, The assimilation rate was $68.2\%$ at 6.5 mgDO $L^{-1}$, decreased to $29.8\~39.3\%$ at 3.5 mgDO $L^{-1}$. R. philippinarum had positive SFG's at the $DO{\geq}2.5mgDO\;L^{-1}$.

  • The ventral midline approach (VMA) and right flank approach (RFA) are common procedures for the sterilization of bitches. This study compared the different parameters viz. total duration of surgery, recovery time, and length of the incision as well as body temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, and SpO2 in each approach. Twenty (20) bitches were divided randomly for the RFA and VMA. Meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg) was administered subcutaneously half an hour before the induction to provide preemptive analgesia. Diazepam and ketamine were administered intravenously at dose rates of 0.25 mg/kg and 2.5 mg/kg, and 0.17 mg/kg and 3.33 mg/kg, respectively to produce and maintain anesthesia. Each parameter was recorded at the pre-operative, operative and post-operative times. The average duration of surgery and length of incision of RFA (16.1 ± 5.13 min and 2.44 ± 0.83 cm) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than the VMA (21.3 ± 5.48 min and 3.53 ± 0.7 cm). The operated bitches showed hypothermia (p < 0.05) at 1 hour compared to baseline and 24 hours of surgery. Heart and respiration rates increased significantly (p < 0.05) during traction and severing of ovarian ligaments in bitches within the RFA group, but there was no significant difference within VMA approaches. The sedation score was significantly higher (p < 0.05) at 1 hour after surgery in both approaches. Based on the duration of surgery and length of incision RFA approach was quick and minimal skin wound. Further studies on bitches considering molecular investigations of surgical stress are imperative.

  • Dissolved oxygen is considered as one of the important water-quality constituents in streams from one century ago and fishes perish in low dissolved oxygen concentration. Environmental scientists and engineers have introduced the deterministic model to estimate dissolved oxygen concentration of streams and recommended the use of the Delta Method (DM), Approximate Delta Method (ADM), Extreme Value Method (EVM) and Optimization Method (OPT) which can be applied in no spatial variation of dissolved oxygen. The diurnal or annual variation of dissolved oxygen is mainly determined from the parameters such as reaeration rate, 1st production rate and respiration rate which are related to dissolved oxygen. Each method was briefly introduced and applied to two sampling sites of Anseong Stream watershed in this paper. The limitation, advantages and disadvantages of each method were reviewed and analyzed after running the each method. From these analyses, the benefit-cost approach to estimate dissolved oxygen effectively in streams was recommended.

  • This study was to investigate the effects of music-combined respiration and oral motor training on the voice of healthy elderly. 27 women attending a senior center in Seoul participated and were randomly assigned to the experimental (n = 16) and the control group (n = 11). Subjects attended music program(25 minutes per session) once a week for 4 weeks. For both groups, Fundamental Frequency (F0), Maximum Phonation Time (MPT) and Sequential Motion Rates (SMR) were measured using the Praat speech analysis program before and after the training. The results showed statistical significance in scores of intensity, F0, MPT, and SMR in the experimental group while only intensity was statistically significant in the control group. Considering that, the increasing life expectancy and growing number of older adults, their quality of life has been important. So this study suggests that the respiration and oral motor training would be effectively incorporated into training and services for this population.

  • Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common clinical syndrome of diffuse lung inflammation with high mortality rates and limited therapeutic methods. Diosmetin, an active component from Chinese herbs, has long been noticed because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of diosmetin on LPS-induced ALI model and unveil the possible mechanisms. Our results revealed that pretreatment with diosmetin effectively alleviated lung histopathological changes, which were further evaluated by lung injury scores. Diosmetin also decreased lung wet/dry ratios, as well as total protein levels, inflammatory cell infiltration and proinflammatory cytokine (eg. $TNF-{\alpha}$, $IL-1{\beta}$ and IL-6) overproduction in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Additionally, increased MPO, MDA and ROS levels induced by LPS were also markly suppressed by diosmetin. Furthermore, diosmetin significantly increased the expression of Nrf2 along with its target gene HO-1 and blocked the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in the lung tissues, which might be central to the protective effects of diosmetin. Further supporting these results, in vitro experiments also showed that diosmetin activated Nrf2 and HO-1, as well as inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome in both RAW264.7 and A549 cells. The present study highlights the protective effects of diosmetin on LPS-induced ALI via activation of Nrf2 and inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome, bringing up the hope of its application as a therapeutic drug towards LPS-induced ALI.

  • The total photosynthetic rate in leaf mustard lines, which was calculated as the sum of the photosynthetic rate and the respiration rate, was not significantly different from their photosynthetic rate. Plant height, standing of rosetteness, showed a similar change to its specific leaf area (SLA). With increasing the plant height, leaf density increased and leaf color was lighter. It was found that shoot dry weight of leaf mustard was more affected by respiration. Also, it was hypothesized that respiration occurred not only in the leaf but also the stem. It was found that mustard lines whose leaf density was low showed a higher shoot growth. From this result, it was concluded that selection of a leaf mustard line with a larger SLA and lower leaf thickness could be effective in increasing photosynthetic rate.

  • This study was performed for minimization of excessive biofilm effects at the high strength organic wastewater treatment. As a results of biofilm attachment experiment using piggery wastewater, aggravation of water quality due to excessive biofilm showed after 15 days of operating times.4 excessive biofilm phase, the equivalent biofilm thickness and VSS contents per unit aura were observed in the range of 1,100 to $1,200{\mu}m$ and 2.5 to 3.0mg $VSS/cm^{2}$, respectively. In the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor/anoxic fixed biofilm reactor(AFBR/ANFBR) process with endogenous respiration phase, the BOD removal efficiency was obtained more than 90 percentage at the surface loading rate and volumetric loading rate of the AFBR maintained less than 17 g $BOD/m^{2}{\cdot}$day and 1.7kg $BOD/m^{3}{\cdot}$day, respectively. The removal efficiency of TKN and $NH_{3}$-N at the loading rates below 5.60g $NH_{3}-N/m^{2}{\cdot}day$ and 0.56kg $NH_{3}-N/m^{3}{\cdot}$day were above 76 percentage and 82 percentage, respectively. In order to reduced sludge production rate and aggravation of water quality, endogenous respiration phase was accepted at first AFBR reactor. As a results of this operating condition, sludge production was minimized and removal efficiency was maintained stability.
