This study is to suggest the ways to make the education in Library and Information Science more professional and more practical by going through the problems in the curriculum of Library and Information Science in the aspect of 'reference service'. For this purpose, the curriculum changes of 32 domestic universities offering Library and Information Science between 2005 and 2009 was analyzed and compared with the current situation of the U.S. The research has revealed some problems. First of all, it shows that the subjects such as the introduction of or the theory of library and information science still comprise a large portion of the domestic curriculum. Additionally, there seems to be much difference in the number of subjects between the universities. Lastly, there are few subjects which consist of the observation and understanding of the library field, and participation therein. Therefore, to operate the 'reference service' curriculum effectively, it is necessary to offer courses for understanding the users and subjects and for the reference service. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the practical education through a close connection with the library field. Finally, it is urgent not only to expand the subjects for improving the ability of user education and communication but also to make the curriculum of each university specialized.

The MLVA assay is known to have a high ability to identify and discriminate Brucella species, so that it can be used as an epidemiological tool to discriminate Brucella isolates originating from restricted geographic sources. In this study, the genetic profiles of 38 B. abortus isolates from humans were analyzed and compared with genotypes from animal isolates in South Korea. As a result, it was found that they did not show high genetic diversity and were compacted. They were clustered together with animal isolates, showing a significant correlation to regional distributions. With its ability to prove a significant genetic correlation among B. abortus isolates from animals and humans in South Korea, the MLVA assay could be utilized as part of a program to control and eradicate brucellosis, one of the major zoonoses. This study represents the first data of genetic correlation of B. abortus isolates from humans and animals in South Korea.

Reference services that use e-mail to receive reference questions and provide responses were developed as early digital reference services in the library field. However, librarians and users found that e-mail based reference services had some weak points when compared with traditional face-to-face reference services. As a result, libraries have started to create real-time reference services, which are similar to traditional face-to-face reference services through the use of synchronous chat software. Such chat reference services are focus of this paper. This paper approaches chat reference services as one of the services provided by libraries. Based on the understandings of the unique characteristics of services and the concept of "service quality", this paper tries to suggest appropriate marketing strategies of chat reference services.

As smart phones have become widely adopted, they have brought about changes in individual lifestyles, as well as significant changes in the industry. As the mobile technology of smart phones has become associated with all areas of industry, it is not only accelerating innovation in other industries such as shopping, healthcare service, education, and finance, but is also creating new markets and business opportunities. The preparation of thorough security measures for smart phones is increasing in demand. While offering excellent mobility and convenience, smart phones can be exposed to a range of violation threats. In particular, it is necessary to make efforts to develop a security system that can preemptively cope with potential security threats in the banking service area, which requires a high level of reliability. This paper suggests a security reference model that is considered for the smart phone-based joint mobile banking development project being undertaken by the Bank of Korea in 2010. The purpose of this study is to make a security reference model for a reliable smart phone-based mobile financial service, by recognizing the specific security threats directed toward smart phones, and providing countermeasures to these security threats. The proposed mobile banking security reference model is useful in improving system security by systematically analyzing information security threats to the mobile financial service, and by presenting the guideline for the preparation of countermeasures.

To understand the present status and the development of the digital reference service in Korean public libraries, a nationwide site observation was attempted in 2007. The collected data was analyzed, then compared with the previous analysis based on a 2003 data. For the 404 sites offering digital reference, operational characteristics, such as access level, service mode, link description, policy, web form, and FAQ, are analyzed, Performance analysis focused on the presence of question posting, volume of usage, response rate, and types of the questions, for the data collected for 15 days through question and answer transcript recording. Results reveal findings on the present situation as well as changes over 4 years. Related problems are identified. The conclusion includes suggestions for improving digital reference service.

The author discusses the nature and scope of archival reference service through the debate to user studies in the 1980s and the 1990s. Until the 1990s, archivists paid little attention to studying their user population. A new approach to archival user service led to the development of various public services of archives and resulted in active interaction with the public. Based on the discussion, the article examines the implication of archival reference service in Korean society.

The typical Differential Global Navigation Satellite System service of South Korea is the Ground Based Differential GNSS service. South Korea building the Satellite-Based Augmentation System for GNSS to expand the Differential GNSS service. The satellite-based differential GNSS serive is called the SBAS(Satellite Based Augmentation System). The SBAS reference station on ground should be installed to operate the SBAS service alike the ground based augmentation system. That SBAS reference station can be installed with ground based DGNSS reference station. To make the SBAS reference station combined with the ground based DGNSS reference station, DGNSS system should be connected to NovAtel's G-III receiver. In this paper, the DGNSS software reference station's software module architecture was changed and G-III interface module was designed to use the G-III receiver.

The objective of this study is to build up an electronic reference service system specifically in the field of nuclear. Comparing with a library service system, this on has some advantages in that users can obtain information services through the network without spending much time and labor in visiting the library in person. A questionnaire was inquired for 300 researchers to get useful information for the building of the system. This system was proved to be useful by users.

The purpose of this study was to obtain the various basic data for introduction of information and referral service in the Korean public libraries. For the purpose, this study was conducted by carrying out theoretical research on the concept and definition of information and referral service, the type and level of the service and the needs for introduction of the service in public libraries and using questionnaires with 242 public libraries(reference librarians) all over the country, so as to examine the librarians' views on the whole service. The questionnaire mainly included questions about actual status, present level and understanding level of the service, reference librarians' response to needs for introduction of the service, and type and level of the service available when the service has been introduced. In conclusion, this study will help to establish basic foundation, so that the Korean public libraries can realize equalization of the service and promote the information and referral service.

이 글은 광도대학부속도서관의 석교민생씨가 ‘현대의도서관’ 1980년 3월호에 ‘대학도서관에 있어서 Reference Service의 장래’이라고 제목하여 게재한 것을 번역한 것이다. 참고업무란 영어로 Reference Work 또는 Reference Service에 대한 역어(엄격한 의미로서는 차이가 있음)로서 도서관의 전문적인 활동 가운데에서 중요한 핵심을 이루고 있는데, 이것의 기원은 S.R. Ranganathan (Reference Service, 1940)의 도서관의 5대원칙에서 도서관의 참고업무가 출발되었다. 여기서 발출한 참고업무가 현실적으로 많은 제약과 한정된 도서관 자원 속에서 이용자에 대한 효과적인 활동의 방법.평가 등 많은 문제가 존재하고 있다. 그러므로 새로운 시점, 새로운 발상, 새로운 수법에 이한 문제의 해명을 위한 연구 개발이 필요하다고 할 수 있으며, 참고업무에 관한 문제 해명은 금준의 도서관학의 중요한 논제가 되리라는 것을 의심할 여지가 없다. 이러한 비제에 참고사서가 어떻게 대처해 나아가야 할 것인가 하는 문제에 대해 만은 암시를 얻을 수 있는 자료가 되리라 믿어 소개하는 바이다.
