It is demonstrated that graphene sheets are produced via thermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) in the presence of imidazoium-based poly (ionic liquid) (PIL). PILs plays an important role in minimizing the reduction time and dispersing graphene sheets in organic solvents. In addition, as-obtained graphene sheets are found to be functionalized with PIL molecules by the strong interaction of PIL and the graphene, as analyzed by various physical methods such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. Such a strong interaction allows the successful production of graphene/PIL composites, in which their electrical properties are controllable by the loading level of graphene in the PIL matrix.
Graphene oxide has been synthesized by microwave-assisted exfoliation of graphite oxide prepared by modified Hummers method. Graphite was oxidized in a solution of $H_2O_2$ and $KMnO_4$ at $65{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, followed by 10 % $H_2O_2$ solution treatment at $80{\sim}90^{\circ}C$. The graphite oxide was exfoliated under microwave irradiation of 1 kW and was reduced to graphene effectively by hydrazine hydrate ($H_4N_2{\cdot}H_2O$) treatment. The exfoliation of graphene oxide was significantly affected by the microwave irradiation on (heating)/off (cooling) period. An on/off period of 10 s/20 s resulted in much more effective exfoliation than that of 5 s/10 s with the same total treatment time of 10 min. This can be explained by the higher exfoliation temperature of 10 s/20 s. Repetition of the graphite oxidation and exfoliation processes also enhanced the exfoliation of graphene oxide. The thickness of the final graphene products was estimated to be several layers. The D band peaks of the Raman spectra of the final graphene products were quite low, suggesting a high crystal quality.
Different phytochemicals obtained from various natural plant sources are used as reduction agents for preparing gold, copper, silver and platinum nanoparticles. In this work a green method of reducing graphene oxide (rGO) by an inexpensive, effective and scalable method using olive leaf aqueous extract as the reducing agent, was used to produce rGO. Both GO and rGO were prepared and investigated by ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectra, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction.
We report on the dispersion state of partially reduced graphene oxide (PRGO) in organic solvents, namely methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, methylene chloride, toluene, and xylene, by controlling the carbon to oxygen (C/O) atomic ratio of the PRGOs. A two-phase solvent exchange method is also proposed to transfer PRGO from water to an aprotic solvent, such as methyl ethyl ketone. We achieve relatively good dispersion in aprotic and non-polar solvents by controlling the C/O atomic ratio of the PRGOs and applying the two-phase solvent exchange method. There is an increase in the glass transition temperatures with the dispersion of PRGOs into amorphous polymers, in particular a $4.4^{\circ}C$ increase for poly(methyl methacrylate) and $3.0^{\circ}C$ increase for polycarbonate. Good dispersion of PRGO in a nonpolar polymer, such as linear low density polyethylene, is also obtained.
Photothermal therapy is a treatment that necrotizes selectively the abnormal cells, in particular cancer cells, which are more vulnerable to heat than normal cells, using the heat generated when irradiating light. In this study, we synthesized a reduced graphene oxide with carboxyl groups (CRGO)-gold nanorod (AuNR) nanocomposite for photothermal treatment. Graphene oxide (GO) was selectively reduced and exfoliated at high temperature to synthesize CRGO, and the length of AuNR was adjusted according to the amount of AgNO3, to synthesize AuNR with a strong absorption peak at 880 nm, as an ideal photothermal agent. It was determined through FT-IR, thermogravimetric and fluorescence analyses that more carboxyl groups were conjugated with CRGO over RGO. In addition, CRGO exhibited excellent stability in aqueous solutions compared to RGO due to the presence of carboxylic acid. The CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites fabricated by electrostatic interaction have an average size of ~317 nm with a narrow size distribution. It was confirmed that under radiation with a near-infrared 880 nm laser which has an excellent tissue transmittance, the photothermal effect of CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites was greater than that of AuNR due to the synergistic effect of the two photothermal agents, CRGO and AuNR. Furthermore, the results of cancer cell toxicity by photothermal effect revealed that CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites showed superb cytotoxic properties. Therefore, the CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites are expected to be applied to the field of anticancer photothermal therapy based on their stable dispersibility and improved photothermal effect.

Solid oxide fuel cell has received more attention recently due to the fuel flexibility via internal reforming. Commonly used Ni/YSZ anode, however, can be easily deactivated by carbon coking in hydrocarbon fuels. The carbon deposition problem can minimize by developing alternative perovskite anode. This study is focused on improving conductivity and catalytic activity of the perovskite anode by introducing rGO (reduced graphene oxide). Sr0.92Y0.08TiO3(SYT) anode with perovskite structure was synthesized with 1wt% of rGO. The presence of rGO during anode fabricating process and cell operation is confirmed through XPS and Raman analysis. The maximum power density of rGO/SYT anode improved to 3 times in H2 and 6 times in CH4 comparing to that of SYT anode due to the high electrical conductivity and good catalytic activity for CH4.

In this study, ITO extended gate reduced graphene oxide field effect transistor (rGO FET) was demonstrated as a transducer for a proton sensing application. In this structure, the sensing area is isolated from the active area of the device. Therefore, it is easy to deposit or modify the sensing area without affecting on the device performance. In this case, the ITO extended gate was used as a gate electrode as well as a proton sensing material. The proton sensing properties based on the rGO FET transducer were analyzed. The rGO FET device showed a high stability in the air ambient with a TTC encapsulation layer for months. The device showed an ambipolar characteristic with the Dirac point shift with varying the pH solutions. The sensing characteristics have offered the potential for the ion sensing application.
In recent years, laser induced graphene process have been intensively studied for eco-friendly electronic device such as flexible electronics or thin film based energy storage devices because of its simple and effective process. In order to increase the performance and efficiency of an electronic device using such a graphene patterned structure, it is essential to study an optimized laser patterning condition as small as possible linewidth while maintaining the graphene-specific 2-dimensional characteristics. In this study, we analyzed to find the optimal line pattern by using a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser based photo-thermal reduction process. we tuned intensity and scanning speed of laser spot for generating effective graphene characteristic and minimum thermal effect. As a result, we demonstrated the reduced graphene pattern of 30㎛ in linewidth by using a focused laser beam of 18㎛ in diameter.
