The response changes of the specific growth rate of Lemna minor duckweed was modeled using the logarithms of frond numbers on tritium activity concentration and gamma radiation dose from cobalt 60. The concept of average specific growth rate depends on the general exponential growth pattern, where toxicity is estimated based on the effect on the growth rate. One of the main questions of the effect of the radiation dose on duckweed is how to correlate the effect of beta radiation with the effect of any other radiation for modeling radiation on Lemna minor. Experimental data were extrapolated by utilizing the OECD guidelines. A linear relationship of absorbed dose and activity concentration was obtained for the average dependency growth rate of Lemna minor as D = (0.1257)·A0.585. The dose rate of gamma irradiation from 60Co increases with tritium activity dependence, on the specific growth rate of the Lemna minor duckweed. An increase in the tritium activity causes a decrease in the specific growth rate of the Lemna minor duckweed. It indicates that as the quantity of the beta radiation dose increase in Lemna minor duckweed, a higher quantity of gamma radiation will be required to cause the same effect in the specific growth rate of Lemna minor duckweed. The relation between the inhibition of the Lemna minor seedling growth and gamma and beta radiation dosage agrees roughly with that between the decrease of survival rate or fertility and dosage.
In this study, it was investigated the antioxidant activity of laminarin degraded by gamma irradiation. Because the activities of antioxidants have been attributed to various mechanisms, different assay methods have been conducted and compared. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity of degraded laminarin were measured and compared with non-degraded. All of these results showed that the antioxidant activity of laminarin degraded by irradiation was increased depending on the absorbed dose. Therefore, gamma irradiation could be an alternative method for the preparation of degraded laminarin with higher antioxidant activity.
The functional disruption of Langerhans cells (LC) by UVB radiation is involved in antigen-specific immunosuppression of contact hypersensitivity. We tested whether UVB radiation inhibits the endocytotic activity of LC, which leads to impaired subsequent migration and maturation. Human monocyte-derived LC that took up lucifer yellow (L Y) or FITC-dextran (Fd) exclusively migrated in response to 6Ckine and matured. Exposing LC to 10-40 mJ/cm$^2$ of UVB radiation reduced their endocytotic activity in fluid phase pinocytosis (measured by uptake of LY) and in receptor-mediated endocytosis (measured by uptake of Fd). Membrane ruffling and CD32 expression were also suppressed by UVB radiation. UVB-irradiated, endocytosing LC had less movement towards 6Ckine, expressed less CD54 and CD86, and had less effective stimulatory activity in allo-MLR than nonirradiated, endocytosing LC. Endocytosis up-regulated TNF-$\alpha$ production by LC, but prior UVB radiation inhibited this enhancement. The finding that impaired endocytosis of LC by UVB radiation inhibits subsequent migration and maturation was also confirmed in murine epidermal cells obtained from unirradiated and 2OmJ/cm$^2$ of UVB-irradiated skin.
In recent day, there is much interest in the biocidal activity of silver since silver is known to be safe and effective as disinifectant and biocidal material against coliforms and viruses. In this study, hydrogels containing silver acetate as antibacterial agent have been prepared using gamma rays irradiation. The hydrogels are composed of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), carrageenan and silver acetate. The concentration of solution was 9 wt%. The ratio of PVP : PEG : carrageenan was 6 : 1 : 2. The concentration of the silver acetate were 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.07% and Gamma irradiation dose was 25 kGy. The Gamma irradiation dose in hydrogels with 0.01% silver acetate were 20 kGy, 35 kGy, 50 kGy, 65 kGy, and 80 kGy. The results showed that 0.01% silver acetate concentration of hydrogels by 25 kGy irradiation dose showed the highest antibacterial activity against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, antibacterial activity of various Gamma irradiation dose in hydrogels treated 0.01% silver acetate showed highest 35 kGy irradiation dose against Staphylococcus aureus.

Neutron dose assessment in criticality accidents using Whole Body Counter (WBC) was proved to be an effective method as rapid neutron dose estimation at the JCO criticality accident in Tokai-mura. The 1.36MeV gamma-ray of $^{24}Na$ in a body can be detected easily by a germanium detector. The Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA) of $^{24}Na$ is approximately 50Bq for 10miniute measurement by the germanium-type whole body counter at JNC Tokai Works. Neutron energy spectra at the typical shielding conditions in criticality accidents were calculated and the conversion factor, whole body activity-to-organ mass weighted neutron absorbed dose, corresponding to each condition were determined. The conversion factor for uncollied fission spectrum is 7.7 $[(Bq^{24}Na/g^{23}Na)/mGy]$.
