In this paper, we suggest GP operators based on tree structure considering tree distributions in structure space and structural difficulties. The main idea of the proposed genetic operators is to place generated offspring into the specific region which nodes and depths are balanced and most of solutions exist. To enable that, the proposed operators are designed to utilize region information where parents belong and node/depth rates of selected subtree. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach, experiments of binomial-3 regression, multiplexer and even parity problem are executed. The experiments results show that the proposed operators based on tree structure is superior to the results of standard GP for all three test problems in both success rate and number of evaluations.
Purpose - The industrial structure upgrading can play an important role in promoting the carbon emission efficiency. Thus, this paper attempts to study the impact of industrial structure upgrading on carbon emission efficiency in order to reduce carbon emissions. Research design, data, and methodology - This paper selects panel data of 30 provinces and municipalities (autonomous regions) in China from 2001 to 2016, and divides them into three regions. The Moore index is used to measure the industrial structure upgrading, the non-radial SBM model based on undesired output is used to measure the slack variable to calculate the total factor carbon emission efficiency. Finally the impact of industrial structure upgrading on the carbon emission efficiency are analyzed. Results - It is found that the Moore index and the carbon emission efficiency in the eastern region is the highest in the three regions. Conclusions - The influence of various influencing factors on carbon emission efficiency is different between regions. The Moore index has a positive effect on the carbon emission efficiency in the eastern region, and has a negative influence coefficient on the central region. The effect on the western region is not obvious.
An unsupervised region based image segmentation algorithm implemented with a pyramid structure has been developed. Rather than depending on thraditional local splitting and merging of regions with a similarity test of region statistics, the algorithm identifies the homogenous and boundary regions at each level of pyramid, then the global parameters of esch class are estimated and updated with values of the homogenous regions represented at the level of the pyramid using the mixture distribution estimation. The image is then classified through the pyramid structure. Classification results obtained for both simulated and SPOT imagery are presented.
Community structure of heterotrophic protists and their grazing impact on phytoplankton were studied in Northwest Pacific Ocean during October, 2007. The study area was divided into four regions based on physical properties (temperature and salinity) and chlorophyll-a distribution. They were Region I of North Equatorial Currents, Region II of Kuroshio waters, Region III of shelf mixed water, and Region IV of Tsushima warm current from East China Sea. The distribution of chlorophyll-a concentrations and community structure of heterotrophic protists were significantly affected by physical properties of the water column. The lowest concentration of chlorophyll-a was identified in Region I and II, where pico-sized chlorophyll-a was most dominant (>80% of total chlorophyll-a). Biomass of heterotrophic protists was also low in Region I and II. However, Region III was characterized by low salinity and temperature and high chlorophyll-a concentration, with relatively lower pico-sized chlorophyll-a dominance. The Highest biomass of heterotrophic protists appeared in Region III, along with the relatively less important nanoprotists. In Region I, II and IV, heterotrophic dinoflagellates were dominant among the protists, while ciliates were dominant in Region III. Community structure varied with physical(salinity and temperature) and biological (chlorophyll-a) properties. Biomass of heterotrophic protists correlated well with chlorophyll-a concentration in the study area ($r^2=0.66$, p<0.0001). The potential effect of grazing activity on phytoplankton is relatively high in Region I and II. Our result suggest that biomass and size structure of heterotrophic protists might be significantly influenced by phytoplankton size and concentration.
This paper deals with the problem of estimating the asymptotic stability region(ASR) of uncertain variable structure systems with bounded controllers. Using linear matrix inequalities(LMIs) we estimate the ASR and show the exponential stability of the closed-loop control system in the estimated ASR. We give a simple LMI-based algorithm to get estimates of the ASR. We also give a synthesis algorithm to design a switching surface which will make the estimated ASR big. Finally, we give numerical examples in order to show that our method can give better results than the previous ones for a certain class of uncertain variable structure systems with bounded controllers.
Non-linear document navigation refers to the process of repeatedly reading a document at different levels to provide an overview, including selective reading to search for useful information within a document under time constraints. Currently, this function is not supported well by small-screen tablets. In this study, we propose the concept of structure-aware touch-based scrolling (SATS), which allows structural document navigation using region-dependent touch gestures for non-sequential navigation within tablets or tablet-sized e-book readers. In SATS, the screen is divided into four vertical sections representing the different structural levels of a document, where dragging into the different sections allows navigating from the macro to micro levels. The implementation of a prototype is presented, as well as details of a comparative evaluation using typical non-sequential navigation tasks performed under time constraints. The results showed that SATS obtained better performance, higher user satisfaction, and a lower usability workload compared with a conventional structural overview interface.
A time domain method is presented for soil-structure interaction analysis under seismic excitations. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating infinite elements for the far field soil region. Equivalent earthquake input forces are calculated based on the free field responses along the interface between the near and far field soil regions utilizing the fixed exterior boundary method in the frequency domain. Then, the input forces are transformed into the time domain by using inverse Fourier transform. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far field soil region formulated using the analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements in the frequency domain can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in the time domain. Hence, the response can be analytically computed in the time domain. A recursive procedure is proposed to compute the interaction forces along the interface and the responses of the soil-structure system in the time domain. Earthquake response analyses have been carried out on a multi-layered half-space and a tunnel embedded in a layered half-space with the assumption of the linearity of the near and far field soil region, and results are compared with those obtained by the conventional method in the frequency domain.
A concept of crash energy absorbing (CEA) lattice structure for an inflatable morphing vehicle body (Lee et al. 2008) has been investigated as a method of providing rigidity and energy absorption capability during a vehicular collision (Lee et al. 2007). A modified analytical model for the CEA lattice structure design is described in this paper. The modification of the analytic model was made with a stiffness approach for the elastic region and updated plastic limit analysis with a pure plastic bending deformation concept and amended elongation factors for the plastic region. The proposed CEA structure is composed of a morphing lattice structure with movable thin-walled members for morphing purposes, members that will be locked in designated positions either before or during the crash. What will be described here is how to model the CEA structure analytically based on the energy absorbed by the CEA structure.
As a part of the effort for improving the durability design based on a set of the deem-to-satisfy specifications, it is important and primary to quantitatively identify the environmental impact to a target reinforced concrete structure. In this work, an effort is made to quantitatively calculate the environmental affecting factor with using a fuzzy inference that it indicates the severity of environmental impact to the exposed reinforced concrete structure or member. This system is composed of input region, output region and rule base. For developing the fuzzy inference system surface chloride concentration{chloride), cyclic degree of wet and dry(CWD), relative humidity(RH) and temperature (TEMP) were selected as the input parameter to environmental affecting factor(EAF) of output parameter. The Rules in inference engine are generated from the engineering knowledge and intuition based on some international code of practises as well as various researcher's experimental data. The devised fuzzy inference system was verified comparing the inferred value with the investigation data, and proved to be validated. Thus it is anticipated that this system for quantifying EAF is certain to be considered into the starting point to develop the performance-based durability design considering the service life of structure.
