  • The versatility of a human hand is what the researchers eager to mimic. As one of the attempt, the redundant degree of freedom in the human hand is considered. However, in the force domain the redundant joint causes a control issue. To solve this problem, the force control method for a redundant robotic hand which is similar to the human is proposed. First, the redundancy of the human hand is analyzed. Then, to resolve the redundancy in force domain, the artificial minimum energy point is specified and the restoring force is used to control the configuration of the finger other than the force in a null space. Finally, the method is verified experimentally with a commercial robot hand, called Allegro Hand with a force/torque sensor.

  • An athlete motion during weightlifting is analyzed based on robotic manipulability, which shows dexterities by changing the position and orientation of the end-effector of robot manipulators arbitrary or along a specified direction. The athlete body is modeled as a highly redundant robot manipulator. The motion of weightlifting is analyzed based on the selected model with a power manipulability. Power manipulability and its geometric characteristics are derived by combining kinematic manipulability and dynamic manipulability. Also, manipulability-based optimal trajectory of weightlifter for given body structure of weightlifter derived through genetic algorithm.

  • Several figures representing velocity transmission from joint space to task space are analyzed and compared with each other. The figures include velocity ellipsoid derived from Jacobian matrix, scaled velocity ellipsoid derived from normalized joint velocities, polytope derived by numerical scaling, and polytopes derived by linear combinations of Jacobian column vectors. The results show that the optimal directions given by the measures are not the same and the conventional velocity ellipsoid is not good choice as optimization measure as far as the moving direction is concerned. Simulation examples for 3 d.o.f. redundant robot manipulators in 2-dimensional task space are given for comparison study.

  • This paper suggests a measure constraint locus which is the loci of points satisfying the necessary constraint for optimality of a measure in the configuration space. The characterization of four measures for singularity avoidance is worked out by using the measure constraint locus. It gives a global look at the performance of an inverse kinematic algorithm whien each of measures in a kinematically redundant robot is used. The invertible workspace without singularities and the topological properties both on the configuration and operational spaces are analyzed. We discuss also some limitations, based on the topological arguments of measure constraint locus, of the inverse kinematic algorithms, and compare global properties of each of measure. Therfore, a new concept called measure constraint locus gives a methodology for obtaining a conservative joint trajectory without singularities for almost entire workspace.

  • A method is presented for generating the path which significantly reduces residual vibration of the redundant, flexible robot manipulator in the presence of obstacles. The desired path is optimally designed so that the system completes the required move with minimum residual vibration, avoiding obstacles. The dynamic model and optimal path are effectively formulated and computed by using special moving coordinate, called VLCS, to represent the link flexibility. The path to be designed is developed by a combined Fourier series and polynomial function to satisfy both the convergence and boundary condition matching problems. The concept of correlation coefficients is used to select the minimum number of design variables. A planar three-link manipualtor is used to evaluate this method. Results show that residual vibration can be drastically reduced by selecting an appropriate path, in the presence of obstacles.

  • Regarding the measure of dexterity of robot manipulators, two geometric tools, manipulability ellipsoids and manipulability polytopes, are examined and compared with each other. Even though the manipulability ellipsoid approach is the most widely used technique, it is shown that the manipulability ellipsoid transforms the inexact joint velocity constraints into task space and so it may fail to give an exact measure of dexterity and optimal direction of motion in task space. After showing that the polytope approach can handle such problems, we propose a practical polytope method which can be applied to 3-dimensional task space in general. The relation between manipulability ellipsoids and manipulability polytopes are also explored for a redundant case and a non-redundant one.

  • This paper suggests a measure constraint locus for characterization of the performance of a subtask for a redundant robot. The measure constraint locus are the loci of points satisfying the necessary constraint for optimality of measure in the joint configuration space. To uniquely obtain an inverse kinematic solution, one must consider both measure constraint locus and self-motion manifolds which are set of homogeneous solutions. Using measure constraint locus for maniqulability measure, the invertible workspace without singularities and the topological property of the configuration space for linding equilibrium configurations are analyzed. We discuss some limitations based on the topological arguments of measure constraint locus, of the inverse kinematic algorithm for a cyclic task. And the inverse kinematic algorithm using global maxima on self-motion manifolds is proposed and its property is studied.

  • The Kalman filter has been used as a self-localization method for the mobile robot. To satisfy the assumptions inherent in the Kalman filter, we should calibrate the sensors of the robot before use of them. However, it is generally hard to find exact sensor parameters, and the parameters may change during the robot task as the environment varies. Thus we need to perform on-line sensor calibration, by which we can obtain more credible location of the mobile robot. In this paper, we present an on-line sensor calibration scheme which estimates the unknown sensor bias and the current position of the robot. To this end, first we find out the calibration errors of the sensor from redundant sensory data using the parity vector and recursive minimum variance estimation. Then we calculate the current position of the robot by weighted least square estimation without internal encoder data. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through computer simulation.