The aim of this study is to introduce the accuracy of Ir-192 source's apparent activity using the well-type chamber and the Farmer-type ionization chamber in the high dose rate brachytherapy. We measured the apparent activity of Ir-192 that each medical center in the country has and the apparent activity of calibration certificate provided by manufacturer is compared with that by our experimental measurement. The number of sources used for the activity comparison was 5. The accuracy of the measured activity was in the range of -2.8% to -1.0% and -2.1% to 0.2% for the Farmer-type chamber system (Jig) and for the well-type, respectively. The maximum difference was within 1.0% for comparison with two calibration's tool. Our results demonstrate that well-type chamber as wall as Farmer-type chamber is a appropriate system as the routine source calibration procedures in HDR brachytherapy. Whenever a new source is installed to use in clinics, by periods, a source calibration should be carried out.
The induction of heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) by UV radiation provides a protective defence against oxidative stress, and has been well demonstrated in skin irradiated with UVA, but not UVB. In this study, we show that the induction of cutaneous HO-l can be attributed to UVB radiation. The expression of HO-1 mRNA was assessed in vivo by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis, and HO-1 enzyme activity was measured in microsomal preparation from irradiated mice. The mRNA level of HO-1 increases in liver and skin from 1d to 3d after UVB $(3KJ/m^2)$ exposure. The results of gene expression were same pattern of HO-1 enzyme activity in skin, but not in liver. HO-1 mRNA in liver resulted in a progressive increase to 4d after UVB exposure, but HO-1 activity in liver increased to 2d. This finding indicates that UVB radiation is an important inducer of HO-1 and increases in HO activity may protect tissue directly or indirectly from oxidative stress.
The activity measurement of a solution of $^{133}Ba$ which is an electron capture nuclide was carried out by the ${\beta}-{\gamma}$ coincidence method. The counting rates at the ${\beta}-,\;{\gamma}-$, and coincidence-channels were measured using a $4{\pi}$ proportional counter and two NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors. The specific activity of the solution calculated by the efficiency extrapolation was $(1151.01{\pm}2.99)kBqg^{-1}$ at the reference time(00h UT, 03-15-84). According to an international comparison of activity measurements organized by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures, this result showed the difference of 0.94% to the mean value derived from the comparison.

Chemical compounds from four different tissues of the kenaf plant (Hibiscus cannabinus), a valuable medicinal crop originating from Africa, were examined to determine its potential for use as a new drug material. Leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds were harvested to identify phytochemical compounds and measure antioxidant activities. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analyses identified 22 different phytocompounds in hexane extracts of the different parts of the kenaf plant. The most abundant volatile compounds were E-phytol (32.4%), linolenic acid (47.3%), trisiloxane-1,1,1,5,5,5-hexamethyl-3,3-bis[(trimethylsilyl)oxy] (16.4%), and linoleic acid (46.4%) in leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds, respectively. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography identified the major compounds in the different parts of the kenaf plant as kaemperitrin, caffeic acid, myricetin glycoside, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid in leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds, respectively. Water extracts of flowers, leaves, and seeds exhibited the greatest DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD activity. Our analyses suggest that water is the optimal solvent, as it extracted the greatest quantity of functional compounds with the highest levels of antioxidant activity. These results provide valuable information for the development of environmentally friendly natural products for the pharmaceutical industry.
The effects of various intensity of W-B on barley seeding were investigated by PS I and II activities and chlorophyll fluorescence. The Inhibitory effect of UV-B radiation on electron transport activity was Increased as the intensity of UV-B Irradiation was increased. Especially, PS I is more sensitive to UV-B radiation than PS I is. By the addition of uncle electron donor, DPC, to the chloroplasts of the barley seedlings treated with UV-B, the photoreduction of DCPIP was recovered by only 1 IBI on electron transport activity. However, the activity of PS II was Inhibited by 45% by the treatment with UV-B, but recovered it only 11% by the addition of DPC. These suggest that other sites besides the oxidation site of PS II may be affected more by UV-B Irradiation. As the intensify of UV-B was Increased, Fo was Increased while Fv was decreased, and thus Fv/Fm was decreased. This means that photochemical efficiency was reduced. With this parameters, it might be that UV-B radiation affected adversely to around PS II.
