A conceptual study of an air-cooled heat exchanger is conducted to achieve the long-term passive cooling of an integral reactor. A newly designed air-cooled heat exchanger is introduced in the present study and preliminary thermal sizing is demonstrated. This study mainly focuses on feasibility of an innovative air-cooled heat exchanger to extend the cooling period of the passive residual heat removal system(PRHRS) only in passive manners. A vertical shell-and-tube air-cooled heat exchanger is installed at the top of the emergency cooldown tank(ECT) to collect evaporated steam into condensate, which enables water inventory of the ECT to be kept. Finally, thermal sizing of an air-cooled heat exchanger is presented. The length and the number of tubes required, and also the height of a stack are calculated to remove the designated heat duty. The present study will contribute to an enhancement of the passive safety system of an integral reactor.
The hydraulic part in reactor coolant pump consists of suction nozzle, impeller, diffuser, and discharge nozzle. Among them, impeller is required to be designed to satisfy performance requirements such as head, NPSHR, and head curve slope at design point. Present study is intended to suggest the preliminary design method sizing the impeller size to satisfy the design requirement particularly including head curve slope at design point. On a basis of preliminary design result, hydraulic components have been designed in detail by CFD and then manufactured in a reduced scale. Experiment in parallel with computational analysis has been executed in order to confirm the hydraulic performance. Comparison results show good agreement with design result, confirming the validity of design method suggested in this study.
The reactor pressure vessel head of PWR has penetrations for control rod drive mechanism and instrumentation systems. The Primary coolant water and operating temperature can cause the stress-corrosion cracking of these nickel-based alloy penetrations. It is difficult to detect and size flaws such as SCC in the reactor head penetrations using conventional W methods because of complex geometry, Therefore, the utilities are using the TOFD technique for the detection and sizing of the flaw. This study shows the correlation between the ultrasonic wave direction and the orientation of the flaw and the range of flaw depth which can be detected by the TOFD techniques.

Some catalytic reactors for industrial/generation gas turbines were reviewed and investigated to understand the current status and future prospect for ultra low NOx catalytic gas turbine combustor. Catalytic reactor which was applied to 1${\sim}$10MW class gas turbine has achieved the ultra low emission corresponding to less than 3ppm NOx and 10ppm CO. But the durability and sizing flexibility of catalyst is needed to improve the catalyst performance for commercial gas turbine operation.
The purpose of this study is to present a methodology to estimate the capacity of the pressure relief valve which prevents overpressure of the pressure vessel in a cold state. In this methodology, the transient behavior of the flow rate through the pressure relief valve and the pressure inside the pressure vessel are considered. The result of this study shows the followings; The more the relief valve capacity is considered in excess, the more the initial relief flow rate and the initial pressure inside the pressure vessel are high and low respectively. When the relief valve capacity is determined properly, the pressure inside the pressure vessel maintains almost the same value, so the ASME code requirement will be met.
The vessel of integral reactor contains its major primary components such as the fuel and core, pumps, steam generators, and a pressurizer, so its size is proportional to the required space for the installation of each component. The steam generators take up the largest volume of internal space of reactor vessel and their volumes is substantial for the overall size of reactor vessel. Reduction of installation space for steam generators can lead to much smaller reactor vessel with resultant decrease of overall cost for the components and related facilities. A printed circuit heat exchanger is one of the compact types of heat exchangers available as an alternative to conventional shell and tube heat exchangers. Its name is derived from the procedure used to manufacture the flat metal plates that form the core of the heat exchanger, which is done by chemical milling. These plates are then stacked and diffusion bonded, converting the plates into a solid metal block containing precisely engineered fluid flow passages. The overall heat transfer area and pressure drops are evaluated for the steam generator based on the concept of the printed circuit heat exchanger in this study. As the printed circuit heat exchanger is known to have much larger heat transfer area density per unit volume, we can expect significantly reduced steam generator compared to former shell and tube type of steam generator. For the introduction of new steam generator, two design requirements are considered: flow area ratio between primary and secondary flow paths, and secondary side parallel channel flow oscillation. The results show that the overall volume of the steam generator can be significantly reduced with printed circuit type of steam generator.

A high temperature and a low temperature plasma process technologies were developed and demonstrated for synthesis, hybrid formation, surface treatment and CVD engineering of nano powder. RF thermal plasma is used for synthesis of spherical nano particles in a diameter ranged from 10 nm to 100 nm. A variety of nano particules such as Si, Ni, has been synthesized. The diameter of the nano-particles can be controlled by RF plasma power, pressure, gas flow rate and raw material feed rate. A modified RF thermal plasma also produces nano hybrid materials with graphene. Hemispherical nano-materials such as Ag, Ni, Si, SiO2, Al2O3, size ranged from 30 to 100 nm, has been grown on graphene nanoplatelet surface. The coverage ranged from 0.1 to 0.7 has been achieved uniformly over the graphene surface. Low temperature AC plasma is developed for surface modification of nano-powder. In order to have a three dimensional and lengthy plasma treatment, a spiral type of reactor has been developed. A similar plasma reactor has been modfied for nano plasma CVD process. The reactor can be heated with halogen lamp.
